A third son to an earl, Adam Gillensford knows his only hope of an inheritance is through his great uncle. But when the Will is read, Adam learns most of the wealth has been left to a complete stranger, and a seamstress at that. If he hopes to salvage any kind of funds for himself, he has two choices: adhere to his late uncle’s wishes and assist the new heiress in finding her way, or sabotage her so the courts will find her unfit to inherit. Deciding his course would be easier if the heiress wasn’t so enchanting.

Great novel. Terrible narrator.
Whoever the narrator was is horrid. He ends nearly ever sentence with an upper tone as if asking a question. It drove me nuts. His intonations repeated for almost every sentence.

Fun rompy mystery, slow-burn romance
Despite the dark context of saving women and children from forced prositution, I found the mystery and external threat fun and a little different. In contrast to Book 2, but more like to Book 1, the romance didn't feel like the dominant narrative which was fine--but something listeners should be ready for when they start.
The romance was sweet and a slow, slow burn. They are essentially interested and wanting to marry from the very start but circumstances keep them apart until the very end. Edmund is very stayed and careful, Isabella is sweet-tempered and unsure... which meant their blossoming love is very, VERY chaste. I have no issues with this (though steamy kissing at the very least is always appreciated), but there is virtually no tension as a result so just be mentally prepared for this. In other words, this is squeaky clean historical romance. Squeaky, G-rated, cleanliness. But it's well written, and there are some nice period details that build the world. Other, even minor, characters were vibrant and entertaining.
I really enjoyed Alex Wyndham's vocal choices for the Edmunda and Isabella, as they matched the personalities very well. Ancillary characters like Eugenia's hoyden-ness and Heath's reformed rake-ness are nicely brought to life again, as in previous installments.
These aren't earth shattering stories, but are a fun way to pass a few hours and worth listening to for Wyndham's unparalleled talent as a narrator. I will 100% continue with the series, even if it isn't the emotionally turbulent, steamy, angsty, densely historical HR I prefer. Worth a credit!

Three and a half stars! 3½
The third instalment of this series is slightly better than the first book, but only because we know more of the characters, not because of the storyline, which is very haphazard and hit and miss!
Thus far, Dark Knight, book 2, is the superior story, however book four sounds intriguing!
Alex Wyndham is, as always, wonderful as a narrator.
