Fantastic to listen while working
I emphatically rate this as five stars and would recommend it to any audience of YA reading level or above who is interested in fantasy.
I read this book by listening to an audio version of it. This means the characters and the plotline must be exceptionally strong or I find myself distracted. Likewise a strong narrator is needed to read clearly. The only surprise I had from it being an audio book was that suddenly music erupted, I was not expecting it and found it startling, but I grew to like it.
The plotline is steady and the dialog and actions believable. There is a lot of foreshadowing, but this helps us to adjust to and believe in the fantasy. There is no unnecessary or stilted dialog, instead it helps us to really understand the characters.
My favorite aspect of the story is the magical characters. First, some of these creatures who removed themselves from mankind are distrustful and angry at the humans. But moreover, it is the dragon personalities that I enjoy. So often in fantasy novels the dragons are portrayed as evil to be slayed or wise beyond years. In this story, the length of years leads to wisdom, and their sense of honor is there as we might expect, but there is also hot-headed rebellion and disgruntlement. The dragons are not all-knowing, nor the other magical creatures, and even they make errors or can be tricked. This lends a level of credibility not often felt with YA fantasy.

Excellent YA Epic Fantasy with Satisfying End
Disclaimer: I received a free copy of the audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
This is a clean epic fantasy that can be safely given to anyone 10 and up. There is danger and even death along the way.
What's more is that this volume is a complete adventure unto itself with an epic ending. You may enjoy this book without worrying it will feel like Book 1 of 4. However if you're anything like me you will want to continue to explore this work and the characters that inhabit it in further adventures.
Speaking of characters, along the way you have a fantastic mix of characters: a surprisingly dangerous princess, a ranger with a dark and mysterious past, dragons (!!), dryads, wizards, prophecies, royalty and so much more. I was surprised how much was crammed into this volume without it feeling overwhelming or dense. The characters come to life - aided by the excellent narrator Benjamin Fife who provides voices to help distinguish everyone. Time is taken to develop characters and relationships without sacrificing getting to explore this fantastic world. Then by the end the entire world has been changed.
If you are looking for adventure, fully realized characters and writing that puts this volume in the rarified strata of Lloyd Alexander's Prydain Chronicles or Sanderson's fantasy epics then look no further.

Fun, clean fantasy
I really enjoyed this book. The world was interesting, the characters were likable, and the plot was interesting. It reminded me of the LOTR or Brandon Sanderson without quite as much magic building. There was a plot twist at the end that I wasn't expecting. There was a drawn out battle scene towards the end that seemed to drag, and there were a few plot points that seemed to be resolved too easily, but overall I enjoyed the story. There was a good conclusion to the story, and while I want to read or listen to the next book I'm not wondering what happens since the plot was resolved.
The narrator was excellent, all the characters had distinct voices, and he really made it an enjoyable listen, There were a few songs maybe 1/3 of the way through the book, where a woman was singing and I was surprised when they actually had a woman sing the part.
The book was clean - there was no innuendo, no language, no "adult" scenes, which I really appreciate. With the battles I would expect it to be rated PG or PG13 if it were a movie.

A wonderful surprise
After several dud audiobooks, this was a very nice surprise. The book is well written, the world well thought out, and the characters on the quest likable and realistic. Even better, the narrator of the audiobook really added to the experience. He had the perfect blend of changing voices for different people just enough that it flowed naturally without feeling like he was trying too hard.
Now, having listened, I'm not going to know how to spell anyone's names, so bear with me. We have a princess who has secretly been training as a squire, a squire who just might be a descendant of an ancient king, a young dragon boy (who didn't know he was a dragon, an enchantress (and her sisters), and Brandt, a formidable warrior who simply wanted to live a quiet life with his wife and children. Together, they face heartbreak, treacherous journeys ad attacks by dark warriors, and in the process they begin to learn who they really are and what they are capable of.
The story is well told, and it was easy to get lost in. The only issue I had is the head hopping. The book isn't written in omniscient point of view, but whenever the author wishes to get a different perspective, she jumps to a new point of view without scene or chapter breaks. At first it was jarring because I was always having to shift around. It also made it so that I didn't connect deeply with any one character. There are lots of points of view, and we get a general camera shot from all of them. The book would be an excellent movie script and a wonderful movie. There were times that I wished to feel more connected to the characters as a reader though.
I give this a solid 4 rating for the book and a 4.5 for the narration.
1-5 scale and what it means:
1: I couldn’t even finish it / just plain bad
2: I hope I didn’t pay for this / disappointing
3: I didn’t hate it, but it was still missing something / forgettable but inoffensive
3.5: On the line between good and ok / like, not love
4: Solid mind candy / worth reading
4.5: So very close to perfection! / must read
5: I could not put it down and I’m still thinking about it! / a true treasure

