Publisher's Summary

It’s January of 1704, and Matthew Corbett continues his mission to Italy, accompanied by Hudson Greathouse and former enemy Professor Fell. They seek Brazio Valeriani and information about the mirror created by his father, the sorcerer Ciro. Legend claims the mirror can be used to summon demons from beyond.

But fate has other plans for Matthew as their ship is disabled by a pod of whales, and they seek refuge on a secluded island. The islanders welcome them with a massive feast, but all is not what it seems. As the island pulls them deeper into its influence, the castaways struggle to maintain their grip on reality, even their very identity. Matthew must keep his wits about him and solve the mystery enshrouding the other side of the island, where an active volcano looms and a secretive creature lurks.

The King of Shadows is the eighth installment in best-selling author Robert McCammon’s acclaimed series of historical thrillers featuring Matthew Corbett, a brave “problem-solver” who now faces a challenging foe that threatens to take over his most valuable resource: his own mind.

Love Matthew Corbett

McCammon has an amazing talent for storytelling. His backstory for each character gives such depth and emotion. I will not give any spoilers except that I blew through this in 2 days. Now, the wait for the last one, which will be bittersweet

Worth The Wait

A culmination of things and the story does not disappoint. If you are a fan of the Matthew Corbett Books, this will keep you hooked. After I pre-ordered King of Shadows, I went back and listened to all the previous books for the sake of fresh continuity. Edoardo Ballerini’s voice acting performance is splendid as always, although I detected a bit of a difference in voicing past characters, nevertheless it was marvelous! I wish new books would come out soon but as we fans of Mr. McCammon already know, we should never rush the Master Storyteller when crafting his masterpieces. The wait just enhances the fruition.

not bad but not the best

The story line took two tangents to young Black and Mac. kind of ends abruptly. I love the series but not this one.

Did not disappoint and cannot wait for the next!!

I would love to see this series produced into movies. They would be better than Pirates of the Caribbean.

I’m sorry I spent my credit

I have enjoyed the Matthew Corbett series up until these last two books. I realize the fantastic is part of what is taking place here, but the demons, pedophilia and summoning of dark entities are not things I want or need in my stories. I’ll pass, thanks.

Eduardo Ballerini does such a fantastic job narrating and I so enjoy listening to him, but I have felt sorry for him having to read this last book. I’m afraid I’m signing off on this series and will just have to leave things undone….since this book took such a detour from where and what I was expecting.

Masterpiece

This has been the most enjoyable book ever I’ve had the pleasure of listening too. I am such a huge of the escapades of Matthew Corbett and the history of the additional characters make the experience so much deeper.

Meandering and pointless

I could listen to a Eduardo Ballerini read the Apple Terms and Conditions. Always a stellar performance from him. But McCammon (my favorite author since I was a kid tearing through Swan Song) really missed the mark here. I never quite felt like I was hearing a story—just pieces of anecdotal backstories that didn’t seem to make their way back to the main plot. Overall, good to hear my favorite characters in action again, but boy was this all over the place.

This author/narrator duo is amazing!

Robert R. McCammon is every bit the equal of Stephen King as a writer and storyteller. This particular book is not his best imo, but it’s still worth your time if you’re a fan of the Matthew Corbett series. However, if you’ve not read all the other books in the series do not start here or you will have no idea what’s going on.
As far as the narration, Eduardo Ballerini gives his usual masterful performance, and keeps the same voices for each character throughout all 8 books in the series, which I love and appreciate.

What was the point of this one?

Very disappointed with this, the penultimate book in the series. The writing is good, still evocatively descriptive and well researched but there's just no real story here. It feels like 3 novellas edited into one book and by the end of it nothing has happened to advance the plot to the 'endgame' (except for the final short chapter which could have been added at the beginning of the final book). Two massive back story sections derail the limited main story without adding anything to it. Yes, interesting in their own right but not here. If you skip this one and go from the 7 to 9 just add the words 'they travel to Italy with a short detour on the way' to replace this one and you won't miss anything significant. With so little plot advancement in this one there's a lot to do in the last book to bring the series to a satisfying conclusion.

Corbett is back!

Another excellent tall tale in the Matthew Corbett series - I loved it. Back stories were revealed for several of the villains - Cardinal Black & Mac Decay - along with the story of a shipwreck, a mysterious island which is at first a haven & then becomes something rather more sinister. Wish Hudson Greathouse had been featured a little more but that’s a minor point. Excellent narration again. As another reviewer has said - it’ll be a hard wait for the next book!

Glad he’s back!

So glad to hear this had been released. A bit different to the others in the series as it tapers off to give the story of the the early years of some of the villains eg cardinal black, but thoroughly enjoyable.

Mathew Corbett reigns

Another great MC book. Not exactly what I expected but still brilliant and as always a great narration from Edoardo Ballerini. The story is in 2/3rds. 1 for Mathew, and one each on the life of the 2 villains telling you what led to what they became and why.. Instead of looking for a mirror in Italy they end up on an island which has a terrible influence over it's inhabitants. Robert McCammon has done it again it's going to be a hard wait for the next instalment.
