We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Little did Van realize, the old man's tales were more than fiction; they were real. Hidden beneath the old barn, Van’s legacy is waiting: a starship, not of this world. With his combat AI, an android bird named Perry, Van takes his first steps into the wider galaxy. He soon finds that space is far busier and more dangerous than he could have ever conceived.

Love Nathan Lowell!
I love the Solar Clipper series. This one is no exception. my only critique was with the reader. He has a bit too much vocal fry on the ends of his sentences, was a rad monotone, and noone told him the correct pronunciations of some of the places and characters. In summary, he's no Nathan Lowell!

So Sad
I read the book way before I decided to give the audio version a listen. Since I knew Nathan wasn't narrating, I wanted to hear how the "new guy," Jeffery Kafer, was gonna handle things. His performance was one of the worst things I've ever heard, lacking soul and fire, and with characterizations that sound more at home in some Dragnet-era detective story than one of the better space operas written today.
I could have done better and I know nothing about voice acting or narrating.
While I'd highly recommend the book, I cannot and will not recommend the audiobook version to anyone. You see, if you're gonna read to me, I expect to be read a story and one complete with enough nuances to immerse me into the story being told... and Mr. Kafer just failed across the board. I don't compare his reading to what Nathan Lowell did with his podcasts - that would be unfair... but you can tell that Mr. Kafer wasn't invested in bringing the characters to life - he was just reading and in an unimaginative, monotonous way.

Great book. Looking forward to more!
I began listening to Nathan's books when he was reading them himself. I loved the way he narrated and knew exactly how each character would be feeling at the time. I wasn't sure if I'd like the new reader and I didn't at first. Given time I've grown to accept him and I'll say he did a great job with the book. All I request now is...... more books, Mr. Lowell!

I was enthralled by Trader Tales years ago. This comeback did not disappoint. Excellent story. Great narrator. No needless unnecessary cursing or sex, just great tale telling. Ishmael Wong sails on.
I have, years ago, had the very great pleasure of listening to the author, Nathan Lowell, reading the preceding Trader Tale stories himself when they were podcast. He is a wonderful narrator and I thoroughly enjoyed hearing his caramel voice. Jeffery Kafer is a fine narrator and I almost got used to his "black coffee" tones, he certainly has a great range of voices and his female characters sound very good. But for me, Nathan is the voice of Captsin Wong.
Having got that off my chest let's consider the Tale. At the end of the previous book; "Owner's Share", tragedy had visited our erstwhile Captain and left him bereft just when we all thought he was happy. Thank goodness Audible have released this book and put me out of my misery! It's clearly the start of a new phase of life for Ishmael Wong and I, for one, am cheering him on and look forward to seeing what happens next.
If you haven't already, do listen to the preceedung books, this is a stand-alone story but it will be better appreciated heard in sequence. Narhan Lowell has a fine gift for making a future of Solar Clippers and interstellar travel so very plausible, its a pleasure for me to slip forward in time to this reality. There are no aliens, but tbe author describes real humans with familiar quirks and foibles, machinations and sneakiness, all set in a possible future. Our hero is very likeable and innocently wise, and his story is not yet over.

Disappointed it was not read by Nathan Lowell
All of the Nathan Lowell books have been great. However this is badly let down by Jeffrey Kafer. Nathan Lowell was many times better at reading his own work. Even trying to take into account that the characters voices had changed. This was just not as good.
I listened to the original trader's talk titles about 10 years ago . Then again recently. I was very pleased to discover these now works I had not previously noticed. So equally displeased with the lack of continuity in reading . And the lowering of the performance quality.
If Nathan Lowell read these himself I would happily pay more if that is the problem. Great stories either way. Well done and many thanks to Nathan.

Another Fantastic Chapter of the Life of Ishmael Wong
I’ve listened to all six preceding stories of the life of our protagonist Ishmael Wong and I have pretty much loved each one.
With Nathan Lowell’s handling of these books I know I’m getting a quality story. What makes them really stunningly crafted is the fact that rarely does something hugely dramatic happen. In Ashes Born is no different. It’s just the next part of Ishmael Wong’s life and I was hanging on every word! In another writers hands none of these stories would work. Lowell keeps the same pace, tone, and quality of the previous six novels.
This is a solid continuation of this story, and I am looking forward to the next chapter in the life of Ishmael Wong.
I will just say I was worried about having someone other than Nathan Lowell narrate this universe, but Jeffrey Kafer got it absolutely bang on perfect!

Catharsis after Owners Share
This was the therapy Ishmael and I needed after the ending to Owners Share. Building to another great story.
After the author's narration of Traders Tales this performance jars. In particular the female voices didn't feel natural, undermining what in Traders Tales were very strong characters.

Not captain Kirk or Picard in a very good way
I have gotten to know Ishmael Wang since his days on the Solar Clipper. So take my 5 stars with a grain of salt. Are these the best books ever written? No. Do I like the characters and want to see where there story goes. Absolutely yes. Do I like Nathan Lowel's specific writing style. Absolutely yes. This is also not a story about Captain Kirk or Picard. This is an earther turned spacer just trying to live his life and do his job to the best of his ability. I love every minute of it.

The continuing story of Ishmail Wong
If you read any of the previous stories then this is very much the same. Kind of slow moving but none the worse for that. Nicely read.

Contination of a brilliant series.
Nathan Lowell's Solar Clipper books are way up there in my list of must read books. I revisit this series via print or audio book at least once each year. It never gets old. Thank you Nathan for letting us into Ish's world.

super as usual
I love this series. I would agree with most reviews, I miss Nathan Lowells' narration but the new guy does a pretty good job.

Another winner for Nathan Lowell
I find these books almost compelling & while the new narrator doesn't quite have the same skill at differentiating the characters, it's still the perfect story to listen to again & again.

Excellent book by Nat
Loved it! A great extension to Nathan's solar clipper books. A little trouble getting used to a different voice reading the book, but I can't wait for the next book in the series.
