Publisher's Summary

Why were the teachings of the original Christians brutally suppressed by the Roman Church?

  • Because they portray Jesus and Mary Magdalene as mythic figures based on the Pagan Godman and Goddess
  • Because they show that the gospel story is a spiritual allegory encapsulating a profound philosophy that leads to mythical enlightenment
  • Because they have the power to turn the world inside out and transform life into an exploration of consciousness

Drawing on modern scholarship, the authors of the international best-seller The Jesus Mysteries decode the secret teachings of the original Christians for the first time in almost two millennia and theorize about who the original Christians really were and what they actually taught. In addition, the book explores the many myths of Jesus and the Goddess and unlocks the lost secret teachings of Christian mysticism, which promise happiness and immortality to those who attain the state of Gnosis, or enlightenment. This daring and controversial book recovers the ancient wisdom of the original Christians and demonstrates its relevance to us today.

The truth will set you free, but first it will piss you off !

This book is freeing, liberating and has been extremely helpful to align myself with the hunches I have already been onto about history. I study, read and research much information about Jesus. I’ve read and listened to many different books about the eastern cutler, Buddhism, Hinduism, ancient sages of old, Egypt and so on. I have read the Hebrew Old Testament cover to cover. I’ve read the New Testament also cover to cover… I have been searching for answers and finding many. After a near death experience I personally barley survived, I have clung to a savior in my mind…. After being forcibly raised as a child in the Morman church, I struggled in my 20s to free myself of the brain washing and manipulations of their cult. I’ve dove into Scientology, and quickly got out of the water so to speak, just as fast as I dove in. I’ve read books on Catholicism and was left feeling simply… dirty. I’ve searched, studied and wandered. I denounced socialist ways by my early 30s on my own, after years of disgust with the social norm. Not because someone or a book told me I should… but from personal experience and massive let downs and dissatisfaction in government and social media driven fake lies and the falsities of the news and misrepresented lives people live publicly on Facebook…. I turned the t.v. off completely 7 years ago. Haven’t seen a movie in 4 years and I’ve been reading instead. I don’t have a Facebook page and not to brag but honestly I just don’t want one…… I’ve been blazing my own trail…. I’ve been open minded for years now into my late 30s and I stumbled upon Christian mysticism…. But perhaps not stumbled into but “led” . After all I love Jesus, and Jesus loves me… and the simple beautiful understanding of the Jesus inside me brings joy to my heart and a smile to my face. I’ve been into New Age crystals and rocks, taro cards and angel guides… gosh maybe I’ve dabbled in just about everything other than my short studies of the Muslim religion that reminded me oh too much about the Mormon cult I was quote, unquote “raised in”…. I love Buddhist ones-ness and that all things are interconnected. I’ve seen the connections manifest before my eyes, and manifest into my life…. But after nearly dying-Literally. I’ve clung to Jesus. I even have a Jesus cross tattoo on my arm and wear a cross every day….. I get asked a lot. Are you catholic? I simply reply, yes, yes I am. And my studies have me ready with the answers to the questions they often ask. But in No way do I consider myself “catholic” mentally or definitely. I also get asked often are you Christian? I also always simply say, yes, yes I am. I also have Asian tattoos of dragons and koi fish and other Asian symbols… some times I even get asked… are you Buddhist… I also always reply… yes, yes I am. For years now I have found the simple, yes… for the sake of no contention with a potential opposing party wanting to start a debate with me sure saves me a lot of time not getting to know the person to closely…. Or falling ill to their cast judgment upon me… I’ve tried saying I was atheist for awhile…. Post leaving the Morman cult as a teenager but that didn’t last long. One thing leads to another and my thirst for knowledge has led me once again to a brilliant understanding of the “gospel” and the manipulation of corrupt governments and religions for power, wealth and gain…. Long story short if you read my review this far… this book shed new light, brighter light even into the window of my understanding of God and Jesus. - My recommendation is simply, don’t get offended to quickly. It’s not the end of the world, nor the second coming of Christ if you keep listening to even chapter 5… maybe 6. By then, fear will reside and you will realize many things that have been right before you eyes all along. But social norms have blinded you from seeing them. The truth will set you free, but fist it will piss you off…. A lovely quote from a brilliant poet ! I couldn’t agree with the statement more. Honestly if a book starts to make me mad… simply, I’ve come to realize it’s a “good” thing, so I keep reading or listening to it. - Thank you for this research to the authors. Thank you ! Brilliant work and well written to the new generations seeking truth !

Think outside the box

I loved this book! It's definitely an eye opener. One will have to think outside of their "religious box" to get through this book. If you're searching for TRUTH, I HIGHLY recommend this book.

Great information, however now outdated

The insight into the Gnostic religion and its understanding are amazing and much needed in the greater understanding of religion, how it has been molded and manipulated by both ego, and the needs of others to have a religious power by limiting knowledge of other beliefs that may give a credible basis for being an authentic and true truth towards the finding of God. The assumption that Jesus was imaginary (by the authors) has since been disproven with the Jesus family tomb discovery in 2010. But,the similarities between Jesus, Moses and as demonstrated in the writing, there may have been intentional reworkings of what we understand to be "scripture" as nothing more than an ego-driven monk using a prophets name from the past to write his own interpretations of scripture that was bought into by "the church", or others with the same intention. Control of the ego as described and insight into the truths of spirits, possession, and psychic insight into the truths or 'knowing" can add clarity to those who have succeeded in finding your path to this point, or found out in the long run, that this is the truth of it all as you looked to find an answer as to why. It appears to this reader that the Gnostic faith is based upon a deeper sense of our place in the universe and God's perception through us and our power to rise if we understand the mind and consciousness and the power it can play in our lives vs. ignorance and being used by dark minds for which we are typically ignorant of. As this reader has personally discovered, God can work through us, this is what the Gnostic teaching is showing, and I feel that Jesus was preaching as well, as demonstrated in the Gospel of Mary Magdalene and the Gospel of Thomas. Make your psyche in God's image, but know the psychology of and the psychic of the mind as well to better control your life and to cleanse your mind of being used. which is part of the aspect of the Gnostic "knowing" as to know the truth of what is happening to the mind and to those who don't know or aren't in the knowing.

6 of ten

The meat and potatoes in the middle were good, but I didn't enjoy listening to the criticism of fundamentalists/literalists at the beginning and the end. It didn't seem balanced well between the views of the author and the views of those he is railing against. Also, while well-written, the author's views are pretty basic, spiritually-speaking. Just my two cents.

The book I’ve been searching for!

An absolutely life-changing explanation of the true roots of Christianity and it’s history. Beautiful description of Gnosis and spirituality versus religion and the possibilities of embracing Gnosis in our culture!

Deceptive Lies Distorting a Valuable Truth

Abound with Staggering Bias and Outright Lies and Manipulation . . . . A Grand Blanket of Deception.
I Love these Gospels , when told by non-biased objective souls . . . this naration has a very clear agnostic agenda . . . the Lies here told , are that one has to be a Non-Believer to be "enlightenment" . . . Complete and Utter Hogwash . . . IMHO . . . ;-)
