Story
Just when Sarah Zellaby, adopted Price cousin and telepathic ambush predator, thought that things couldn't get worse, she's had to go and prove herself wrong. After being kidnapped and manipulated by her birth family, she has undergone a transformation called an instar, reaching back to her Apocritic origins to metamorphize. While externally the same, she is internally much more powerful, and much more difficult to control.

For most people, the story of their lives is just that: the accumulation of time, encounters, and actions into a cohesive whole. But for an unfortunate few, that day-to-day existence is affected - perhaps infected is a better word - by memetic incursion: where fairy tale narratives become reality, often with disastrous results.

Publisher's Summary
The ninth book in the fast-paced InCryptid urban fantasy series returns to the mishaps of the Price family, eccentric cryptozoologists who safeguard the world of magical creatures living in secret among humans.
Sarah Zellaby has always been in an interesting position. Adopted into the Price family at a young age, she's never been able to escape the biological reality of her origins: She's a cuckoo, a telepathic ambush predator closer akin to a parasitic wasp than a human being. Friend, cousin, mathematician - it's never been enough to dispel the fear that one day, nature will win out over nurture, and everything will change.
Maybe that time has finally come.
After spending the last several years recuperating in Ohio with her adoptive parents, Sarah is ready to return to the world - and most importantly, to her cousin Artie, with whom she has been head-over-heels in love since childhood. But there are cuckoos everywhere, and when the question of her own survival is weighed against the survival of her family, Sarah's choices all add up to one inescapable conclusion.
This is war. Cuckoo vs. Price, human vs. cryptid...and not all of them are going to walk away.

Really needs 2 narrators
I love this series, but I've never been in love with Emily Bauer as a narrator. She worked okay for Verity, but she's not nearly snarky enough for Annie. And now she's doing Sarah AND Artie?
Complaints against the specific narrator aside, if you have a book told from 2 first-person POVs, it's really nice to have 2 narrators. When those characters are different genders, it becomes imperative.
I spent the majority of the book annoyed about how Artie sounded like a schoolgirl. It was distracting! I was really hoping each Price would get their own narrator, but if we can't have that, can we at least have the guy who does Alex do all the male first-person narration?
The story itself was a decent addition to the series. It's another cliff-hanger ending, and there were some plot holes and info-dumps. But it was fun and funny. It showed more of the Price family dynamic and explored Cuckoo culture.

Cliffhanger! WTF!
Really enjoyed the first 3/4 or so of course the book. be t when it shifted from largely Sarah's POV to Artie's POV it started to go downhill for me. He's the least interesting of the Price kids, to me. Ms. McGuire has him talk about getting all the same training as Verity and Annie growing up but he's largely useless.
When I first discovered this series, I enjoyed the fact that it switched narrators as it switched book POV. Ms. Bauer doesn't seem to be able to produce very many distinct voices, so it seems everyone except James has essentially the se voice. This is especially annoying when the POV starts to shift back and forth between Sarah and Artie. I really hope we get to hear back from Verity again I really enjoyed her character way more than Annie who's also features prominently in this book.

Not my favorite...
Not the best of this series and probably my least favorite of all of them. It seems like the last 2-3 books in the series are slowly going downhill as far as story goes and It feels like not a whole lot happened in the book. It also spent a lot of time in Archies POV for a book that centers on Sarah. Archie is by far my least favorite character in these books, I find him to be one dimensional. He’s a nerd, doesn’t like to leave the basement, and loves Sarah, that’s literally all there is to him. My dislike of him may be coloring how I feel about this book. I wish they would have swapped out Ray Porter to narrate Archie’s portion even if just to help the listener keep track of who is currently narrating. I still recommend you read it if you are a fan of the series, but don’t set your expectations too high.

This author has a BAD HABIT of writing ...
CLIFFHANGERS!!
I'm EXTREMELY glad I got behind on a few books in several of her series so I don't have to WAIT for the sequel!!
Doing a binge reading (and sometimes re-reading) a series.
Almost afraid to start the next one bc there ISN'T another one after it!
so if it's another cliffhanger ending I'm screwed!

My least favorite in the series.
Not sure what about this book made it my least enjoyed. The story just wasn't as gripping as the rest. I also found it occasionally difficult to tell who was talking, particularly since the pov character changes regularly. Emily's voices are just sounding too alike now. I never had that issue in previous books.

maudlin
sarah’s character is fractured but healing. the portrayal of artie and sarah is just too maudlin. too angsty/whingy. not sure if it’s the performance (i usually like this narrator) or the dialogue (not on brand for the author, who i also love).

Sarah & Artie
Long time fans of the series will be glad to find that Sarah has finally recovered from her multi-book illness. This book focuses more on Cuckoos, but the style of the book has a few surprises. First, it does not focus exclusively on Sarah. The focus is sometimes on Sarah, sometimes her cousin Artie (I'd say he gets the majority of the attention). Second, this book is not just a self-contained novel in a series. It ends in a cliffhanger, essentially forming a two-parter in the series. That is quite frustrating, especially as Book 10, "Calculated Risks" is not out yet.

A cuckoo's story
Sarah Zellaby is a Price by adoption. She is a cuckoo, a telepath. After being injured helping Verity Price, she spent 5 years convalescing with her adopted cuckoo mother. Now home with her family, the question is, is Sarah well enough being a cuckoo around people. Arriving home Sarah discovers there are other cuckoos in the area. Cuckoos are extremely territorial and do not play well with others. With her family threaten Sarah must decide to be a cuckoo or be the person she has lived being. The story is told from her and her cousin Artie’s POV. Her and Artie were best friends. It seems that they have romantic feelings for each other but are to shy to do anything.
This ends with a cliff hanger which is annoying.
