On any Sunday morning in the Florida Redlands, Dee Casteel might have served you pancakes at the IHOP. She was a hard-working, cheerful waitress, one of the nicest people you'd ever want to know. She was also a three-bottle-a-day alcoholic, hopelessly in love with the IHOP's manager, Allen Bryant. Bryant wanted his live-in lover, IHOP owner Art Venecia, dead. And Dee Casteel helped him to arrange it.

Story
In January 1994, Eileen Tessier told Jack McCullough's half sister Janet Tessier that he, her son, kidnapped seven-year-old Maria Ridulph from their neighborhood in Sycamore, Illinois, and killed her in December 1957. It was a case that tore the child’s family apart as well as dividing and terrifying the town as the days, then the months, and finally the years passed with no arrest. In 2008 the Illinois state police reopened the case against Jack after receiving an email from Janet Tessier about their mother's deathbed confession.

Publisher's Summary
An eye for an eye.
They are battered women, grieving parents, and burglarized homeowners who responded to criminal violence by taking the law into their own hands. Their cases have struck a deep chord in American society. Are they victims of a failing judicial system or criminals themselves? True crime writer Gary Provost examines the stories of ordinary citizens who have taken on the roles of judge, jury and - sometimes - executioner. Are their acts a higher form of justice...or merely revenge? You decide:
- Bernhard Goetz, who shot four teenagers when they approached him on a subway train and demanded money
- The young man who gunned down his own friend for killing his teenaged sister in a drunk-driving accident
- The mother who risked her life to track down and apprehend her daughter's rapist
- "Grambo", the Dallas grandmother who held a burglar at gunpoint for 45 minutes while waiting for the police
- The battered wife who hired a hit man to murder her husband after 17 years of abuse

you make my family the bad family our story of the night from us different completely I'll never forget that night and you don't have facts about both sides of the night you are just telling their side my father was not the monster you made him out to be the way you make them look like my opinion is that I am convinced that this is a slander and insult to me and my family the rest of the story of the things that they done to us wasn't mentioned in the entire story and the way you are telling the story is about the thoughts of only the Johnson's and you are not worthy of your one side of the story of slandering my family's integrity and honor your lying to sell your book and it will stop by anything I have to do to get this removed and I will defend my father's death to any way necessary
