Publisher's Summary

From the authors of the New York Times best-selling novel Welcome to Night Vale and the number one podcast of the same name comes a mystery exploring the intersections of faith and science, the growing relationship between two young people who want desperately to trust each other and the terrifying, toothy power of the Smiling God.

Nilanjana Sikdar is an outsider to the town of Night Vale. Working for Carlos, the town's top scientist, she relies on fact and logic as her guiding principles. But all of that is put into question when Carlos gives her a special assignment investigating a mysterious rumbling in the desert wasteland outside of town.

This investigation leads her to the Joyous Congregation of the Smiling God, and to Darryl, one of its most committed members. Caught between her beliefs in the ultimate power of science and her growing attraction to Darryl, she begins to suspect the Congregation is planning a ritual that could threaten the lives of everyone in town. Nilanjana and Darryl must search for common ground between their very different world views as they are faced with the Congregation's darkest and most terrible secret.

WTNV does it again!

Another amazing and engaging novel, listened to the whole thing in two days and will do so again.
Incredible plot as always! Great representation, beautifully crafted characters, insightful philosophical queries, the perfect amount of weirdness and the best kind of continuity. Not to mention Baldwin's soothing and hypnotic voice.

Read by the only person who could do it justice!

The story is wonderful and spoke to me strongly, it was the right over at the right time and I appreciate having had it in my life.

Thank you to all for writing it.

It Delivers

A fine addition to the Night Vale universe, although it can also be enjoyed as a stand alone. Lots of plot twists and unexpected incidents as religion and science meet head on, and of course a whole bunch of the darkest humour too.

Cecil Baldwin’s narrative is top notch as ever and he brings all the various characters to life with his dependable rock solid delivery.

Podcast doesn’t translate well to book format

It’s ok...I mean, I’m a fan of the podcast, but honestly this story wasn’t great, I didn’t really care about the characters and it dragged on a little. Only 3 stars because I liked the narrator performance. If I was reading the actual book it would be 2 stars

Better as audiobook

Just as Welcome to Night Vale I chose the audio book version of It Devours. Personally I think I enjoyed the story more as an audio book since it felt like an extended version of the podcasts.

It Devours (just as the predecessor) is a story for fans of the podcast. Without an understanding of Night Vale and it’s wonderful quirks I think readers are going to struggle. However, unlike the first book It Devours is more focused on a singular story. It is easier to follow so would probably be the better one to pick up if you were brand new to Night Vale.

I enjoyed the characters and story more in It Devours. There was still plenty of overlap with established Night Vale residents and you see how the main characters from the previous book have moved on, so thats nice - but I preferred that this time I got to know new characters and went on the journey with them.

Amazing twist and powerful character development

They do it again and they do it in the style of Nightvale. This novel feels like that second part of a trilogy, the best part of course. Can't wait for their third novel.

As expected, & yet, it still exceeds expectations

This was a really tender, pensive piece of work. strangely, I feel like I understand reality more having read a very surreal book. Cecil narrates it perfectly, the writing is as inspired and touching as ever, and the story itself is typically strange, yet seemed more touching than outright funny as the first book had been. This isn't a bad thing though. It was perfect. <3

Sublime weirdness. Great addition/starting point

As a long time listener of the podcast this is a great expansion, but easily works as an oak doorway into Night Vale.
Great performance from Cecil, and a clever story weaving in some good touches.
Joyfully I devoured

INTERLOPER!

Another fantastic story from the world of Night Vale! I loved Nilanjana and I think she was a fantastic, expressive main character. It was also great to have Carlos, Cecil and the rest of their family as active characters of the story. The Joyous Congregation of the Smiling God was a totally creepy religion but there was also so many great people devoted to it that made for an excellent plot. I definitely don't want to be devoured by a Smiling God but I did enjoy being devoured by this book.
