In a remote corner of early Victorian England, where traditional practices remain untouched by time, Bathsheba Everdene stands out as a beacon of female independence and self-reliance. However, when confronted with three suitors, among them the dashing Sergeant Troy, she shows a reckless capriciousness that threatens the stability of the whole community. Published in 1874, and an immediate best seller, Far From the Madding Crowd established Thomas Hardy as one of Britain's foremost novelists.

Betrayed by the two men in her life - Alec D’Urberville, her seducer/rapist and father of her fated child; and Angel, her intellectual and pious husband - Tess takes justice, and her own destiny, into her delicate hands. In telling her desperate and passionate story, Hardy brings Tess to life with an extraordinary vividness that makes her live in the heart of the reader long after the novel is concluded.

Story
In the remote wildness of Egdon Heath, the crossed love affairs and marriages of a small group of people are played out against the background of nature’s beauty and indifference to mankind. Through a series of vivid incidents and encounters, The Return of the Native moves in a relentless drive towards tragedy, as the plans and dreams of the lovers miscarry, defeated by chance, or destiny or self-deception. In their unhappy stories, Hardy gives us a powerful dramatization of his bleak philosophy, his belief in man’s helplessness before the malevolence of the universe.

Two on a Tower is Hardy's ninth novel and contains perhaps his most complete use of the theme of love across the class and age divide, to beautifully depict Hardy's reverence for science and astronomy. The unhappily married Lady Constantine breaks all the rules of social etiquette when she falls in love with young Swithin St. Cleeve, an astronomer and her social inferior. Despite their differences that society deems unacceptable, together, from an astronomical observatory, the lovers 'sweep the heavens'.

Set during the time of the Napoleonic Wars, this classic gives a satirical picture of a worldly society. The novel revolves around the exploits of the impoverished but beautiful and devious Becky Sharp who craves wealth and a position in society. Calculating and determined to succeed, she charms, deceives and manipulates everyone she meets. A novel of early 19th-century English society, it takes its title from the place designated as the centre of human corruption in John Bunyan's 17th-century allegory.

Sons and Lovers, D. H. Lawrence's first major novel, was also the first in the English language to explore ordinary working-class life from the inside. No writer before or since has written so well about the intimacies enforced by a tightly knit mining community and by a family where feelings are never hidden for long. When the marriage between Walter Morel and his sensitive, high-minded wife begins to break down, the bitterness of their frustration seeps into their children's lives.

Publisher's Summary
Sexually innocent Jude Fawley is trapped into marriage by seductive Arabella Donn, but their union is an unhappy one and Arabella leaves him. Jude's welcome freedom allows him to pursue his obsession with his pretty cousin Sue Bridehead, a brilliant, charismatic free-thinker who would be his ideal soul mate if not for her aversion to physical love. When Jude and Sue decide to lead their lives outside marriage they bring down on themselves all the force of a repressive society. This fearless and outspoken story caused a furor on its publication, and was Hardy's last novel.

Left reeling
Well, that were a grim'un, to be sure. Jude, a decent man with ambitions to become a scholar, doesn't stand a chance in Hardy's cold universe. Let down by everyone he chooses as a mentor (one of them doesn't last long enough for a round trip from one village to the next); spurned by the university he longs to enter; and used and confused by the women in his life, he keeps trying to draw a smaller circle in the sand after each fresh assault, but ultimately he loses, and by then he doesn't care, and then he dies.
The women in his life are used and confused in turn, not so much by Jude as by the terrible straitjacket women were forced into. The love of his life, Sue, is particularly confused: she combines an open, somewhat flirtatious manner with a pathological aversion to sex that left me wondering if she'd been abused as a child. (Or better to say, since she's not real: wondering if Hardy intentionally set her character up to convey that.) She does finally overcome her aversion, to the extent of having children with Jude, but it's a fragile adjustment. And even the best-adjusted person would have trouble keeping their sanity when confronted by the major tragedy in this book of tragedies: an event that strikes suddenly and brutally in a few swift paragraphs and leaves the characters - and the reader - reeling.
Neville Jason has not been one of my favorite narrators in the past, but I'm warming up to him. Part of the pleasure of his performance here is the skill he shows in voicing the many characters, with their many accents and moods. There is humor here at times, and Jason brings it out in the voices of Arabella and other "country folk," who have no intellectual ambitions and are more willing to go with the flow. His characterization of Sue, to me, was somewhat less successful than his Jude; but his Jude is so brilliantly done, so exceptional in the way it conveys Jude's gentleness, rage, and despair, that I'm willing to give him five stars for the whole thing. I'll definitely make an effort, in the future, to listen to more of his readings.
Listen to it, by all means, but don't listen to it if you're depressed or even just having a bad day. It will exercise your compassion to the breaking point.

Another good, tragic Hardy Novel
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would the themes of being trapped outside of a dream are still relevant today.
What did you like best about this story?
He teaches about life lessons and the characters are memorable and relateable.
What does Neville Jason bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Speed.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
And you thought your life was miserable...
Any additional comments?
Great reader (and I am picky). Enjoyable story.

