At 29, Kelsey Miller had done it all: crash diets, healthy diets, and nutritionist-prescribed "eating plans", which are diets that you pay more money for. She'd been fighting her un-thin body since early childhood and, after a lifetime of failure, finally hit bottom. No diet could transform her body or her life. There was no shortcut to skinny salvation. She'd dug herself into this hole, and now it was time to climb out of it.

From the extra pounds and bullies that left her eating lunch alone at school to the low self-esteem that left her both physically and emotionally vulnerable to abuse, Jasmin Singer's weight defined her life. Even after she embraced a vegan lifestyle and a passion for animal rights advocacy, she defied any skinny vegan stereotypes by getting heavier. It was only after she committed to juice fasts and a diet of whole foods that she lost almost a hundred pounds and realized what it means to be truly full.

Story
Precociously intelligent, imaginative, energetic, and ambitious, Marya Hornbacher grew up in a comfortable middle-class American home. At the age of 5, she returned home from ballet class one day, put on an enormous sweater, curled up on her bed, and cried because she thought she was fat. By age 9, she was secretly bulimic, throwing up at home after school, while watching Brady Bunch reruns on television and munching Fritos. She added anorexia to her repertoire a few years later and took great pride in her ability to starve. Marya's story gathers intensity with each passing year. By the time she is in college and working for a wire news service in Washington D.C., she is in the grip of a bout of anorexia so horrifying that it will forever put to rest the romance of wasting away. Down to 52 pounds and counting, Marya becomes a battlefield: her powerful death instinct at war with the will to live. Why would a talented young girl go through the looking glass and slip into a netherworld where up is down, food is greed, and death is honor? Why enter into a love affair with hunger, drugs, sex, and death? Marya Hornbacher sustained both anorexia and bulimia through 5 lengthy hospitalizations, endless therapy, the loss of family, friends, jobs, and ultimately, any sense of what it means to be "normal." In this vivid, emotionally wrenching memoir, she recreates the experience and illuminates the tangle of personal, family, and cultural causes underlying eating disorders.

In this searing, unflinchingly honest book, Portia de Rossi captures the complex emotional truth of what it is like when food, weight, and body image take priority over every other human impulse or action. She recounts the elaborate rituals around eating that came to dominate hours of every day, from keeping her daily calorie intake below 300 to eating precisely measured amounts of food out of specific bowls and only with certain utensils. When this wasn’t enough, she resorted to purging and compulsive physical exercise, driving her body and spirit to the breaking point.

I’m missing out on my life. What’s wrong with me? If that’s ever crossed your mind, and if you know there’s more to life than what you’ve been living, this audiobook is for you. It sucks to acknowledge that you are what’s keeping you from the life you want. You sacrifice what you want most for what you want in the moment. You know everything you’re supposed to do, and yet you feel stuck - limited by your past, overwhelmed by your future - in a purgatory of your own behavior.

Best 7 Hours Listening to an Audio Book Ever!
- By ccreads on 02-20-16
By: Shonda Rhimes
Publisher's Summary
A heartbreakingly honest, endearing memoir of incredible weight loss by a young food blogger who battles body image issues and overcomes food addiction to find self-acceptance.
All her life, Andie Mitchell had eaten lustily and mindlessly. Food was her babysitter, her best friend, her confidant, and it provided a refuge from her fractured family. But when she stepped on the scale on her 20th birthday and it registered a shocking 268 pounds, she knew she had to change the way she thought about food and herself; that her life was at stake.
It Was Me All Along takes Andie from working class Boston to the romantic streets of Rome, from morbidly obese to half her size, from seeking comfort in anything that came cream-filled and two-to-a-pack to finding balance in exquisite (but modest) bowls of handmade pasta. This story is about much more than a woman who loves food and abhors her body. It is about someone who made changes when her situation seemed too far gone and how she discovered balance in an off-kilter world. More than anything, though, it is the story of her finding beauty in acceptance and learning to love all parts of herself.

