Listen with a Light On!

Cottages in woods are, to me, inherently creepy, and being a fan of suspense and mysteries I was eager to get into In a Cottage in a Wood. Right away, I knew I was going to like this book. From the opening scene in a grungy strange motel room, to a pivotal icy midnight encounter between main character Neve and a mysterious stranger on the deserted Waterloo Bridge, the freezing Thames roaring below- I was hooked.

The plot follows Neve's life after she inherits this stranger's isolated, rundown cabin in the remote forests of Cornwall. The reader is taken on an enigmatic, slow-burn journey that is not a thrill ride, but more of a game of Pick-up sticks, where each stick is a secret Neve must unbury before she can come to terms with why she was chosen to be bequeathed with this Cottage. Neve wants to, needs to leave- the doors don't stay locked, the lights don't stay on, the winter chill reaches fingers inside like death- but despite the increasing feeling that someone or something badly wants her gone, Neve must solve this long buried mystery, with little help along the way, from people she isn't sure she can trust anymore.

Well-written, taut with chilly descriptions of the winter woods and stark imagery that feeds the reader's sense of atmosphere, this story grips from page one and doesn't let up. It's steady pace is perfect for the story, and the creep factor is top-tier but also believable, so this reader says, you have been duly warned! The narration is excellent and leant much believability to the the thoughts, feelings and actions of the characters. Well-done overall and highly recommended- a good read.

Conflicted

If you are a thriller/murder mystery obsessive, like me, this might not be the book for you.
If you enjoy dramatic twist, shocking reveals, feeling genuinely scared, this is definitely not the book for you.
However, if you enjoy in depth character development, feeling confused, and slow moving (but beautifully told) stories, you have found your dream book!
The reason I didn’t give this book 1 star is because, even though it’s not what I would usually ever listen to, it actually kept me listening. The main character is intensely likable, the story itself isn’t bad, and I did really enjoy the performance.
The real downfall was the ending, while not bad, it wasn’t surprising and felt like somewhat of a cop out.

Be careful of reviews..watch out for spoilers!

I never evenyy read the blurb for this book so I had no clue as to any direction it may be heading and I’ve been doing that quite often especially with mystery books. I never was a mystery reader but have been tearing through them on jags. A great mystery novel is terrific fun or would this also be a psychological thriller? Whatever the genre IN A COTTAGE IN A WOOD was well done both the story and the excellent narration. Main character voice was spot on for what I would think she sounded like. That always makes the books THAT much better! I won’t give anything away and be careful of what reviews you read because you really don’t want to know ANYTHING of what’s going on. The smallest bit could spoil things.

Irritating protagonist

I was intrigued by this book. It was on a listing for creepy books for Halloween. Being festive, I've been watching horror films and reading spooky books. This one was neither spooky or creepy really. The story itself was different and pretty good, however I wish the author would have given Neve, the protagonist so redeeming qualities. It's difficult to read a book where you are surely supposed to be rooting for the main character but the whole time you roll your eyes in disgust. Neve is a woman in her early thirties, in a low paying dead end job, just got dumped by her boyfriend for cheating and is living unwelcome in her sisters flat with her disapproving husband and two children. So here's why I disliked Neve she cheats on her bf as soon as he is away with his band mate and acts surprised that he dumps her afterward. She moves in with her sister and can't afford a place of her own in London, she stays out late and makes messes doesn't clean them up doesn't help her sister and is becoming a wedge in their marriage. But the whole time it's like wow is she and you get the impression she feels a sense of entitlement through the whole book. Then miraculously and tragically she is bequeathed a cottage in the country from a woman she saw commit suicide. She then goes to see her 'gift' and just goes on about how horrid it is. Again sense of entitlement...it was so irritating my eyes hurt from rolling up in my head. The narrator adds to Neves being unlikeable. I also got annoyed with the British way of talking in this book it was 'a bit this' 'a bit that' and 'if I'm being honest'. This book had great potential but the author didn't quite bring it there. She spent 3/4 book on Neve and her crappy attitude and ties it up in a neat bow the last hour. I really could not stand Neve and she never 'grew up' in the book just became worse imo. Dis

So much promise

Any additional comments?

The premise was so good but it went nowhere fast. Very disappointed that the story didn't get developed further. For me it fell flat. The first quarter held a lot of promise and then it was just not very interesting. Disappointing.

A true mystery

Firstly, this book caught me from the beginning and didn’t falter. I went from intrigued to invested and was eager to see what was coming next straight through to the end. The main character was very well written. I could relate to her flaws and found, some times, I wanted to shake my head and say ‘what were you thinking’ while always feeling empathy for this young woman. If this were a movie you could say it was very spooky and frightening without the cheap jump scares. Smart, suspenseful and well paced. Loved it!
Secondly, the narration was superb! Very very well done. This is an audiobook I will happily listen to more than once.

On and on... moaning pathetic character!

Such a frustrating book. It went on and on (and on- could have been two hours long) with a constantly annoying pathetic character. The plot was very obvious. I listened to the bitter end hoping, just hoping it would be different.... but it wasn’t. Don’t waste a credit like me- this was like a VERY long take a break story.

Good and believable story, great narration

So far, my favourite narrators are Imogen Church and Lisa Coleman and Helen Keeley. Believable, they don't overstretch their abilities, no over the top whining or baby gurgling. Nice and easy accents. This was perfect for the characters in this book.

The story was simple and believable, no rollercoasters and bangs of bumps, simply a steady roll of entertainment all the way through. Very pleasant 8 hours and a few twists and turns. No over embellishing, and no far fetched ideas.

Looking for more like this.