Very clear, in a slightly Jackanory kind of way.
I don’t ordinarily write reviews, but anyone taking the plunge on so many hours of listening deserves an opinion or two. Jude must have been a scandal in its time, and it’s still a rollicking listen, despite being dogged by a growing irritation with its primary characters as they kind of simper and dither their way towards oblivion. This may be somewhat exacerbated by the narrator’s ‘are you sitting comfortably, children?’ delivery; we can sometimes feel as though we are a bunch of credulous nine year-olds being assured that it’s okay, Aslan’s not dead. Or a sweet but dotty grandpa who might not have taken his pills. Hardy had the Victorian hots for Tess, steam coming out of his ears; maybe less so for Sue Bridehead, who starts perky but becomes creepingly more annoying as the book progresses - and takes Jude with her, as he ceaselessly acquiesces to ninnyism like the Honey Monster who loves his Mummy. But this may somewhat be the fault of the narration, which over-enunciates Sue into being drippy and winsome, and Jude into a kind of ‘aw shucks’ Eeyore in love. They tend to speak as if they are reminding each other that the tea-towels go in the bottom drawer, remember? Not a couple you would have over for dinner more than once. At least not in this rendition. Overall, clear, nice to have got it under my belt. But maybe you might prefer to read it, and afford yourself your own imaginations of the characters, rather than those somewhat grindingly forced upon you by the reader?

If you like Hardy novels, this won't disappoint
Personally, Thomas Hardy is one of my favorite authors, and I believe this to be one of his best works. If you've read Tess, Mayor of Casterbridge, or any of his other novels, you know what to expect. A tragic novel. A masterpiece of one at that. But, if you haven't read him before, and are not use to that type of novel, maybe you should start somewhere else with Hardy. This is by far the bleakest, most depressing, and possibly most tragic novel I've read from him. Beautiful, but tragic

As Good As It Gets for Hardy
I would recommend this Hardy Novel for anyone who is interested in perusing his work. It's not nearly so depressing as the rest. The Narrator did a very good job. It's a long story, best enjoyed when you have a long trip ahead or a lot of down time. Once you start into Jude the Obscure, you will be compelled to keep going. At least, I was. If you are already familiar with Hardy novels and his style of characters, you will find these ones as engaging. The thing I love about Hardy's characters is, whether good, bad, ugly or downright deplorable, he really nails them. They spring to life. Sue - I wanted to throttle her. There isn't quite the degree of tragedy in Jude that exists in Mayor of Casterbridge or Tess. This is an unforgettable Thomas Hardy classic. Definitely "entry level" Hardy.

If you’re looking for a Bildungsroman tragic book…..
I think this book is for classic lovers at heart.
It was read in British English which made it a bit difficult in the beginning, if you’d rather have an American accent find another version. Also, it was slow. I listened to it at a 1.6x times faster…
Tragic, a little boring at times, and yet: a Tom Hardy classic.

Sad indictment against marriage
This is another gripping but tragic Thomas Hardy novel. This one is quite heavy-handed. The writing style changes as Jude grows up and his views and experiences change. Its not my favorite Hardy novel but it is definitely worth the read. I don't want to discuss the story because it is full of surprises and I would be a spoiler if I talked about it. Just buy it and listen to it. You won't regret it (unless you are engaged to be married.)

A Pleasant Surprise for Me.
Would you listen to Jude the Obscure again? Why?
Great story but more importantly, brilliantly performed.
What did you like best about this story?
How well the author brought all the points he wanted to make about society and the modern and traditional thought of the time, through a combination of a good plot and crafted and sometimes incredibly explanatory dialog.
And it is a good story.
Which character – as performed by Neville Jason – was your favourite?
Richard Phillotson. Beautifully voiced. I liked this character. For much of the book Phillotson represents convention in progress. Unlike the main characters, when a difficult decision has to be made he does not prevaricate. He acts wisely. His decision is not based on tradition or on modern philosophies but on what he feels to be the human truth of the matter. The decision is greatly to his personal disadvantage but he accepts this because it was the right thing to do.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Yes. Reminded me of growing up. (up to a point. I still have all my kids)
Any additional comments?
I only tried this book by chance and I'm really glad I did.

A thoroughly depressing tale of human suffering
I enjoyed the story despite the repeated errors made by the main characters. Can't help feeling that Sue needed to take some personal responsibility but I guess that's how things were at this time, so more a commentary on the social pressures of the age, just when you think things can't get any worse Hardy deals yet another blow to the hopes of the fragile characters, who by the end you really want to find a little peace in their grim existences. Not a happy tale, but glad I read it nonetheless. Might give Hardy a break for a bit though...

Hard going
I have listened sequentuially to each of the Hardy Novels. This of course is the last of them. I am sorry to say that this is the only one that I have found to be a chore to listen to. The pace of the narrative is glacial and Jude's voicing does not, I'm afraid, match my hopes and expectations at all. Frankly, he is made to sound a bit like a village idiot . Sue (annooyingly pronounced Syue throughout) is not much better. Ths version seems to be circa two hours longer than all of the other options. I can see why. It just drags. Two thirds of the way through I am about to give up on it and read the final third myself. That way, at least, I can imbue Jude with a hint of savvy.

A great Classic by Thomas Hardy beautifully read and interpreted by the narrator. He really expressed Jude's feelings in all their anguish. Would definitely recommend this production.