Wanted to love this...
Any additional comments?
I really wanted to love this because I've enjoyed Andie Mitchell's blog over the years. At first I was on board with her (the author's) narration but, as the book, progressed, the over. emphasizing. of. every. word. flat out got on my nerves. I understand this was her journey (which is more than food and losing weight) but I was hoping for more about her weight-loss process. What worked for her and why. It was included in the book but really only took up about 45 minutes of the narration, all told. Decent listen but I was hoping for so much more and I wish a professional had narrated it

INSPIRING!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
YES, I would recommend this book because it is honest. It also made me think and relate to the author. I had a revelation about eating reading this book.
What other book might you compare It Was Me All Along to and why?
None that I can think of, I haven't read many diet/weight loss books to compare - the ones I have read never really inspired me like this one did. I think it's because Andie is realistic.
What about Andie Mitchell’s performance did you like?
She has a bright, positive voice that you want to listen to. Not monotone.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Revelation and inspiration is a life-long lesson in being healthy
Any additional comments?
I did adore this book, and I enjoy her recipes on her blog. Honestly, she really makes sense in her idea about being healthy and binge eating. She maintains that nothing will ever fill you up when you're binge eating. I also found it interesting about after losing weight, after finally realizing she was emotional eating, she had nothing to turn to except to deal with the emotion. Very interesting.
I bookmarked a great passage of the book for motivation and inspiration, it's very rare that I find a book that In find this inspiring and one I think about often.

This book is amazing!!
I have never wrote a review but I definitely had to after listening to this book. This book is for anyone who has ever had a problem with emotional eating. Everything the author wrote sounded as if I were writing my own story. Of course she is much better at writing than I and more descriptive of details. It's not necessarily a diet book but one that talks about her emotions and her struggle always being the bigger person in the group. It resonated with me in the fact that when she lost her weight she still had the same issues as before just now she was thinner. I have contemplated weight loss surgery but came to the realization that it's not that I am hungry and needs lots of food but I eat my feelings and emotions just like the author. I also had an aha moment that making my stomach smaller would not help unless I cleared up my food issues. The author talks honesty and openly about her struggles and let's us see that we are not alone. There are actually others out there that have the same issues. I encourage you to read her blog and order her cookbook.

Too slow and descriptive
I was excited to read this book because I relate to it and food addiction is a very real thing
I thought it would be an exciting and insightful story , it was but it is SLOW and extremely descriptive everything is described in great detail with every adjective
There are very very few funny moments the narration is sad sounding it drags on and on
It makes it a little more dramatic than it needs to be
It’s over done. It definitely had some inspiring parts and a good story to back it but it’s gets lost in all of those adjectives

Overloaded with adjectives
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Couldn't get past the introduction. There is such a thing as being too descriptive. I really wanted to hear what she had to say, but she wouldn't get to the point. Adjectives were overused to the point it felt like a grade school assignment of "Name as many words as you can think of to describe cake." I was nauseated and bored two minutes in.
What do you think your next listen will be?
Anything but this.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
It felt like author/narrator was trying to be sexy and breathless, which was out of place for this book. It only made the extra adjectives that much worse.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Thankful that audible allows you to return a book.

This book was amazing. It hit very close to home for me. I didn't have an alcoholic father, but I did have a dad whose moods ruled the house and it really has caused many emotional issues within myself.
This book was thought provoking and beautiful. I am so so thankful that Andie wrote the book, and that I chose to "read" it.

Where does It Was Me All Along rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
One of my favourites so far, and i don't really like biographies. This was a superb listen very detailed. I felt like I was there with her, at the turning points in her book.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Main Character, she does not hold back all the thought processes she had
Have you listened to any of Andie Mitchell’s other performances? How does this one compare?
I have not listened to any other books from this author. However, this has lead me on the band wagon

Engaging but...
This was one of those books that I listened to constantly. Whenever I had a second I would choose it over music but there was something annoying about it too. We never found out if she stays on her medication, or if she paid her poor Mum back for her surgery. Maybe it’s cos she lost her weight so young but it seemed very easy for her. Overall, I enjoyed it though.

Wonderful to listen to the audio and have the writer's tone and intention through every Page.
Will miss this book on my morning drive to work! Well Done!
