Story
War has finally come. But it's not a war between good and evil or light and dark - it's a war between Sanctuaries. For too long, the Irish Sanctuary has teetered on the brink of world-ending disaster, and the other Sanctuaries around the world have had enough. Allies turn to enemies, friends turn to foes, and Skulduggery and Valkyrie must team up with the rest of the Dead Men if they're going to have any chance at all of maintaining the balance of power and getting to the root of a vast conspiracy that has been years in the making.

Story
Though I was born with the ability to see the dead, I struggled with it until my brother was killed and his ghost was left behind. Now, I’m determined to figure out who is responsible for his death…the problem is that Detective Maddox Booker, the one working the case, is a grumpy and stubborn man who wants nothing to do with me and definitely doesn’t believe in ghosts. It doesn’t help that I keep finding myself looking ridiculous in front of the detective, thanks to interfering ghosts who enjoy laughing at my expense.

A weekly newspaper dedicated to the weird and the wonderful (but mostly the weird), The Stranger Times is the go-to publication for the unexplained and inexplicable. At least that's their pitch. The reality is rather less auspicious. Their editor is a drunken, foul-tempered and foul-mouthed husk of a man who thinks little of the publication he edits. His staff are a ragtag group of misfits. And as for the assistant editor...well, that job is a revolving door - and it has just revolved to reveal Hannah Willis, who's got problems of her own.

Publisher's Summary
The seventh instalment in the biggest, funniest, most thrilling comedy-horror-adventure series in the universe....
Magic is a disease.
Across the land, normal people are suddenly developing wild and unstable powers. Infected by a rare strain of magic, they are unwittingly endangering their own lives and the lives of the people around them. Terrified and confused, their only hope lies with the Sanctuary. Skulduggery Pleasant and Valkyrie Cain are needed now more than ever.
And then there’s the small matter of Kitana. A normal teenage girl who, along with her normal teenage friends, becomes infected. Becomes powerful. Becomes corrupted. Wielding the magic of gods, they’re set to tear the city apart unless someone stands up against them.
Looks like it’s going to be another one of those days....

Derek Landy is a Genius! (Capital G)
Derek Landy's Skulduggery series is one that I can read over and over and over again! The story line is brilliantly written, and the characters are just so agreeable.
Stephen Hogan's voice is perfect! These set the audio book bar too high, it's almost a shame when I have to listen to anything else. :)

Retains intensity well
This episode reinstates Landy's strong sense of banter and word play, though that gradually gives way to the drama of the tendency toward evil within the various characters - Scottish Jekyll-Hyde in Irish garb. On the negative side, there are numerous plot resolutions of the "out of nowhere in the nick of time" variety. And I do find the combat scenes rather boring, but perhaps necessary. The ending twist is truly something to reflect upon - and I think I saw it coming in book 6.

Way fun series!
I've really enjoyed this series. They're unusual and creative, and the characters are a lot of fun. My only complaint is that the volume fluctuates A LOT. You go from straining to hear the narrator to him shouting in your ear and back again. Whether that's the fault of the narrator or the producers I can't say, but it would be nice if the volume were more consistent.

An interesting villain
This series has a very colorful cast of characters and the villains are no exception. In this particular story we’re introducing to an antagonist with quite a different view of the world and personal beliefs. This story does a great job comparing different ideologies. The climax is definitely a fun one, I highly recommend this novel.