Incredible New Series
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! It wasn't a story that was so fast paced that it was impossible to put down, yet I still didn't want to. I would say in terms of pace it's similar to Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter --- in term of story style/content it reminded me again Lord of the Rings, the Beyonders and Dragon Watch. This was a book that I had to pay closer attention to because it hops around between some of the characters and locations so there were a few time that I had to go back a few minutes because I missed something... happened only when I was really multi tasking. I loved her take on the dragons and hope to see more of them in the next book. It didn't leave off on a cliffhanger but I am still eagerly awaiting the next book. The narrator did a fantastic job and it even has a few times where he got some back up help in the singing which was fun. Parents: other then some battle violence thoughout the story this is a clean read and I would place it for 3rd-4th graders and up, adult will definitely enjoy this too.

Draws you in from the very beginning!
I was wonderfully surprised with this book! the storyline was very enticing, and the characters were easy to like and identify with. the author does a wonderful job at painting a picture of the realm. the storyline weaved intricacies that I did not expect, with a detail that allowed your imagination to go wild!
The narrator of this book was a notch above! he did a wonderful job at translating this wonderful work. the characters were very definable, and he put a lot of emotion into his narration.
if you are in the game for an old school style adventure, with heroes and villains, kingdoms and magic, then this book is for you!

A lovely story; fantastic narration
It is a well-established fact that I believe Prydain is one of the greatest and most underrated fantasy sagas for children of all ages. I have never read anything quite like it. Until this book. It has serious Prydain vibes, while being an entirely original story set in a completely different land. The storytelling is simply lovely. There is a princess who dreams of a life of adventure while secretly training as a squire. Her father, the king, wishes not to be tasked with leading a nation but to return to his life on a farm where his neighbors only view him as a peer. The queen has her own secret, hidden so that her daughter might lead a normal life. An orphan with an unknown past seeks to complete his training as a squire and become a knight. A young boy just wants to be loved and doesn't understand why others keep turning him away (there is a reason AND he does find people who accept him). A warrior with the bearing of a king has wished only for peace and a simple life. All of these and more are brought together when war is threatened. Also, there are dragons and they are absolutely wonderful. And so much more. The adventures were interesting and unique and the story resolves in ways you might see foreshadowed are still delightful. And there is room for so much more to come, which is wonderful since there are 3 more books in the series.
I received a free copy of this book from the narrator, who, as always, did a fabulous job differentiating between numerous voices. He also involved his family in the music which was delightful. I have reviewed it freely, and I highly recommend this book.

Adventure +Dragons +Music +Battle= Epic Audiobook!
I'm not sure why I put off starting this book for so long, but in a way, I'm glad I waited till I was ready for the epic adventure that awaited me. Truly, this is the first story ever that makes me compare it to the Chronicles of Narnia, and with that being the series that introduced me to reading when I was a kid, I don't say that lightly. I loved all the threads and plot twists that the author wove together. I loved the characters' growth throughout their quest. I loved getting to explore all the different areas of the kingdom of Aom-igh as Kamarie, Oraeyn, Yole, Brant, and Dylanna went on their mission(s). It's really, really good, and it's perfect for any lover of Epic Fantasy.
Of course, I'm pretty sure my enjoyment of this epic adventure wouldn't have been the same were it not for its narrator, Benjamin Fife. He definitely took this book to the next level and nailed every single one of the characters' voices (be them young or old, male and female), as well as their nuances (whether angry, tired, scared, compassionate and everything in between) his performance was off the charts! Also, there are dragons, a gryphon, and a pegasus in this book, and his voices for each of these creatures are pure gold! I loved that he didn't shy away from the shouts (as some narrators tend to make them more of a hoarse whisper), as well as giving us the full effect of two people speaking at the same time (thanks to editing) and not just trying to mix and say it in just one voice (as I've heard other narrators do). Oh, and there's music! And singing! I was so not expecting it, but I'm pretty sure they made for my favorite parts. :)
Overall, a phenomenal audiobook experience, perfect for fans of Epic Fantasy, dragons, quests, battles, kingdoms at peril, and the fulfillment of ancient prophecies. I seriously can't wait to dive into the next one in this series! ~ 5 stars!

An impressive amount of world and character building goes on in this. It’s classic fantasy but a brilliant story none the less. Really recommend this and the author is fantastic

Great fantasy "fellowship" style book
A well-written fantasy book with a reasonable bit of background and worldbuilding, making for a nicely paced adventure, the author manages to lay out a world that has magic, fantastic beasts and a lot of interesting characters.
Well written with humour and sadness in equal parts, while having enough character development to avoid too simple and one-dimensional "heroes".
Narration is excellent by Benjamin Fife, who is one of my favourite narrators, although personally, the music and songs(2-3 of them over the book, not too excessive) could be skipped.
