Story
Even at 37, with a challenging but rewarding career as a paramedic, Bella Gomez is treated as the baby of the family. It's made her allergic to anyone meddling, so she chooses to keep mostly to herself. Unfortunately, that doesn't stop her family from inserting themselves in her life. Nor does it deter the one man she knows she shouldn't get close to from showing up on her doorstep.

Publisher's Summary
Bookstore owner Kerry Emerson finally seems to be back in control of her life. Her failure of a marriage firmly in her rearview mirror and her recent business expansion a success, she is in charge of her own future. One that is looking better than ever.
The sight of the tall man, with the familiar salt-and-pepper goatee pushing open the door of her store, sets her hair on end. He doesn't exactly bring good memories.
FBI Special Agent in Charge Damian Gomez is just looking for a decent cup of coffee when he walks into the small store offering books and brew. The pretty, feisty woman behind the counter is an unexpected surprise. Not at all unpleasant, especially since her finger that used to hold a wedding ring is now bare.
Her wild hair, boho style, and silvery grey eyes suddenly hold a lot of promise.
But when his office is pulled into an international investigation into the trafficking of rare books and manuscripts, the straight-laced SAC realizes he has to keep his distance from the woman who might well be involved.
Easier said than done, since fate seems determined to throw them together.

Great new series!
Kerry has just opened up her 2nd bookstore and is enjoying her new found freedom, after a disastrous marriage. At the age of 42, she doesn’t believe that love is in the cards for her anymore...until she meets broody FBI SAC, Damian Gomez. Unfortunately, he suspects that she may be involved in a ring of rare book thefts. As the pair grow close, Damian realizes that Kerry is just a pawn but can he keep her safe long enough to prove that love IS possible after 40? Love that this series is focusing on mature characters...a refreshing change from the 20 & 30 somethings.

Keeping 6 is an exciting, intriguing and thrilling.. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. Kerry and Damian went through so much and their journey was highly suspenseful but the bond, connection, and chemistry was absolutely beautiful. I enjoyed every single mysterious second of this book. Romance Wrapped in a Whodunnit
This is the first book in a series of connected standalone stories. There is also some crossover of characters from other series by the same author. You don’t need to have read any of the other series to enjoy this book though.
I initially read this as an ebook and the majority of the review is based on that initial reading however, the audio version was well narrated and in particular I enjoyed the male narrator, Christian Fox, who had a pleasant voice and natural style of delivery. He also didn’t go ridiculously over the top when acting a female role, which some male actors do. The female narrator, Muffy Newton, I had mixed feelings about. She had a pleasant voice and a good range of delivery for the different characters, but she had an annoying quirk of lifting the pitch of her voice at the end of sentences as though each one was a question. I think it was her natural accent rather than delivery for this character, but it was a little annoying because it stood out so much against the other narrator. I learnt to tune it out, but it took a little time each time I went back to the audiobook after a break. It wasn’t annoying enough to stop me listening to the next book in the series, even if she’s the same narrator.
Kerry met Damien, an FBI agent, when he rescued her from a kidnapping. She didn’t really like him at the time, plus she was married, admittedly it wasn’t a happy marriage but nonetheless, she wasn’t free to act on any attraction to the handsome man, even if he hadn’t been an ass to her.
Now Kerry is divorced and living in Durango, where Damien is now based. She owns a bookstore, and when he walks in to buy a coffee sparks fly and neither of them can work out what kind those sparks are.
When Kerry gets drawn into a case Damien is working on, her life is once more put in danger and he can’t resist trying to protect her.
I really enjoyed this book. As always, Freya Barker writes about engaging, flawed and real characters who have life experience, which only makes them more interesting. There is passion and emotion between the two main characters. They are also surrounded by friends, family and colleagues, who also have distinct personalities and play their part in the storyline.
What makes this romance different is the very intriguing and complex whodunnit wrapped around it. It kept me guessing right up to the end, who the ‘bad guy’ could be. The suspense part of the plot helps move the romance part forwards, but even without the romance that part of the story is interesting.
I’m looking forward to reading the rest of this series, as I believe the next book is about Damien’s sister, who was a major supporting character in this book, and someone I liked.

Annoying narration
What is with the female narrator’s dragged out syllables and whiney drawn out tone? And I wonder why the decision was for the male narrator to do both the male and female main characters and the female narrator to do the same? Really irritating to say the least. Spoilers of note.

A really good listen 👍
Got this ‘included’. My first book by this author and was very happy I listened to it.
Good characters with an interesting story, lots of plot twists, a bit of a whodunnit really. Great chemistry with the leads🔥🔥and was surprised that they were meant to be older ie 30s, which was a refreshing change. It made them seem more sensible and level headed and have a normal outlook on life, rather than a bit young and naive. Often for this genre, the female lead is usually very early 20’s and the male is often portrayed as 8-10+ years older, she will often be a bit ditsy and he, a typical Alfa man of the world. It made it seem more real and believable that they were just regular people 👍 It had a bit of everything, ✔️ all 📦.
I will definitely be off to get the next in series. Highly recommend 👍🙂

Pretty decent but…
I enjoyed this romantic suspense there was lots to keep my interest. Couple of things bugged me, firstly there was some repetition in the storyline when the narrator switched between the two points of view which was confusing at ones and the female narrator has a weird inflection in her voice where she stretched some vowel sounds for no particular reason that kind of grated on my nerves but once I was able to ignore that I enjoyed it.

Good story
Was an interesting story line however the girls voice gypsy talks way to Fast and you need to hang on for the ride to keep up to ensure you don't miss anything she says

Narrates by female not great
This is a good start to another good series BUT the female narrator is not the best to listen to as she didn’t do male voices well really gross

Must Miss Narration
The female narrator is spoiling this one - her understanding of punctuation and acting is awful. I'll go back to reading for this series...

awesome find
I haven't listened to this author before and I must say that I'm glad i did.
this was a great story mixed in with enough suspense, hotness, intrigue and strong H and H's.
I love series books where other characters get their own story and we still get to hear the ones we love in the background so this book was perfect for me. Me Barker gets right to the point and moves things al9ng at a nice pace. I began to figure out the mystery but the a little twist pops in to seal the deal. looking forward to no. 2.
Christian Fox, I've listened to before and enjoy his narration but with this character in this book he was perfect. I imagined a quiet, intelligent, intense police enforcer and that's what Christian gave me so thank you for that.
I didn't realize that Muffy and Erin were the same person until I read it in a review. so thankyou anonymous person as I love Erin both her female and male voices. she is one of the few female narrators, I feel can pull both voices off.
so if you enjoy a bit of a detective plot, a hot cop, fiesty heroine, a bit of Romance and steam mixed in with more characters and a dash of family, then this is it.

3.5 star story and narration
Think this is worth use of free credit for genre. enjoyed the bit of mystery/suspense as the context for the relationship development, and enjoy that leads aren't in their 20s - but mature people with careers, who gave to figure out a relationship between independent adults. Male narrator was great, largely nailed it. Female was okay - found she often gets the emotional tone wrong for when narrating male voice, and am just not keen on her style of delivery. She has also gone by name of Erin Mallon, and I avoided all books narrated by her after st 2 experiences, has weird/irritating way of ending sentences, often drawn out and dropping at same time. not quite as bad as earlier books, maybe why she is using different name now - I also speed it up, so might help with that.
