Publisher's Summary

Juddie lay for a while staring up at the twinkling stars overhead. Spread thickly across the dark, clear heavens, they looked close enough to touch. "Someday," Juddie thought, "when I can read, I'll find out more about the stars from books." Ever since Juddie can remember, he has wanted to learn how to read and write. The nearest school, however, is many miles away, and Pa needs Juddie to help work their farm. With wonderful, vivid writing, Florence Wightman Rowland tells a heartwarming story that explores the adventures of a hardworking, lively young man growing up in the Canadian Rockies during the mid-1900s.

Emphasize the value of literacy!

My daughter and I loved the story. We finished reading it at once. Juddie is a
such a fine young boy who never lost his desire to learn how to read and write even though his father keeps telling him he's needed in the farm every time he ask permission from him if he could go to school. He never once complained about his work in their barn and continued to be of help to his family until the day he realized his dreams. The story teaches the value of obedience, love for family, hard work, showing kindness even to strangers. And sometimes this kindness to others will get back to you in a very unexpected way, allowing you to fulfill your deepest longing and dream.

Great encouragement for a struggling reader!

My kids really loved this book, and so did I! The respect and help that the main character (Juddie) shows is such a great example. I felt this book especially hit home with my oldest who does not enjoy reading very much, to listen to a story where a young boy has such a strong desire to learn to read was a big encouragement to him. Would definitely recommend this for all ages!
