Publisher's Summary

A young Swedish immigrant finds himself penniless and alone in California. The boy travels East in search of his brother, moving on foot against the great current of emigrants pushing West. Driven back again and again, he meets naturalists, criminals, religious fanatics, swindlers, Indians, and lawmen, and his exploits turn him into a legend. Diaz defies the conventions of historical fiction and genre, offering a probing look at the stereotypes that populate our past and a portrait of radical foreignness.

Hard to characterize

Historical fiction? But so much more. I was expecting a lot and I got it. The prose at times is elevated to a very poetic form. This guy knows how to paint a picture. Never boring! Action, yes. Settings, character development, symbolism. Takes place in the Old West, but not what I’d call a western. Better.

an odd storey slow but captivating

I was intrigued from the beginning. It's a slow and tedious journey, captivating.
I enjoyed the reader.

doesn't have a proper ending

the main character has a good many interesting experiences along his journey, but in the end they make little sense, and there is no proper ending. a real disappointment.

Brilliant

It doesn’t get any better than this. Listen and enter a world that is harsh but beautiful.

Long walk to nowhere

I liked the author’s skill, but the endless tragedies and repeated I’ve story lines grew so tedious. Didn’t need that long walk to nowhere to get the feel for the hero’s tedious life. Had to put this book down and walk away many times to get through it. Meh.

OMGosh...Life Goes On

Man oh man talking persistency & hard work...How does one keep a dream alive? Starting this I was pulled in by my Grandniece(15yrs)telling me it was assigned in school, plus I was encouraged being product of Swedish immigrants. Amazing tale of keeping Your Dream Alive - is Truly Up To YOU!! ONLY YOU can make your life into what you're hoping for. And Even If It Never Becomes what you were planning....Never giving up hope to get back home.

monotonous

Started with such promise and ended with a thud. I was hoping for more on a recommendation from next book, but this just dragged on and on without any real purpose.

Moving and beautifully senate story

Highly recommend this riveting book. Just wish the reader hadn’t felt the need to play to the balcony with his acting. The writer’s wonderfully cinematic and sensory rich prose should have been read in a more natural way. The story wins out…couldn’t stop listening.

Great story, great narration

Wonderful story - both painful and beautiful. Narrator is one of the best I've heard.

Great Anti Western

Really enjoyed it. Diaz is very descriptive. I agreed with other reviews that sometimes the descriptions take over the storyline, but it kept my attention.
