Story
Meet Felicity Merriman, a nine-year-old girl who's as spirited and independent as the American colonies she lives in. In 1774, Felicity's hometown of Williamsburg, Virginia, is buzzing with rumors: will the colonies soon break free from England's rule? Patriots like Felicity's father don't think it's fair to pay taxes to the King of England for things like tea that they buy in America. Loyalists like Felicity's grandfather and her best friend Elizabeth support the king.

Story
No one would accuse 11-year-old Caddie Woodlawn of being dainty and ladylike. In spite of her mother’s best efforts, Caddie is as wild as the wind, playing freely and rambunctiously with her two brothers in the Wisconsin backwoods. There are rafts to build and trees to climb and pranks to play. Caddie especially likes to watch her friend Indian John build birchbark canoes at the river. Every day seems wide with possibility - as wide as the frontier. But living on the edge of civilization has its risks, too....

Story
It is 1940 and William, 12, Edmund, 11, and Anna, nine, aren't terribly upset by the death of the not-so-grandmotherly grandmother who has taken care of them since their parents died. But the children do need a guardian, and in the dark days of World War II London, those are in short supply, especially if they hope to stay together. Could the mass wartime evacuation of children from London to the countryside be the answer?

Story
Told from four-year-old Laura's point of view, this story begins in 1871 in a little log cabin on the edge of the Big Woods of Wisconsin. Laura lives in the little house with her pa, her ma, her sisters Mary and Carrie, and their trusty dog, Jack. Pioneer life is sometimes hard for the family, since they must grow or catch all their own food as they get ready for the cold winter. But it is also exciting as Laura and her family celebrate Christmas with homemade toys and treats, do the spring planting, bring in the harvest, and make their first trip into town.

So when their reclusive, curmudgeonly landlord decides not to renew their lease, the five siblings have 11 days to do whatever it takes to stay in their beloved home and convince the dreaded Beiderman just how wonderful they are. And all is fair in love and war when it comes to keeping their home. A modern classic in the making reminiscent of the Penderwicks series.

Listening to it again and again
Our daughter has been entranced by Kaya and the exceptionally well read stories about her and her people since she started listening to it. We have now heard through it no less than five times. We are happy to have a balance to the white settler stories like Little House on the Prarie (also a great book, but concerning in its critique of native people) for our daughters. I have been nearly equally as intrigued... I think the much begged for trip to Idaho to visit the Nez Perce people may actually happen....

Wish all the AG historical books would be on Audible
We as a family love the Kaya series. It's fiction, although historically accurate and overseen by the Nez Perce elders. Frankly, I think it's the best of all the books! However, I do think that each and every American Girl book series should be available in Audible. Mattel is sure missing out on some revenue!

Amazing!
This was an amazing book! I love how Kaya puts up with her nickname “ Magpie” how she has enough strength to leave her little sister, how she helps Two hawks. She is a very courageous young girl. She cares very much for her younger sister and for her horse and dog. And letting Loan dog go must have been hard for her! If Kaya was real, she would for sure grow up to become a beautiful strong independent woman.
