Publisher's Summary

"The story races at a dizzying pace.... [Woods] does show a reader a good time." (Washington Post Book World)

Step One: The Perfect Murder

Sandy Kinsolving's once-glittering life hangs by a thread; his future depends on his wife's inheritance and whether or not she's about to throw him out on his ear. What he wouldn't give for a solution to his money and marriage problems.

If this were an Alfred Hitchcock movie, the solution would be obvious. Enter a stranger with wife problems of his own, who offers a violent - and mutually advantageous - proposal.

Then, in the time it takes to whisper a word, Kinsolving's normal life ends. What radiate like a mirage before him are wealth, security, and freedom. But lurking in the shadows are a brutal murder he cannot prevent and a madman who stalks his every waking moment.

"One of the smoothest writers in the pop literature biz and always a pleasure to read." (Detroit News)

Woods is great even without Stone

I have read almost all of Stuart Woods books and now going back to the few I missed. This was a great story even without Stone Barrington . I think Tony Roberts is the best in the business.

No Thanks

This is Garbage!
Most all of Stuart Woods is Good to Great, and I’ve read or listened to most of them. Most of the time I will relisten To most 4-5 times. I could not listen to this one even once!

Book for adolescents?

I was pretty surprised by the simple plot line and lack of drama.
Seems like a book I would have read in Jr High. Totally predictable and unimaginative.

A peak into the lifestryles of the rich with a twist. The paln was for strangers to kill each others wives for personal gain. One character was honest and had only agreed in a moment of weakness, the other was more diabolical. The characters always seemed a step removed from personally involved or dealing with any real life day to day activities, perhaps that's how it is for the very wealthy. Conceptually interesting and with enough twists and turns to see it through to the end, my inability to seriously relate to any of the characters would relegate this one to the second tier rating.

Well done!

Well conceived and written. This earlier book shows the planning and narrative development lacking in the last 35 of the Stone Barrington series.

I couldn’t put it down. I’ve read every book in every series and now reading the standalone thrillers. So far, very good.
