If you find it hard to stick to your timelines and always find yourself having to work under pressure because of deadlines due to procrastination, you are not alone! It’s just a commonly unavoidable activity which people just allow to take over their lives. Did you know that about 20 percent of the population admits that they procrastinate often? This lack of immediacy has also influenced the fast-paced environment you’re now in.

Story
Bittersweetness is a tendency to states of longing, poignancy, and sorrow; an acute awareness of passing time; and a curiously piercing joy at the beauty of the world. It recognizes that light and dark, birth and death - bitter and sweet - are forever paired. Susan Cain employs the same mix of research, storytelling, and memoir she used in Quiet to explore why we experience sorrow and longing, and how embracing the bittersweetness at the heart of life is the true path to creativity, connection, and transcendence.

Story
Journalist and screen/life balance expert Catherine Price argues persuasively that our always-on, tech-addicted lifestyles have led us to obsess over intangible concepts such as happiness while obscuring the fact that real happiness lies in the everyday experience of fun. We often think of fun as indulgent, even immature and selfish. We claim to not have time for it, even as we find hours a day for what Price calls Fake Fun - bingeing on television, doomscrolling the news, or posting photos to social media, all in hopes of filling some of the emptiness we feel inside.

Intelligence is usually seen as the ability to think and learn, but in a rapidly changing world, there's another set of cognitive skills that might matter more: the ability to rethink and unlearn. In our daily lives, too many of us favor the comfort of conviction over the discomfort of doubt. We listen to opinions that make us feel good, instead of ideas that make us think hard. We see disagreement as a threat to our egos, rather than an opportunity to learn.

What makes “cults” so intriguing and frightening? What makes them powerful? The reason why so many of us binge Manson documentaries by the dozen and fall down rabbit holes researching suburban moms gone QAnon is because we’re looking for a satisfying explanation for what causes people to join - and more importantly, stay in - extreme groups. We secretly want to know: could it happen to me? Amanda Montell’s argument is that, on some level, it already has.

Publisher's Summary
Make small changes to your surroundings and create extraordinary happiness in your life with ground-breaking research from designer and TED star Ingrid Fetell Lee.
Next Big Idea Club selection - chosen by Malcolm Gladwell, Susan Cain, Dan Pink, and Adam Grant as one of the "two most ground-breaking new nonfiction reads of the season!"
"This book has the power to change everything! Writing with depth, wit, and insight, Ingrid Fetell Lee shares all you need to know in order to create external environments that give rise to inner joy." (Susan Cain, author of Quiet and founder of Quiet Revolution)
Have you ever wondered why we stop to watch the orange glow that arrives before sunset or why we flock to see cherry blossoms bloom in spring? Is there a reason people - regardless of gender, age, culture, or ethnicity - are mesmerized by baby animals and can't help but smile when they see a burst of confetti or a cluster of colorful balloons?
We are often made to feel that the physical world has little or no impact on our inner joy. Increasingly, experts urge us to find balance and calm by looking inward - through mindfulness or meditation - and muting the outside world. But what if the natural vibrancy of our surroundings is actually our most renewable and easily accessible source of joy?
In Joyful, designer Ingrid Fetell Lee explores how the seemingly mundane spaces and objects we interact with every day have surprising and powerful effects on our mood. Drawing on insights from neuroscience and psychology, she explains why one setting makes us feel anxious or competitive while another fosters acceptance and delight - and, most importantly, she reveals how we can harness the power of our surroundings to live fuller, healthier, and truly joyful lives.

Critic Reviews
"A completely original treatment of a completely new and original idea: we all have within the power to design joy into our lives. Joyful is an inexhaustible and exciting guide to what makes life good." (Arianna Huffington, New York Times best-selling author of Thrive, founder and CEO of Thrive Global and founder of Huffington Post)
"Joyful reveals the powerful notion that joy can be cultivated to flourish within all of us. This idea can change the world." (David Kelley, founder of the design and innovation company IDEO)
"Joyful overturns conventional wisdom about happiness: that it comes from within, and that experiences - not things - make us happier. Ingrid Fetell Lee's delightful book evokes the same positive feelings she describes. It is full of whimsy, wonder, energy, and joy. I loved it." (Sonja Lyubomirsky, professor of psychology, University of California, Riverside, and author of The How of Happiness)

This is the book I have been looking for...
"Joyful" has changed the way I look at my life and the world around me. I am inspired to fill my life and home with bright spots that bring me joy. I feel that I have been craving so many of the Aesthetics of joy that Ingrid Fetell Lee describes in her book for so long but not realizing what it was. With the tools she provides in this book I'm excited to start changing my environment and look forward to seeing how it will affect my life in general. incidentally, this is the first book I've listened to on Audible that I immediately wanted to start listening to again!

Boring read of an interesting book
Maybe it's because of my ADHD, but this was one of the hardest audiobooks to focus on. The author has a very soothing, calm voice, and I just kept zoning out. She gives everything the same weight, and similar intonations. I really, really struggled with paying attention to what she was saying, and wished through the whole book that it had been read by someone with a more dynamic voice and sense of storytelling, and it made me so grateful for the professional voiceover actors who narrate most of the audiobooks I listen to.
That said, I found a lot of the stuff in the book fascinating, and keep quoting it to people. About why rainbows excite us because they're abundance, and lightness, and color, and surprise all at the same time. About how tubemen got created for the Olympics in 2000 (they seem like something that has existed for so much longer!). I am so glad that I stuck with it and made it through (though I had to listen to some sections like 5 times to pay attention), because the material does speak to me, and I eventually absorbed a lot of it. It has changed the way I look at my surroundings. In my opinion, Ms. Lee is a much better writer and researcher than she is narrator.
There's really a lot of great stuff in this book. But if you have trouble with staying alert when a soothing voice talks to you, then I recommend reading the hard copy instead of doing the audiobook.
