Publisher's Summary

The last war was fought with weapons unimaginable....

A war was fought. Humanity lost.

Time for a rematch.

The world fell, the invaders won, and demons now ruled what had once been man's domain. The great works of a once powerful civilization lie in ruins, its people having forgotten the wonders of their forefathers as they now live in the yoke. Not everyone is willing to go quietly into the endless night, however, and for every inch of ground they'd won, they had paid in blood and bone. At the end of it all, however, the demons stood victorious and all that was left to accomplish was the final cleanup of the human pests that infested occasional parts of the conquered world.

In one nearly uninhabitable part of that world, a very young such pest has come of age and, without understanding what it means, she walks in the shadow of destiny.

The demons have a lesson to learn, one last to be taught to them by humans, before they can call this world truly their own.

A cleansing fire can start from the smallest of sparks...and it is always darkest just before the dawn.

Mix of SciFi and Fantasy in a great new world

Evan is one of my favorite builders of worlds and here, he steps into new grounds. The setting is a wasted Earth that you are unsure if it takes place in a far off future or a very distant past. Demons have wiped out most of humanity and what is left is a shadow of what used to be.

The demons are inter dimensional intruders and I take it, so are angels, the world is covered with relics of heights that man rose and the tools left behind. The main character is a girl named Ella, who grew up in hiding in the middle of this wasteland and bad things happen as things do and she grows up.

Go ahead and buy it, you won't be disappointed.

Decidedly underwhelming

well the book does start slow, it promises an intriguing adventure written in a creative and intelligent matter and making the very best use of words and sentences to communicate. it's suggests from the start that the character development, interaction, and exploration, will be above par and at the characters will be relatable and easy to connect with. additionally plot itself while not utterly unique, suggests that it will be woven together in a nevertheless entertaining fashion. sadly, this tail falls well beneath these expectations that it's early pages set.

I found the story to be on a sliding Hill downward the continuously degraded itself both in style, character development, and plot execution. it was as if the author ran out of steam or needed to rush the book in order to get it published and toward the halfway point and beyond it's simply lacked the field of being a polished and finished product. but the greatest of all the books catastrophes is the main character from the second half until the end. she is petulant, utterly irritating, and blurts out the most ridiculous statements that not even a 2 year old would be guilty of saying in the circumstances in which she finds herself. it is rare that I hope for the death of the main character, and yet I find that such hope needs to be found within me for this one

Interesting plot, cool execution

This was a pretty interesting book. Nice introduction to characters, slow revelation of plot. Recommend for a change of pace in the fantasy genre that are available free with audible plus.

Performance is too breathy and angst-ridden

I'm only about 7% into the book, but I felt I had to write a performance review before I stopped listening to it. I've been an Evan Currie fan for a long time and plan on continuing to read the Kindle version, but the narrator is really irritating me. Most of her sentences have the same tone and pace, with an occasional almost choked-off, sob-like quality. I prefer actors who can emote within the context of the story without distracting from the story; James Marsters, Lorelei King, Marguerite Gavin, Bronson Pinchot are just four of my favorites. Unfortunately, Ms Campbell's narration is just a little to dull and repetitive for my tastes. I'd recommend just buying the ebook, not the audiobook.

Surprisingly enthralling

I have never read anything by Evan Currie before. I was between books and looking for something new. Knighthood caught my eye and I figured I'd give it a shot. I'm very glad I did. Definitely worth the credit. Great world building, but not at the expense of character development.

A fun read.

A good first book of a series that leaves you wanting more. A believable heroine in a story that might or might not be considered fantasy.

Tiresome

A few creative twists, which I always appreciate! But mostly it was tedious. I felt like I was struggling thru battle after battle after battle without advancing thru a plot

Great (audio) book.

After "Heirs of Empire" I wasn't sure if I should read this book, since I was afraid that this will be very similar to mentioned above (with I wasn't found). Turns out to be very good. Nice characters with very interesting story. I liked the concept very much, nice ideas! I just can't wait for the next one. Well done! In mine opinion this book if way better than "Heirs of Empire" I had a feeling that this is how "heirs... " should look like. It takes 1 to 2 hours for this book to become very interesting and after that... Well grab one for yourself and have fun!

My favourite book so far

I was totally addicted to this well written, immersive story, spending every spare minute listening. The characters were so well described, I felt like I knew them

I also loved this narrator, who not only brought the story to life, but also each character

I was a little disappointed when it ended, but it didn’t leave the story on a huge cliffhanger, and for that I’m thankful. There are 2 more books in the series, I hope they’re as good

Excellent performance

Excellent performance all to often a good story is made unbearable by a poor narator. This was a good story made better by Ms Campbell.

A run of the mill story, told painfully boringly

After 4 hours I gave up as there is nothing interesting, novel or existing here. So perhaps the book gets better later on, I honestly have no clue, but what I listened to this far killed of my motivation and stamina to even attempt listening any longer.

Unless you enjoy another "Hero loses parents to evil monsters, swears revenge, fails, is rescued be future mentor and then begins journey towards becoming a run of the mill hero" give this one a skip. Sadly the aforementioned standard fantasy plot is on-top of being utterly predictable, so boringly presented that it feels like a total drag. The characters are one dimensional, the monster/demons lack any substance and feel like caricatures.

Perhaps suitable to teen readers making their first foray into fantasy literature, though I doubt they have the patience either.

Overall quite good.

The narrator has an unfortunate way of adding feeling to almost every sentence. Where it’s required she does so admirably, but where it’s not, I find it grating.
The story is quite good if a little preachy at times.
One of the better listens on the plus catalogue.

slow start but well worth persisting

It certainly starts out slow and for me, it took awhile before i liked the main characters but once you get into it, i thought it's really quite an engaging story and i came to really like the MC's. I'm about to start the next audiobook so i recommend you give it a chance.

having said that, the audio quality of the recording is one of the poorest I've heard from Audible, the narrator is fine once you get used to the accents but it sounds like it was recorded on a cassette tape. I hope the second book fixes the issue.
