For more than three decades John Saul has haunted the New York Times best seller list - and listeners imaginations - with his chilling tales of psychological suspense and supernatural horror. His instinct for striking the deepest chords of fear in our hearts and minds is unerring, and his gift for steering a tale from the light of day into the darkest depths of nightmare is at its harrowing best in House of Reckoning.

The House: Lush and deceptively tranquil, with its pristine beaches and blossoming vegetation, the island basks in splendid isolation off the South Carolina coast. Here, where sudden storms unleash the murderous rage of wind and sea, stands the Devereaux mansion, a once-great plantation house now crumbling amid ancient oaks dripping with Spanish moss. Here, Marguerite Devereaux, fifty and childless, has cast off her dreams to care for her aged, demanding mother.

Story
Another terrifying, classic horror novel from best-selling author John Saul. An insidious madman haunts the peaceful town of Borrego, New Mexico. His goal is singular, as is the focus of his hate and rage. The teenagers of the town seem to have gone too far, and now he will strike back - while they sleep and even during their waking hours - and silence them forever.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Some books are meant to be read; others are meant to be heard – Water for Elephants falls into the second group, and is one of the best examples we have of how a powerful performance enhances a great story. Nonagenarian Jacob Jankowski reflects back on his wild and wondrous days with a circus. It's the Depression Era and Jacob, finding himself parentless and penniless, joins the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth.

Publisher's Summary
For upscale Chicago couple Dan and Merrill Brewster, the old midwestern manse is an ideal retreat, and for their kids, Eric and Marci, it's the perfect place to spend a lazy summer exploring - which is how Eric and his teenage friends discover the curious cache of discarded objects stowed in a hidden room of Pinecrest's carriage house.
The bladeless hacksaws, shadeless lamps, tables with missing legs, headless axe handle, and other unremarkable items add up to a pile of junk. Yet someone took the trouble to inventory each worthless relic in a cryptic ledger. It has all the makings of a great mystery - whispering, coaxing, demanding to be solved.
But the more the boys devote themselves to restoring the forgotten possessions and piecing together the puzzle behind them, the more their fascination deepens into obsession. Soon their days are consumed with tending the strange, secret collection - while their nights become plagued by ever more ghastly dreams - nightmares that soon seep into reality.
And when a horrifying discovery surfaces, so does the chilling truth about the terrifying events that rocked the town seven years before and the mysterious disappearance of Pinecrest's last resident - a twisted legacy with a malevolent life of its own...and a bottomless hunger for new victims.

Stunning
The reader's performance was excellent. John Saul had a large number of characters in this story, and the reader gave a unique voice to each one. The climax of the story had me literally yelling out loud as the reader spoke. Very intense. John Saul is a brilliant writer. Period.

Great freaky story. Narration was good but sometimes Kent sounded more like a bully than a friend to Eric and Tad. But overall, very unique storyline. I wondered until the very end who the real killer was. I just love Sauls work. Can’t wait to listen to more!!

Great story line, again, spoilt by narration being unreal and robotic.
There has to be a better way to have these surely?
Love audio books but American narrators spoil it with their hammy overacting.
Marian Keyes books are funny to listen to and the narration doesn't grind my gears like these ones.
