Story
The story opens with the apparently accidental drowning of a sixth form student in the Norfolk countryside. As a matter of routine, or so it seems, the case passes across the desk of Detective Sergeant Smith, recently returned to work after an internal investigation into another case that has led to tensions between officers at Kings Lake police headquarters. As an ex-DCI, Smith could have retired by now, and it is clear that some of his superiors wish that he would do so.

Both appear miserable and better off without each other-or so decides Tracy, in a snap decision that surprises herself as much as Kelly. Suddenly burdened with a small child, Tracy soon learns her parental inexperience is actually the least of her problems, as much larger ones loom for her and her young charge.

When a young woman is found brutally murdered in her own apartment with an intricate pattern of lines carved into her face, Copenhagen police detectives Jeppe Korner and Anette Werner are assigned to the case. Soon, they establish a link between the victim, Julie Stender, and her landlady, Esther de Laurenti, who’s a bit too fond of drink and the host of raucous dinner parties with her artist friends. Young Tom French was found dead, lying in a marsh on the Norfolk coast, with his head bashed in and his binoculars still around his neck. One of the best birders in England, Tom had put the village of Rushy on the birdwatching map. Everyone liked him. Or did they? George Palmer-Jones, an elderly birdwatcher who decided quietly to look into the brutal crime, discovered mixed feelings aplenty. Still, he remained baffled by a deed that could have been motivated by thwarted love, pure envy, or something else altogether.

Publisher's Summary
"And see if there's any news about the missing girl."
Life, as Smith used to say, is just one thing after another - as one investigation ends, a new one begins. But for reasons unknown to the rest of her team, DCI Cara Freeman will be haunted by the next case for the Kings Lake Central murder squad. They find themselves delving into the seamy side of life in the town, and one of their number will have departed before this new investigation is over. Perhaps Detective Sergeant Chris Waters should have seen it coming, but he has a lot more than work on his mind these days.

Outstanding as always!
The only downside to Peter Grainger’s books is that eventually they end. The story here is difficult and at times so sad, but the honesty in the writing sees it through. It is great that he keeps DC in the story in various ways (the more the better) and as always, the narration was impeccable.

Winning formula with Kings Lake mysteries
I love police procedurals! Over the past thirty plus years I have read many, many books about police investigation squads. After all these years, I have learned how to investigate a crime-scene, the proper and relevant questions to be asked, etc.,etc. I know what I like and how to pick the writers who know their stuff. But the writer also has to know how to.make the reader like and care about these crime scene investigators as cops, and also as people. Peter Grainger is top-notch! With Roxanne, I felt as though I was reading about old friends. Trust me, if you care about quality writing, along with great narration (Gildart Jackson), you will love these books. Enjoy!

Stellar
Gilbert Jackson is a fantastic narrator.
I started late, reading the The DC Smith books, just last year. I devoured them and had to listen to all again because they were just so smart, but I had missed much of that first time round. I loved Lane, and I simply LOVE the King’s Lake series, but now I’ve listened to all 2-X, except #3. What am I to do until we have an addition?

really very good
because of it's close focus on character this novel really does transcend the genre. I don't know where I'd place it exactly among Grainger's work but it has to be near the top. it has such a confident pace with the police work been so cleverly matched to what we find out about motive. Jackson's narration exactly brings out the exactness of the words. Such a fine performance.

Yet another lovely book even though the theme is a hard one to listen to and consider. Once again the sensitivity and humour is outstanding and speaks of someone with a great deal of life experience.
