Publisher's Summary

The Kaul siblings battle rival clans for honor and control over an East Asia-inspired fantasy metropolis in Jade Legacy, the pause-resisting conclusion to the Green Bone Saga.

Jade, the mysterious and magical substance once exclusive to the Green Bone warriors of Kekon, is now coveted throughout the world. Everyone wants access to the supernatural abilities it provides, from traditional forces such as governments, mercenaries, and criminal kingpins, to modern players, including doctors, athletes, and movie studios. As the struggle over the control of jade grows ever larger and more deadly, the Kaul family, and the ancient ways of the Kekonese Green Bones, will never be the same.

Battered by war and tragedy, the Kauls are plagued by resentments and old wounds as their adversaries are on the ascent and their country is riven by dangerous factions and foreign interference. The clan must discern allies from enemies, set aside bloody rivalries, and make terrible sacrifices...but even the unbreakable bonds of blood and loyalty may not be enough to ensure the survival of the Green Bone clans and the nation they are sworn to protect.

A sweeping saga

True to its name, the final book in the GBS is a sweeping tale spanning more than twenty years chronicling the key events starting from the aftermath of Jade War. Fonda once again anchors us in the roots of this trilogy: family and clan politics. And we get ample doses of both. Though Anden, Wen, and Hilo showed immense development in the 2nd book, their characterizations plateau in Jade Legacy. Shae, whom I found lacking in book 2, gets an even lesser development or an arc here.

The spotlight in Jade Legacy is instead split among a larger cast, most notably the next generation Kauls. We get enough characterization to grasp the motivations and personalities of Niko, Ru, and Jaya, but I wish we had more page-time dedicated to fleshing out the intergenerational dynamics between them and Hilo-Shae-Wen.

Politics has been a central cog to this machine and Fonda spends a lot of time in setting the stage before letting it all unfold. Poetic justice is never overrated, and the way Fonda delivers her justice for certain key antagonists like Bero and Ayt Mada deserves a special mention.

The clan is my blood, and the Pillar is my master. The GBS is a series that I won't forget for a good long time to come. It has firmly cemented itself over the course of its three books as the best written speculative fantasy in my recent memory. To those who say otherwise, I offer you a clean blade.

Wonderful book

This was a fantastic finish to the trilogy. The pacing was a little slow at times, but that only served to lull you into a false sense of security when things ramp back up again.

depressing

there's no triumphant ending, everybody dies, nothing is really gained... just a story of people with super human abilities doing human things. it was a slog after the middle of book 3 and I teared up at the end but I was disappointed that there wasn't some amazing end after all that destruction and endless fighting. I thought the narration was excellent but underwhelmed by the story.

Is it over yet...

After two books with the main characters, we have to hit the fast forward button to learn about the children. Problem is I don't really care about the kids. The book pacing felt bad and the final climax felt forced. The book felt like it just dragged on and on.

i am here for the emotional damage <3

have you ever been personally attacked by a book series? (because I have!)

The Green Bone Saga by Fonda Lee, which includes Jade City, Jade War, and Jade Legacy, deserves all the hype!

Rating: 5/5 ⭐

Overview: Two clans battle with fists and politics to control the island nation of Kekon and its precious gem Jade, which gives certain people magical abilities. Enter a many-decade saga of how the No Peak clan fights with all they have (literally) to take down the Mountain clan, who will do anything to come out on top.

Things to look forward to: amazing worldbuilding, unique magic system, decades of story telling over the series, multiple POV that follows the main events, moves & counter-moves, family values

CW: violence, death, murder, implied sexual assault, implied pedophilia, main character death, homophobic society (seen as 'bad luck'), abelist society, adultery, ...and I'm sure many more!

I honestly cannot express how amazing this series is! As someone who doesn't usually do mafia/gang violence (or any really), I thoroughly enjoyed the emotional rollercoaster that this amazing story provided. The audiobooks were phenomenal, so I strongly recommend those!

Fav character: Anden is an adopted cousin of the Kaul family and the /only/ main character that is gay. He has a special ability with Jade even above and beyond other green bones, and yet chose a different path so that he wouldn't follow the same fate as his birth family. Such an integral character and I love him so much!

Fav love-to-hate character: Hilo is the Fist of the No Peak clan and ruthless to the core. He's also an amazing leader and looks out for family...almost a little too zealously.

Bad-ass Females: Ayt Mada is the leader of the rival Mountain clan and a true mastermind. Kaul Shae is an amazing strategist and has so much heart.

Is it worth the emotional damage?: 1000000000% yes

Weakest of the series

I loved the fist book, but each book drops off from the last. The time jumps leave little tension in the story and are anticlimactic.

Spectacular and epic journey

The third book in the Green Bone Saga is the most exciting, inspiring, heart rending, epically finished book of the whole series. It has everything I could ever want in the final book of a series and I am so happy with the incredible ending.

This is a must-read series for fantasy lovers of all kinds. A game changer.

My only gripe with all the books is that the narrator is really not my favorite. The way he reads makes people and situations sound childish at times. For the most part it’s a decent narration, but I feel that someone like Steven Pacey or Tim Gerard Reynolds would make the series sound like the true epic that it is.

Fantastic character work. Heartbreakingly good. The Kaul family will live with me for a long, long time.

Probably the best trilogy of the last ten years.

Like a contemporary The godfather with fantasy

We love listening to this as a (mature) family. The characters are complex and interesting. There are unexpected turns like the rest of the saga. The start of this book feels a little bit more rushed than the previous books but it settles down after half way.
If you liked the previous books this won't disappoint.
And like the previous books the narration was excellent.
