Crispin Tredarloe never meant to become a warlock. Freed from his treacherous master, he's learning how to use his magical powers the right way. But it's brutally hard work. Not everyone believes he's a reformed character, and the strain is putting unbearable pressure on his secret relationship with waste-man Ned Hall. Ned's sick of magic. Sick of the trouble it brings, sick of its dangerous grip on Crispin and the miserable look it puts in his eyes, and sick of being afraid that a gentleman magician won't want a street paper-seller forever....

England, 1904. Two years ago, Captain Archie Curtis lost his friends, fingers, and future to a terrible military accident. Alone, purposeless, and angry, Curtis is determined to discover if he and his comrades were the victims of fate, or of sabotage. Curtis's search takes him to an isolated, ultra-modern country house, where he meets and instantly clashes with fellow guest Daniel da Silva. Effete, decadent, foreign, and all-too-obviously queer, the sophisticated poet is everything the straightforward British officer fears and distrusts.

✨Can’t believe I almost missed out on this !!!
I was so enamored with Lucien and Stephen and after reading the first three books, I thought to myself:
‘What’s the point of continuing with this series if the most charming couple isn’t the main focus’
‘How could I ever fall for a couple the way I fell for these two’
‘Who wants to read a story about that gross icky Jonah anyways?? I can’t even stand that guy’
BOY OH BOY WAS I WRONG 😲.. 😍
Wowww, I really can’t believe I almost missed out on this. I felt more for this couple than I have for any other book. I was brought to tears. At times the story was sweet and tender and lovely. At other times it was heartbreaking, despairing and absolutely crushing.
Jonah is amazing, such a sweet guy who had a tough break in life and with no guidance, made poor choices. Ben was a sweet guy as well and was so desperately in love with Jonah and yet so utterly hurt by him. Who could trust such a flighty character with their heart? ♥️
I’m so thankful that Kj Charles has shared this gem with us. And of course, Cornell Collins brought it all together. Stunning performance !!!
If you have any doubts.. ignore them and get this book ☺️

Perfect Second Chance Romance
I've read or listened to most of Charles's books and enjoyed them all. I think this one is the best. Part of the Magpie universe but perfectly readable on its own, Jackdaw is a exemplar of the Second Chance Romance. The lies and betrayals that initally separate the couple seem insurmountable obstacles to the HEA. But though the characters poor choices have dire consequences, they also have realistic understandable motivations. So you can't help but root for the couple as they find their way back to each other.

Gorgeous book, beautiful narration
Possibly my favorite KJC book. It doesn't matter how often I read or listen (and I adore listening) to this book, I am always finding new things to love. The scene in the bar at the end is masterful and so very funny. The only other single scene I've enjoyed so much is in A Gentleman's Position when everyone plays out David's plans. I am always brought to happy tears by the end of this book as well.
Audio: I love this narrator, I love how distinct his voices are, and the emotion he puts into his portrayal. Plus, he has a wonderful voice. I admit his choices are some times questionable, but I'm also assuming he was either given no direction for the voices or given bad direction.

Half the action, Double the sweet heartache
Although set in the magpie world, this book is different in tone as it switches from the Crane/Day couple to follow thief Jonah and cop Ben. The gothic horror backdrop is entirely gone, as is the upper crust setting that came with Lord Crane. The mystery and action procedural is replaced with an angsty, tragic story of two lovers torn asunder by circumstance, on the run and in despair.
There’s only a few scenes with the series’ old regulars. And, because we’re telling Jonah/Ben’s story, we only see the series regulars as the public sees them: aloof, menacing Crane; unbending justiciary Stephen; brute enforcer Merrick; and swift, sassy Saint.
The first half of the book is a grim journey of poverty and pain. The second half turns the corner into a sweet and ultimately uplifting HEA for our MM couple, but the listener is still left with a scarred heart. I preferred the darker, monster mystery stories of the first three books, but this tear jerker won me over by the end.

Amazing
I have loved this reader from the first book and still do. As for the storyline I didn’t know how to feel about it, mostly because it was against the characters that I grow to love. But as the story went on I learned to love the side characters just as much and the resolution to the story is just too perfect. It’s like a wonderful extended story to the series main books and only adds without any detracting.

Not as good
A litte bit of spoiler in this reveiw. Have highlighted it just in case....
I loved the first 3 books of the magpie world. all 3 of them gripped me from start to finish. So I was excited when I saw that the story continued from a different view point and characters. But for me, this book was weak, dull and just went nowhere. The start was great and thrilling but once they were on the run, it felt like the same story of Ben mopping about and J asking for forgiveness all the time.
MINI SPOILER.....
Nothing excited happened in a thrilling way BUT what i did like was them falling back in love again. The ending felt rushed and too Disney like ending. Please don't get me wrong, I'm happy of the ending but, it just was too sugary happy and nice nice nice.
END OF SPOILER.........
Plus also, I do cringe at the sex parts. Man on man sex isn't like that at all. I get it that it's a fantasy but as a gay man himself, it did make me tut a bit. If only it was that easy. Lol.
As always the reader was spot on. Although 1 thing that I struggled with, Ben and J sounded very alike so at times I struggled to understand who was talking. BUT that didn't take away the story and I can't wait to hear the next book. Just hope it's a bit more gripping.

Brilliant spin off!
I am a big fan of the Charm of Magpies series and I was so looking forward to a spin off of the main storyline characters. I so quickly grew to love Jonah and Ben, and the cross over parts with the central characters from the other books were so good. There was less drama and heavy plot lines than some of the other books but I loved it just as much!

Charming addition to a wonderful series!
Windwalker, Jonah Pastern, steals and creates havoc wherever he goes. Ex-policeman, Ben Spenser, knows this only too well. Having been lied to, imprisoned, and abandoned by Jonah, he is bent on revenge. This charming and moving redemption story is perhaps my most favourite of the wonderful Charm of Magpies series, being a thorough character study of Ben and his relationship with Jonah. Alternating flashbacks with the present meant I had to concentrate hard on the audiobook to determine which time frame I was in, but I adjusted over time. Cornell Collins does a another stellar job of narrating the audiobook.
