Publisher's Summary

“I felt I was interviewing James Patterson under the highest permissible does of sodium pentothal, the truth serum, for hours—and he spilled the whole story of his truly astonishing life.”—Bob Woodward

How did a kid whose dad lived in the poorhouse become the most successful storyteller in the world?

  • On the morning he was born, he nearly died.
  • Growing up, he didn’t love to read. That changed.
  • He worked at a mental hospital in Massachusetts, where he met the singer James Taylor and the poet Robert Lowell.
  • While he toiled in advertising hell, James wrote the ad jingle line “I’m a Toys ‘R’ Us Kid”.
  • He once watched James Baldwin and Norman Mailer square off to trade punches at a party.
  • He’s only been in love twice. Both times are amazing.
  • Dolly Parton once sang “Happy Birthday” to James over the phone. She calls him J.J., for Jimmy James.
  • Three American presidents have invited him to golf with them.

How did a boy from small-town New York become the world’s most successful writer? How does he do it? He has always wanted to write the kind of novel that would be read and reread so many times that the binding breaks and the book literally falls apart. As he says, “I’m still working on that one.”

James Patterson by James Patterson is the most anticipated memoir of 2022.

Critic Reviews

“One of the greatest storytellers of all time, Patterson has led an amazing life. James Patterson by James Patterson brings to mind Hemingway’s A Moveable Feast. I love the pithy, bright anecdotes, and at times, his poignant narrative will bring you to tears.” (New York Times best-selling author Patricia Cornwell)

“The book was damn near addictive. I loved it. Patterson recounts turning points and life-shaping lessons in short riveting bursts that inform, entertain, and satisfy - then propel you into the next story. That Patterson guy can write!” (Ron Howard)

“James Patterson does it again. The master storyteller of our times takes us on a funny, poignant, and ultimately triumphant journey through his own life. If you are among the many millions of us who enjoy reading Patterson’s books, or if you haven’t discovered him yet, you’ll love reading this one, too.” (Hillary Rodham Clinton)

What a joy.

I’ve only read a few of Patterson’s nonfiction work as the violence in most of his fiction does not appeal to me.
I don’t know what encouraged me to pick this up but I’m glad I did. Aside from it being unexpectedly hysterically funny, Patterson shows who he is as a person.
He shares his humanity in grieving a lost love, the life lessons he learned and lives from his blue collar upbringing, his repugnance at injustice and attempts to change it, his love of reading and his monumental efforts and support for children’s literacy

Febrile; uninteresting

I was headed for a long road trip and decided to give James a try. It didn’t work out. I pulled to a rest area and looked for something else. James gave too many vibes of a spoiled, stoned-out, Vietnam protestor, with an annoying Bronx accent. In the book, he talked about writing with someone across from him and wanting to keep them there until the book was done. Well, I feel asleep and fell out of the chair. Next…

I liked it!

James Patterson book was very interesting. I was surprised that I liked this because his books are rather exciting but he gives good insight and advice and comes from low/middle classes background. He works hard and Seems to really be a nice guy! I’d love to meet him someday!

James Patterson StoryTeller

Loved this book! Have been a fan of Patterson's books for years but have never heard his voice! Such an endearing man and stories of his life. Enjoyed listening to him. I have always wondered why he co writes, wondered if mostly a money motive but loved his reasoning. What an exceptional mentor! Thank you James Patterson for all you have done, continue doing by helping writers, readers, teachers and the youth!

A storytellers story

I enjoyed listening to Mr. Patterson‘s book while driving over the Cascade mountain range.

Many of his stories have themes that will intertwine with your own.

Now, I’m looking forward to reading many of his other books.

If you like stories..

This book was a surprise but then again, not. It didn’t read from the beginning of his life to the present in the typical sense but was a timeline of stories. Beautiful stories. Real, humorous, and sometimes heart wrenching. It made me fall in love again with James Patterson, the author. And it made me want to figure out how to write a good outline.

Surprising

Make no mistake he’s a more successful writer than I could ever be… or most people on earth... But that’s what makes the one grating aspect of this book all the more strange and inexcusable— a vast neediness comes thru, an unquenchable desire for affirmation to an absurdly petty degree. Telling us all the colleges his son got into, listing them? Puh-lease… some nuggets here but he needed an editor to whittle it down to at least half…
