not very informative

This book didn't have much to offer. I expected to learn more about dog psychology but little in it was really all that new. the book read more like a memorial to the author's dog than anything of major importance. also the narrator sounded like siri, which made the experience worse.

Boring and not particularly informative

Would you try another book from Alexandra Horowitz and/or Karen White?

No. The narration is terrible. It is boring largely because of its monotonous drone. The "story" is neither a factual or scientific recitation nor a story in any real sense. It is almost stream of consciousness, dull consciousness at that.

What do you think your next listen will be?

I hope something better.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

See my comments above.

Any additional comments?

I had to stop listening. Also, although purporting to be a scientist, the author's recitation of fact about dogs goes against my 45 years of observation and interaction with dogs. She would need to be much more specific and present her evidence in far more detail to convince me that her observations should be given more credence than my own. Instead, almost everything she presents is cursory and conclusory.

Pleasant but uninformative

Nothing surprising or insightful but a pleasant read. I was expecting more but this is pretty standard.

Thought provoking, beautiful language

Love the scientific angle author uses to support the points she makes but also the evocative and loving description of her own dog. Really enjoyed this audiobook. Definitely changes the way one will look at a dog going forward!

Never used five words when two hundred would do

I'm sure there's good information buried here. I might actually like the print version where I could skip the author's rambling, personal side notes and disclaimers. I felt like I was listening to a warning label on medication. To be honest, I never made it past chapter two. By then I had learned that the author had lost a dog because it had gotten out in traffic. Yep that was it and I don't mean I had learned nothing new. That one line sums up the first two chapters. With a good editor, it might become a very good ninty minute book, I'll never know.

If you know a dog then....

You need to read/listen to this book. The author is clearly a dog lover and her insights about how dogs function is wonderful. I took some lessons from this book and used them with my dogs. I have given a couple of copies of this book to other dog owners as a nice way to give them additional understanding of their constant and loyal companion. It is wonderful that the author reads for us. She is not broadway trained but her heart comes through.

A fascinating and balanced portrayal of the dog

Very enjoyable. Great science based listen for anyone even remotely interested in dogs. The science is portrayed in a highly accessible way, the writing is interesting, and all is enhanced by the narrator's performance. I particularly enjoyed the fact that the author doesn't just present and focus on the dry scientific facts, but also allows for the emotional consideration of the human-dog bond. I think it's a very good, balanced book.

A must for dog owners

What did you like most about Inside of a Dog?

This is an extremely interesting audio book. Really well narrated. It was surprisingly engaging and informative and promised to get me looking at my dogs differently. It succeeded in this. The book is intentionally quite amusing in places.

Any additional comments?

Any dog owner would benefit from this. It will help you get some understanding of why your dog behaves the way it does and give you some idea about how to influence it. It is not a training guide though

great book, bad narrator.

I have tead the book before. So I decided to get a copy on tape too. I don't think I'll be able to listen to much of it, the narrator is terrible. Sounds like an electronic voice on the old school text to speech functions on Mac computers. Not enjoyable to listen too at all.

Too much comparisons between dogs and wolves

Some good parts but the fact that dogs are not wolves made a lot of this book unbearable to listen to and made it difficult to distinguish whether or not the rest of the information in the book was based on fallacies too.

Check the narrator before you purchase

The narrator is very robotic and sounds like an automated voice. I couldn't get past it although the topic was interesting.

Great book but....

“They”,”their” and “them” exist as gender neutral terms. Using “he” for all dogs and owners is not the gender neutral alternative to “it”. Other then that, the book is great!

Mandatory Reading

What a wonderful insight into what it’s like
to be a dog! This book should be mandatory reading for all people regardless of whether they are guardians of a dog or not and especially for all “dog trainers”. I am sure my dog and I will listen to this audiobook many times over. Great thanks to Alexandra Horowitz, Pumpernickel and Finnegan.
