Detective Sergeant Chris Waters got the call at 05.29 that July morning. This is it, said DCI Reeve, you'll be first there, it's all yours, you're the crime scene manager. Suddenly, after months of waiting and wondering, Waters finds himself in at the deep end, and alone at the scene of a puzzling murder. As the investigation proceeds, the detectives at Kings Lake Central find themselves visiting familiar places and talking to some familiar faces, while old enmities reappear in the incident room. Before this is over, Chris Waters will need to make a career-changing decision.

The story opens with the apparently accidental drowning of a sixth form student in the Norfolk countryside. As a matter of routine, or so it seems, the case passes across the desk of Detective Sergeant Smith, recently returned to work after an internal investigation into another case that has led to tensions between officers at Kings Lake police headquarters. As an ex-DCI, Smith could have retired by now, and it is clear that some of his superiors wish that he would do so.

<br />This is how much I have enjoyed this series.
I am usually extremely tough on narrators who mispronounce words, and editors who let them slide. It's not the kindest part of my nature. But when Nikki said that one of her fellow characters was an "aficiando" of history, for me, that malaprop was Nikki's, not Ms. Meire's, and I had a nice chuckle. That's how real the characters came to be for me, in Ms. Meire's versatile voice.
The plots in these books are unique, and involving, but it's my involvement with great characters that keeps me coming back every time.

Another good mystery with Galena & Easter
DI Nikki Galena's father has died, leaving behind a mystery. His last request to her was to "Find Eve."
Nikki has no idea who Eve is.
Yet when she should be dealing with her father's death, and deciding what to do about the mysterious Eve, she has mysteries to deal with at work. A minor-league drug dealer has been fished out of a shaft in the ground at an abandoned World War II airfield, still alive, but only barely. Another drug dealer has simply disappeared, and his sister, with no illusions about her brother but great affection because they survived a difficult childhood together, is determined to find him. The current owner of the airfield is found dead, clearly murdered, but no one knows who wanted him dead.
And Detective Sergeant Joseph Easter's long-estranged daughter Tamsin has come for a visit. They are attempting to mend their relationship.
It seems worth mentioning that all of this turns out to be really small beer beside what they're going to find when they start working these seemingly unrelated cases.
This is, as is typical with Ellis, this is a good, interesting mystery with good, interesting characters. Galena, Easter, and the rest of their team continue to grow and develop, and are well worth spending the time with.
Recommended.

Drugs, Murder, Mystery and History
Book four in the series finds DI Nikki Galena making funeral arrangements for her father, who has long been suffering from dementia, with just one or two lucid moments over the recent past. One was when he told Nikki to "find Eve". Puzzled by the request, Nikki is determined to sort out who the mysterious Eve is. At the office, a drug dealer's death, after falling down a hole at the old RAF air field has the team looking for answers. DI Galena and her team begin to investigate what at first looks like an accident. All of the major players are here, which I love, and they work together seamlessly to solve the case. Joseph's daughter, Tamsin, is visiting him, and the two of them offer to help Nikki by going through her dad's old papers to find out who Eve is. Soon Sgt. Joseph Easter is back off leave, assisting Nikki and the team with the mystery at the airfield. The history of the RAF was intriguing. The tie-in with Nikki's father and his time in the RAF was brilliant. But I definitely did not see any of the airfield killings or the the history of Nikki's father and Eve coming . . . it was like a ride on a curvy high speed roller coaster . . . in the dark . . . I can't wait for the next book . . .

The books in this wonderful detective series by British author Joy Ellis are being released in audio monthly. I have listened to the first 4 in order. Ellis is an excellent story teller. Protagonist Detective Inspector Nikki Galena is a complex and fascinating character. In this case I wish I could award award 4.5 stars. Narrator Henrietta Meire is superb.

Cliche ridden writing
The story was well conceived but it was poorly written. Full of cliches with very derivative characters.

Diabolical narrator
I'm sure the story is good, but the narrator was so bad it was impossible to take the story seriously. The high-speed narration of awful accents, including a comical Scottish accent, was off-putting and I had to give up before the end of chapter two. I'm certain a decent narrator would boost the ratings for this novel.

ABSOLUTELY HORRENDOUS NARRATION!!!
However Henrietta Miere came to be chosen to narrate this book and the others in this series I have no idea. If I was Joy Ellis I would be incandescent with rage at having my characters turned into two dimensional caricatures with a leaning towards Second World War RAF pilot accents in a high, squeaky voice! Sacrilege! I can well see how they turned to a fine narrator like Richard Armitage to read the Jackman and Evans series of Joy’s books.
Henrietta Miere has absolutely no idea of how to do an accent or put across a personality, with the only possible exception being Nikki herself. Like others I generally enjoy the plots of Joy Ellis’ books but I weep for the author having them totally destroyed and rendered unreadable by this ear grinding, squeaky, shrill and utterly appalling narration. Oh, and by he way, did Henrietta Miere have a plane to catch after reading each book? Certainly sounds like it.
I wish Audible could re-run the series choosing another far superior narrator.

The best so far, but very badly read.
This is a great story: the best so far. It would be so much better though with a competent reader. Henrietta Meire is acceptable on straight narrative, but she is hopeless at different regional accents, which consequently jar dreadfully. Richard Armitage who reads the Jackman and Evans series of Joy Ellis is so much better.

Book 4 in the DI Nikki Galena series follows on from the last story. Nikki and her Sargent, Joseph Easter, are faced with mysterious lights on the Fens and a strange morbid discovery in an underground facility that was once a war time air force base.
Alongside this, Easters estranged daughter has come on a visit and becomes embroiled in a dangerous situation.
The narration is very fast. It is slightly better when listened to at 90% speed on my phone, but still needs addressing.

Good story, diabolical narration
If you enjoy this type of police procedural, I suggest you read the book instead of listening to the Audible version. Once again, a decent plot has been ruined by the utterly horrible narration. Possibly the worst accents ever imagined.

Twist after twist after twist!
Joy Ellis never disappoints with her lovingly familiar characters and descriptions of the fens. This story had more twists than usual. The only disappointment I've found in this series is the grating voice of Henrietta Miere. Her accents are appalling and her voice for the beloved Rory the flamboyant pathologist is just a mess. Thank God she didn't narrate the DI Jackman/DS Evans series! Love Joy Ellis.

The best of british
Straight talking, no messing, direct and blunt. As a pommy away from home this series brings me back to grass roots. The team is well bonded and established dynamics....the ending of this book was a twist I did not expect so can't wait to see how that flows on.

So many voices
This story seemed to have so many voices that the narrator was required to perform. Too many for me, it seemed as though several characters had the same voice which I found confusing and off putting. The main characters were thankfully consistent.

An intriguing plot
Overall I enjoyed the book. I formed an idea of who the murderer was fairly early into the story but there were quite few red herrings to keep me guessing.
I found one of the narrator's voices jarring, the 'posh' educated one and its confusing when applied to more than one character.

Sad
Great stories but the reader is so inadequate. She just doesn’t manage the variety of voices very well.

So many twists and turns!
A critically injured drug addict in the ventilation shaft of a disused historic RAF aerodrome is only the first of the grisly discoveries awaiting DI Nikki Galena and her team. As the bodies pile up, it’s hard to know who to trust. There were lots of twists and turns in this gripping police procedural involving a large pool of suspects. I like the ensemble nature of these books, with different members of the team enjoying varying degrees of the spotlight in different books. While Henrietta Meire’s narration still niggles a little in places, she does a great job overall.

Another fine murder mystery.
Some pleasing resolutions and further character developments. I do however find some of the character voices used by the narrator very annoying.
