Story
Blackmoor Cove has been pulled back from the edge of oblivion, but that doesn’t mean the fight is over. While the all-consuming Corruption pushes harder against their progress, Jack embraces his new responsibility to rebuild the broken people around him. However, none of it will last unless he enters the Tower every morning and defeats the vicious monsters within for their valuable loot drops. With the Arcane Mage, Thymus, now in the party, they will climb higher than ever before, but will the 12 years of terrible isolation make the time-lost Hero unreliable?

Story
Without so much as a warning, humanity in its entirety was suddenly moved to another dimension. Every person, without exception. But this new world, with all its opportunities and gifts of wondrous abilities, was a stadium. A deadly arena of an unimaginable scale. And humanity was to be its latest gladiators. Every man, woman, and child was given a weapon and ordered to fight. Stuck in this dimension without a way out, only two options existed for the would-be hunters: Fight with monsters to complete the many trials ahead, or perish.

He really didn't deserve being reborn into a dog-eat-dog world as a dragon. To be fair, it’s nice to be at the top of the food chain. Now Carl just needs to learn how magic works, which monsters are safe to eat, and why his hoard is so important to him. Publisher's Summary
Jack is violently pulled into a game-like universe and dumped into a seaside town on the brink of destruction. When the people of Blackmoor Cove begin to ask about his combat role, Jack discovers his odd Hero Class and finds that parts of his game interface are riddled with exposed coding errors.
He quickly learns that the only way the town can grow and push back the unknown substance threatening to consume it is if brave Heroes venture into an infinitely high, ever-changing tower, kill bizarre monsters for their valuable equipment drops, and then deposit those items into a special chest.
As Jack struggles to level up and help save the people he has grown to care for, he learns the true nature of this simulated world and his destiny.... But can he overcome his reckless nature and become the leader this strange world needs?
This “crunchy” GameLIT/LitRPG story contains: item-based game mechanics, town building, countless unique monsters, boss fights, and cheaty special abilities.

Tower-climbing, town-building dream game
I love Azure Dreams, An old, obscure JPRG from PS1 that involved turning a dying town into a metropolis while slowly expanding the power you can take with you into a randomized tower. This book reminds me immensely of that, in all the best ways, and makes me want to listen to roughly 6 more books in the series right now. As an audio-only reader for years, I am supremely tempted to go grab the Kindle version of the next book...but SBT did a truly excellent job performing this book. One of my favorite performances I've heard from the cast, alongside a well-orchestrated use of music and sound effects that added to the book in quiet and smart ways, without distracting from the narration.
The only con I can think of is the gear lists get a bit long towards the end...it was hard to follow all the values, and I barely cared- the story is excellent even with minimal attention paid to the crunch (genre term for the hard numbers in LitRPG). I imagine if I was reading it, the numbers and values would be around the sweet spot for frequency and info- and tables are easily glanced over and absorbed from the page-, but it did remind me of my wish that LitRPGs be edited separately for their audiobook performances. Overall, a minor quibble on a fun, clever book that left me wanting the next book ASAP!

Everything gamelit should be....
...except the end. Really awesome premise. Great characters. Interesting and satisfying progression. Then the story just ended, absolutely zero resolution. It’s not even really a cliff hanger, the author just decided he was done I guess. I’ll get the next one, if there is one, but I really hope there’s a little more thought given to the overall narrative of each individual book. They should stand on their own.

Why would you put chewing sounds in?
Who wants to hear the sound of people eating suddenly blare into their ears while listening to an audio book? Automatic 1 star performance for adding disgusting sound effects. What is wrong with you? I can't even focus on what the book is about after that horrific experience. Edit: MC is a contrived idiot. Poor crutch writing.

Refreshing take on GameLit!
Great story and Narration!
While mapping a mine for silver deposits, Jack stumbles across some lost (alien?) technology and manages to get transported into a Gameworld on the verge of collapse. Now he has the opportunity to raid a dudgeon, save a town, and win the heart of a strangely enchanting maiden. If only he could get his glitches under control...

Good story, but sophomoric romance.
The theme and plot were great ideas. The results were lacking. The one romantic relationship feels like it was written by a teenager.
The voice acting was amazing. The performances were very well done.

