Story
In a world devastated by a series of cataclysms over millennia, where the followers of different gods vie for ascendancy, mankind carves out a precarious existence among the remnants of a desolated past. Cities and civilizations are built atop mysterious and ofttimes menacing ruins, and the unforgiving wilderness beyond is filled with inhuman creatures and races from before the dawn of history. Sorcery is seen by some as a gift of the gods and by others as their curse. And the demon-ravaged past has all but been forgotten.

Good narrator, lackluster story.
I didn't finish the book, but I made it about half way through (about 8 hours). While the prologue was intriguing, everything else was boring and tropey. The main character is an orphan, in a righteous and religious order that I couldn't stand. The trial outcomes were predictable, boring, and made the pacing a slog. While I am not a prude, I found most of the sex scenes unnecessary. They aren't heavily graphic or anything but Carred always seems to be in someones bed. I rather have had more answers eluded to or world building rather than that. The narrator is good, but I didnt like the voice he chose for the dwarf. It just seemed unfitting and made me think she was some kind of inhuman creature. Overall pretty disappointed and I refunded the book. Granted I did not finish it, so perhaps it gets better but the books pacing made listening it more of a chore than an enjoyable experience so I stopped. However, many people seem to enjoy it so perhaps it just not a book for me.

More appropriate as Book 0
Mitchell Hogan is an excellent writer and I thoroughly enjoyed his "Sorcery Ascendant" series, however, this book was difficult to latch onto with the same interest and intensity. There was too much untold secret backstory and even after 15 hours of telling, only a portion was revealed. It was mostly a coming-of-age book but so much beating-around-the-bush regarding the MC that in the end I found myself no longer caring about what was to be revealed from within the bush. The MC spent most of the time lamenting his circumstances and infidelity to his order such that it made him seem somewhat of a pathetic protagonist.
Michael Kramer's narration performance was, as to be expected, stellar but even that was not enough to desire to continue with the series.

Great read
The main character is on every page, so nice not having a million b-listers to remember. It’s not endless battles there’s an actual story. The characters aren’t constantly fleeing from certain death only to be repeated ten pages later. It has a diverse and logical magic system with many spell ideas, not just napalm death again and again. The characters aren’t paranoid superhero's or endlessly changing sides, and Micheal Kramer is as always superb.

Ignoring a few flaws, this is a great start.
So I'm in two minds about this one... one one hand, it's a cool story, and keeps you going without being plodding or uninteresting. The problem is, it feels like it was written for, and maybe by a teenage boy. Women are sexualised and there are so many... let's call them intimate scenes, that seem to be used to show a connection between two characters, that could have been done in so many different ways. Good story, just too much innuendo, lusting, and double entendre.

Really great new series!
This was a fantastic new series by Mitchell Hogan. It's set in his previously established world of Wiraya, but it's not necessary to have read any of those, as they aren't referenced in this one.
This book follows a young man named And Kat, who is training to be part of an order of religious Knights.
I'm not sure how much more to say without spoilers, so I will just say, that the story really sucked me in. It also made me think, because some of the cultural genocide the Neyandrians face is happening in the real world in certain parts of Asia.
Anyway, the characters were well written and vivid. Several times I found myself thinking about the characters and their problems as if they were real. To me, that's the sign of an excellent book.
The narration was well done and fit the story well.
All in all, I really loved this book, and can't wait for the next one!
