Story
The Darshik war machine is flagging, but the war is far from over. Even as an exhausted Federation military tenses up for a counterattack after repelling the last Darshik invasion, reports are coming in of a new, more powerful class of ship that's striking deep into Terran space. Captain Jackson Wolfe has been given the fleet's newest, most advanced destroyer and tasked with eliminating this new threat before it can claim any more human lives. What he finds, however, is immeasurably more dangerous than just some new class of starship....

Aliens exist...and, as it turns out, most of them aren’t that friendly. Jacob Brown wasn’t even born yet the first time they attacked Earth. He was only 14 the second time it happened. When Earth finally came together and fielded its first spaceborne military, Jacob didn’t hesitate to volunteer. Serving aboard a mighty starship, he’d be able to defend his planet - and his family - when, inevitably, they came again.

Story
When Van Tudor returns to his childhood home, he inherits more than the family farm. His grandfather used to tell him fantastic stories of spacemen and monsters, princesses and galactic knights. Little did Van realize, the old man's tales were more than fiction; they were real. Hidden beneath the old barn, Van’s legacy is waiting: a starship, not of this world. With his combat AI, an android bird named Perry, Van takes his first steps into the wider galaxy. He soon finds that space is far busier and more dangerous than he could have ever conceived.

Story
In the 25th century, humans have conquered space. The advent of faster-than-light travel has opened up hundreds of habitable planets for colonization, and humans have exploited the virtually limitless space and resources for hundreds of years with impunity. So complacent have they become with the overabundance that armed conflict is a thing of the past, and their machines of war are obsolete and decrepit. What would happen if they were suddenly threatened by a terrifying new enemy?

Story
In the 20th century Earth sent probes, transmissions, and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed. The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy. As most of the local worlds were too civilized to have a proper army, the only valuable service Earth could provide came in the form of soldiers....

Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the 10 consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor.

Publisher's Summary
The Black Fleet Saga continues....
A human planet has been invaded. The enigmatic Darshik have landed troops on a frontier world and have begun subduing major cities even as their blockade repels all attempts by the fledgling United Terran Federation to mount a counteroffensive.
The Federation's military command is desperate, and with their fleet still in tatters, they make a last-ditch effort to free the planet: They pull Captain Jackson Wolfe out of retirement and put him in command of a ship they hope can get past the defending armada and provide support to the beleaguered Marines and civilians fighting on the surface of the contested world.
There is no reasoning with this enemy. If the Terran Federation wants their planet back, they will have to pay the price.
Iron & Blood is the second book of the Expansion Wars Trilogy and the fifth book of the Black Fleet Saga.

Almost finished in one sitting
Darnit! Two days and I've already finished the book! I was hoping to take my time and savor the story. But nope! I completely lost myself in the book and only realized that it was early morning when my eyes started hurting. I stopped the book and put it away, intending to save it for when I was on the road. But again, nope. I woke up thinking about the story and ended up finishing the book in that day.
I won't get into details, but I will say that Senior Captain Wolfe is not brought back into the fleet the way I expected. And it made for a great and gripping story. Also, the new characters and new scenarios kept me riveted.
This book is REALLY not a rehash of the previous books. In this one, we see the war from a few different angles from before. And it's outstanding.
I again have to give my complements to Mark Boyett. His pace, emotion, and voicing are excellent. A great performance for a great story.
Highly recommended!

Action and Characters with voices to match
One of Dalzelle's best. Action, twists, intrigue and a wonderful family of characters. This is my second listening: I'm enjoying it again after 3 years away from the series. I like rich characters that stand up to time by being complex, both good and bad sides to their personalities. You can even understand how the enemy came to be what they are.
Boyett creates such great voices the build put the characters. I think this is his best set, though Undying Mercenaries would be close.

Very full and diverse elements to the story
Enjoy this series so much. The characters are developed well over the six books; the tech slowly develops and pleasingly there’s some ground war and a very different mission for the lead characters. It’s great seeing Wright develop, good that she’s imperfect too.
This series stands up to multiple listens.
The narration is engaging and accents are just diverse enough to describe characters without being caricatures. Outstanding.