More like very Pertinent Jack
Wow, Prax Venter took a break from doing harem and stepped into some hardcore LITRPG that features both town building and tower climbing as the main components of the tale. I am very pleasantly surprised, and maybe a little shocked that he opted to go for the more family friendly version, but while sex sells Disney owns everything. So I get it.
Here the MC is a bit of nonconformist who hates to follow the rules. He has an aversion towards authority figures and doesn’t like being told what to do. As a result, oh and I so understand this guy to his core, he ends up doing something stupid and getting himself stuck in a spaceship that has been trapped underground for countless thousands of years. He then has to fight off an organism that mimics other creatures and can only be killed by fire. Sorry, that’s the Thing. Damn, I love that movie. Anyway, the MC does stumble into a space vessel and finds himself inserted into a VR world. He soon discovers that the world he is in is under attack by a corruption from the real world, and that he is the only hope that the real world and the virtual world have of defeating this dimensional eating stuff.
The story is well paced and has some intriguing characters, it also does one hell of a job world building and setting up future books. One thing I liked is how the MC doesn’t flip from being a self centered jerk to doing the right thing quickly, and it is something that he later acknowledges in the book, that if he’d had things his way he would have died right off from his arrogance and lack of listening skills. Venter treats this every well, and it is some solid character growth; which was nice to see develop.
I also like the companion that the MC gets, not the girl, but the A.I. He was funny and a good source of info that gets parsed out as he grew in power and could access more systems. It sure beat one large info dump. The girl of his dreams also was played out well, as in she didn’t fall for him right off the bat, and had trust issues through most of the book. Issues that were completely understandable. The townspeople all have vibrant personalities and stood out. My only complaint was that I couldn’t tell if the village only had a handful of people left or if the book only spotlighted a handful of them for expediency’s sake. It could go either way, and if the former is true then where will the people come from to build up the town as it grows? I guess We’ll see.
The narration is amazing, complete with some SFX, but not enough to be overwhelming. I love the smooth vocal tones of Justin Thomas James’ narration, and thought that Hay’s voicing of Jack perfect. Hays just seems to do incredulous so well. Plus, he’s fulla snark in real life. The surprise is that Andrea Parsenau comes on board to help do the female voices and naturally, this is a three way I am most happy to have experienced, it’s like three of my favorite narrators came together to make an audiobook just for me. And it is just for me, but I’m not stingy, so Imma share it with y’all. So, I don’t know if you get the hints I’m droppin, but this is some hella good narration. I rather like the SBT team up.
Final Score, 8.3 stars. Good story, good characters, and good narration combine to bring us an incredible tale of one man’s struggle to save everything he knows.

Excellent!
An excellent book with an interesting premise, great characters and an engaging plot! The thing that characters and non-characters is is the ability to truly interact with them. The NPC’s here have real feelings and hopes whether or not they are flesh and blood, this is what makes us care. I am truly invested and can’t wait to see more of the story.
The narration is excellent also the actors are fantastic and always draw me deeper into the story!

Completely Relevant
When it was past 2am and I was still listening to this audible book because I simply MUST hear what's going to happen next and how it's going to end, I know I've managed to find a winner. It's pretty rare to find a litrpg that hits all the right cylinders for me (good hero, great story, interesting characters, good style and pacing, decent humor, good world building, good action, etc). I was totally engaged with this book the whole way through. The character skills are not too complicated and deep and hence don't require minutes by the author to tell to the listener the stats and skills. I like a good balance and this is just right in that regard. Soundbooth also does an excellent job with the voices and effects (never overdoing the effects).
My only gripes are that the book ends without a major milestone discussed throughout the book being hit, and there are some elements of the combat system that are non consistent (such as why the skills learned in the arena don't translate to actual skills in his list of skills). But those are very minor things compared with the story as a whole so can't really take away a star for that.
Overall this is near perfect litrpg in my view, and if you are a fan of litrpgs you really should grab this one. I'm definitely looking forward to the next book in the series!

Great performance, added to the story.
Never have I enjoyed a narration team as much as I enjoy soundbooth theater. I am probably one of many who has listened to everything you guys put out, but I try to stay above the water with content.
This was a great book. The characters showed development, in an easy to understand way.

