Story
An abandoned old house in a small town northeast of Houston is the site of a second murder, eerily similar to a supposed cold case of 14 years earlier. FBI Agents CJ Johnston and Paige Riley are dispatched to find the link between the two homicides. The team, including Ice and Billy, find the case to be anything but cold. For CJ and Paige, juggling the investigation while trying to keep their love affair a secret proves to be as hard as uncovering long-buried clues.

Story
Twenty-three years ago, a young girl went missing. Two days later her body was found lodged beneath the footbridge over Boulder Creek. The murder shook the town but they soon found it was only the beginning. A serial killer hides among them - a serial killer who strikes twice, sometimes three times a year. Mason Cooper couldn’t wait to leave Gillette Park. At 18, she headed off to college and the bright lights of Los Angeles, thinking she'd never return home to the broken family and forgotten friendships she'd left behind.

Story
Investigative reporter Marty Edwards has found her niche: cold cases. She loves poring over old notes, hunting down long-forgotten witnesses, and digging down through the layers of an unsolved murder case. But this time, Marty is digging where someone obviously doesn't want her. And that someone might also include the Brownsville Police Department. Why else would they assign Detective Kristen Bailey to baby-sit her? Barely surviving two attempts on her life, Marty abandons Brownsville and the case. Danger follows her as the case turns red-hot.

FBI Agents Cameron Ross and Andrea Sullivan found the unexpected when they met amongst the warm red rocks and cliffs of Sedona - each other. That commitment, along with their ingenuity, courage and resolve, will be tested along the most barren of stretches in California's Mojave Desert. Someone is using the bleak highways to dump women's bodies, but in a landscape where an inviting road can curve into a sand-choked mirage, and a true oasis can be invisible under a white-hot sun, clues can blow away in the wind.

Publisher's Summary
While the investigations go on in Dallas and Baton Rouge after the disappearance of a senator's daughter, FBI agents CJ Johnston and Paige Riley are assigned to the sleepy backwoods of East Texas for a dead-end assignment to infiltrate an all-girls school.
Random disappearances dating back 50 years and more raise red flags that point to the tiny, isolated community of Hoganville. But CJ and Paige fear there will be little distraction from the memories of the one-night stand they shared six months ago.
Nevertheless, they integrate themselves into the lives of the teachers and staff, but soon the odd behavior of the townspeople has them convinced something sinister lurks there. Something, perhaps, that even the residents of Hoganville don't know about.

Kept me intrigued the entire time!
Not one for romance novels; however, lately I was turned on to them. I am more into murder mystery, serial killer (you know ... effed stuff), and more. This definitely has an effed up scenario about breaking into and destroying a cult. The romance was hot and you could feel the tension of the characters.
Between both of these aspects, the book kept me intrigued from being to end. I blew through the book in two days. I stayed up late and the moment I awoke, I put my headphones back on.
Now to the narration... it was hands down fabulous. Not many women can pull off men's voices very well, Abby Craden did. Also the flip flopping between characters was flawless. For me, if I can close my eyes and feel as if different characters are really talking and not just someone pretending to be these different voices; then they are good. Well, more than good ... they are awesome. Can't wait until the next book.

Not your usual Gerri Hill
It started out fairly interesting, then it got kind of slow and boring and finally unbelievable with a really hurried ending that left you wondering. I have read all of Gerri Hill's books and this did not even sound like her. I was very disappointed. I have always given her a 5 star rating but not this one.

Not Up To Gerri Hill's Norm
Suspension of disbelief is always difficult to maintain when the paranormal is included but when you add significant flaws like two trained investigators both remarking about how they wonder what is in a substance that a victim was given, to which they have easy access, and neither takes a sample to be tested, then you cannot maintain any level of that suspension. It just punches all kinds of holes in the plot

A romantic thriller, light horror with paranormal elements.
Hill's writing is as good as always.
The plot is captivating, I couldn't stop listening.
The characters are well written.
I especially liked the parts that were told from side characters' POVs.
The only problem with this book is the lack of trigger warning, and it definitely needs it, so here it is: child abuse, rape, suicide.

Really out there story worked really really well. Gerri Hill seems to be able to turn her hand to all genres with total confidence. I read the print edition of this in one sitting a few years ago. It was so bizarre and yet consuming, well written and with her usual amount of humour, sex and drama. Gerri Hill is really very good at the combination . Reviewing the story by having Abby Craden read it to me was a real treat, and I eagerly await more of the same from these two.

Great! Loved it!
Another fantabulous Gerri Hill - it is is an enjoyable story, the dialogue/interaction between the two main characters is very entertaining. There is lots of lesbian love making in the story - if you’re not into that you probably won’t like it. The main story line keeps you on your toes and is a little scary in places. Abby Craden as narraror does her usual fantastic job - she is one of the best narrators I’ve come across. Go on add it to your basket - you’ll have fun.

Have read the majority of Geri's books and this particular series is honestly my favourite. She's always done cop stories well but turns out she can do Eldritch horror even better.
