Story
Millions of threads so thin as to be invisible, so vaporous as to be ductile, drift through the classroom, emitting a chill and leaving a sense of unease. Hidden deep in their cloaks, the Blue Lights analyze the odors that cling to the individual cells of every child, from the top of each little head to the bottom of their ticklish feet and every dark secret place in between, from their gathering brains to their blood-soaked spleens. One girl feels dizzy; one boy throws up.

A box full of newspaper clippings, photographs, and tiny bones found under a dying woman’s bed leads to the discovery of the existence of an unusual group of children. Kept apart, these children grew up believing their fathers were the wealthy mortal men who had wed their pregnant mothers. One of these children was named Crystal; she was raised by a scientist who was obsessed with the secret of winged flight. Her mother died during one of his tests, and Crystal was sent to a foster home.

Life played its horrible games with the girl. As she grew up she devised clever places to hide - inside and outside of her mind. She was tricked by her own illusions; she was caught in traps of her own creation. It began with a kidnapping, a locked room, and the broken doll that was more than a plaything…and always, in the shadows, the dangerous painting from her past waited, threatening to expose her.

Story
I am going to die here. My name is Mindy Mason; I’m a student from the University. I volunteered for one experiment; it was to be for one day only. I want to go home now. I hear cries, screams, and shrieks in the night. Some of the voices sound as if they are coming from the pillow under my head, others as if from a radio behind a door in a far room, and yet others come from my dreams, thus layering my terror. I know Wendy has a knife; perhaps she has killed again. How can I stop her?

One by one, cities have been falling to a terrorist attack. No one can stop the terrorists or figure out where the next attack will take place. All that is known is when the attacks start, the strange gas the terrorists use turns the moon a blood red, and black shadows of men and women are seen, slinking among the buildings. Yet, somehow, not a single survivor has managed to provide a solid description of the people attacking their towns. Most contribute this to the mysterious gas that seems to put the residence into a temporary psychotic state, but what if it’s something more than that?

In 1972, the Red Bozos were the friendliest faces in frenetic Midlands Amusement Park. Flash forward four and a half decades: Midlands is a ghost park. Closed long ago and nearly forgotten, even by the locals, it sits shrouded in undergrowth and hill-topping forest surrounded by upscale new homes. Ringed with a decaying fence, hidden from sight, it presents a huge temptation to a group of bored, thrill-seeking youths who are about to learn that terror is, in fact, immortal.

Publisher's Summary
Evil rules the mean streets in many guises, waiting in the shadows along the crumbled edges of the mega-cities, where murder is the only crime that leaves a trace for lesser violent acts are simply not reported.
Children, the elderly, the slightly and severely damaged make up the homeless. The weak and the helpless are deemed beyond salvation and beneath contempt by all but the strongest and the cruelest who see them as a source of sustenance.

Another Great Dona Short
I've listened to a few audio shorts from Ms. Fox. Always a good listen!! I love that her stories are just right for my commute. In this one we are learning about the homeless who are struggling to stay alive. But their struggles are hard and can be deadly. The narration was very good. Worked very well for this story. Thank you for the opportunity to listen.

Quicksilver
The author, Dona Fox, has a way with taking a fairly mundane situation and turning it into a thing of horror. After listening to some of her other works, I began to realize that horror is all around us in our everyday lives.
In this short story, she explores the horrors of life on the streets, with thugs, thieves, eating from dumpsters and just trying to survive. The descriptions were graphic and horrific, but also heartbreaking. If you are looking for supernatural horror, this isn't it. But, if you are looking for a quick, well-written story, give it a try.
The narrator does a pretty good job, but at times it was hard to understand or hear him very well. I had to rewind and listen again to see what he had actually said. All in all, a good way to spend 24 minutes of listening.

Realistic Horror
Kiss of Quicksilver is a realistic, not supernatural, horror story. It is very well written, very gritty. This one is worthy of literary awards. Also, Dona Fox has a knack for picking the perfect narrator to deliver each story.

Brutal, heart wrenching and unforgetable
The story starts of with the main characters having a very bad day and the days that follow just gets worse from that point on. It's said that true horror will bring out almost a physical response in the reader and this story certainly fits that description. I went from being horrified, to feeling sick to my stomach to then becoming overwhelmed with a sense of dread. I would actually go so far to say this steps into the realm of extreme horror. Which, again, is great if you are into true horror. The author doesn't flinch or pull back for a second, staring the darkness straight in the eye and forging ahead without even the slightest attempt to soften the edges. The author was fearless, leaving the reader to experience the fear instead. An excellent example of true, raw horror. If you like it harsh, this is it. No room for whimpy readers here.
I will say one thing. I no longer think bad people die and go to Hell. I think they die and return as children in a Dona Fox story. Oh my gosh! All I can say is I hope this is not a reflection of her childhood, because holy freakin' cow!

Rat For Dinner Anyone
"Well worth reading and highly recommended., Dona Fox is an amazing writer, this is the second or third short story I have read/listened to by Dona, and they have all been good. Freddy Moyano was okay as the narrator, a little different voice, but I guess it kind of fits the story. I received this audiobook code in a giveaway and this is my voluntary unbiased review.

Rough Narration
The writing was really good and descriptive. I didnt think it was too scary for a short horror, although there were some really grisly descriptions that I could definitely picture in my mind. This author really knows how to deliver a captivating snippet of darkness.
My overall biggest complaint is the narration. I think the narrator was trying to do stuff to make it seem more scary but in all actuality it just made some parts highly distorted and for a few few moments indecipherable. It was relatively frustrating and took away from this short story.
I received a review copy at my request and have voluntarily left this unbiased review.

Good story!
I didn’t find this story as haunting as some of Dona’s other releases, so felt a little disappointed, but it’s still a good story and worth a read!
I think my biggest issue was not gelling with the narrator; he reads it perfectly well, but not ‘getting’ a narrator is hard with a short story as you don’t get enough time to find their rhythm.
I wouldn’t hesitate to listen to other Dona books though and will continue to look out for her! :)
This is an honest opinion of a free review copy.