Badly written and oh so boring
The reviews for this looked promising and a group performance from sound booth theatre had me optimistic. Unfortunately this book has been beyond disappointing. The characters are two dimensional, the plot is flimsy and cliched, the writing style is GCSE standard...
I might be being too harsh but I would strongly suggest no one waste their money or credits on this. There are some great, or even enjoyably mediocre works available in this genre, don’t waste your time on this one.
The later books may be better but I have zero intention of ever finding out.

irrelevant Jack.
I really enjoyed this book, the concept is really good, the main character Jack is very likeable as are the rest of the characters.
The world building is imaginative and well delivered.
The narration is as always by Jeff Hays, featuring Andrea Parsneau and Justin t Scott.
over all a great book well worth checking out
10/10

Weird and Wonderful LitRPG
New to the series but it looked interesting so gave it a try and despite being a bit slow kinda like Jack ,it does pick up quite well and i think the 2nd audio will be better as the "game" picks up and things come together.
However this is the first audio have picked up with Andrea to the SBT line up so it shows as i really enjoyed her talents and kept me going when i started to become annoyed with Jack.
Or perhaps i just seen where a lot of the story was going.

My god this is slow!
So this is one of the slowest starts I have had from the fell into an alt world types! Our protaganist is boring so far im only just past the 1hour 30min mark but dam it feels like more than twice that. The back story for the MC which amounts to almost nothing takes ages. The transition to the new world is also a lot lot longer than in most works of this kind which could be interesting it add a few open questions and plot threads that may be paid off later but its so slow and drags the pacing badly. Then we arrive at our game world of adventure only to get all the new world new rules stats and inventory screens standard fair of the genre after the slow trudge of the opening this is just another set of plodding discriptions I get a setting needs to be establised but .
So we have had a mining accident a possible alien encounter a paracitic infection and meeting with a sexy Elf hero and the whole dropped into a new world with magic and some how the author has conspired to make it boring as hell! I will update my rating if I can bring myself to get back to this and if my OP changes.

Dungeon Crawling Litrpg
Good story about a guy trying to keep demons at bay by traversing a tower over and over to increase gear quality and give the rest to fuel the town to repel the demons. The tower is 100 levels tall but each level gets harder and each level is different, vastly different. Hats off to the author for coming up with a wide variety different floors.
As always Soundbooth are as good as ever.

Awesome sound design.
Vague hints of imminent doom for not grinding a game can only get you so far, while the levels were sort of unique thier implementation was very one note, with the romance being quite shallow. Jack is basically the rebound guy along with being the only other romantic interest of the only other hero in the village.
the only thing they gave as hype for going up the tower is filling up equipment slots and getting more points. It goes into great length to explain what will happen in the future ( fight anti hero, fight corruption as level increases, trade with other towns etc) with the factors that provide any difficulty being solved by the ship.
Instead of a race against time, its a race against the end if his lifespan, which dramatically lowers the tension.
overall its a okay story with voicing especially the songs and the end part with the harbor master.

Irrelevant Jack
Prax Venter is one of the most talented and skilled author and I enjoyed this book greatly
And with the voice acting talents and skills of Andrea Parsneau,Jeff Hays and Justin Thomas James who makes the characters and world come alive with the narration.

Genuinely Enjoyable
This... is a great story. It was a smooth, easy listen - wasn't too sure about having three narrators at first, but it worked - and the story was fun and easy to follow.
Setup was great, adventuring was great, dungeons were great and characters were three dimensional and interesting. There's a lot of great gamelit / litrpg books out there... and also unfortunately a lot of bad ones. This is one of the good ones folks - and well worth a listen.

Action heavy
I thought that this was a fantastic edition to the LitRPG genre. The author does a good job giving his own game system and world building. What really sold this story was the audiobook as there were three actors and some special sound effects tossed in. If you have the extra money I recommenced that you go for the audible version.
Plot: Jack is a miner who stumbles on a space ship. He is zapped into a computer game. The name of the game is to feed items to the local town, giving it the energy to fight off a universe eating monster force.
Characters.
Jack starts off as careless person who is tossed into a game world. He has a reckless attitude at the start of the book but over time learns from his mistakes.
There are other characters in the book but I feel that explaining their backstory might give away the story.
Overall thoughts:
I am immediately buying the next book. It's a great edition to anyone's LitRPG library. If I do have a criticism of this book it is very minor. I would have liked the author to expand the dropped items. Food, crafting materials, quest loot, seeds. Just more variety than weapons and armour.
