Publisher's Summary

In a world filled with gurus, conflicting philosophies, and a mountain of information, learning how to find a sense of purpose can get confusing. When we look for guidance regarding how to live appropriately, the abundance of answers often has us spinning in circles.

Our endless pursuit of value and meaning stops when we stop listening to these packaged answers and start searching inward instead of outward.

Ikigai is a Japanese philosophy that’s widespread through their culture. Ikigai can be translated as the value of life, and it’s a philosophy centered on living a life of purpose and meaning. It’s not a strict philosophy that enslaves us to a foreign sense of purpose. Instead, it’s about giving value to your own life, no matter how you may choose to live it. Ikigai is a free philosophy that adjusts to everyone on a personal level. Those who learn about this and live by it never feel like they’re living someone else’s ideal life. Instead, their life is as they tailor it to be, only more pleasant and meaningful.

This audiobook teaches what Ikigai is, how to read it and understand it, and how to find your own Ikigai. It’ll show you many different paths to find your own version of value in life. It also has many practical tips to find it, follow it, and live your life abiding by your Ikigai. Learn the concept, follow the steps that’ll lead you to an answer within yourself, and live a happy, valuable, and healthy life.

Your Shield against the World

The Japanese know that they can face the direct circumstances as long as their lives have meaning. This increases their resilience and strength against bad turns of life. This isn't a foreign concept to us; we just don't understand it entirely. We know that surgeons can spend eight hours on their feet during surgery, without eating or resting, because they see the relevance of their work and have committed themselves to save lives. This effort and sacrifice are where most physicians find their Ikigai. Their lives have meaning in the crucial roles they play in their communities as healers. Cops can spend long hours patrolling neighborhoods, facing dangers, and risking their lives, because they find meaning in their roles as protectors of the community. Firefighters can also find meaning in saving people, and therefore, they face fire bravely in order to save as many people as they can from catastrophes. Scientists spend long hours studying and researching because they find meaning in unraveling the many mysteries of the world and the universe.

It's easy to see the power and strength given by Ikigai when we look at these highly-regarded professions, but they're not the only ones who find meaning and live that concept. A janitor may find meaning in making sure the school is clean to protect the children from diseases, and that's a perfectly valid Ikigai. A daughter looking after her father during illness may be facing a tough situation; however, finding Ikigai in her role in the family as a healer and caretaker can make her work much more manageable. Ikigai gives us the strength we need to face unfortunate circumstances with dedication and bravery.

Ikigai is also our shield against tragedy. Ikigai is about the moment and the present journey. However, the fact that it's focused on the present doesn't mean that Ikigai forgets entirely about the future. Once you've found that which gives your life value, you have the present joy, the feeling of Ikigai, but this may also come from the realization that you're moving towards what you truly want. In this realization, facing a tragedy can be more manageable. This is because you know that, once you overcome it, you'll soon be following the path your heart truly desires. The certainty that you're in the right place, your life has value, and you're not wasting it, will always shield you against unfavorable circumstances.

Really amazing

Like any aspiration, it doesn’t happen through introspection alone. The payoff to finding your ikigai is in living it out.
