Publisher's Summary

When a corpse found floating face-down in Vilnoc harbor is not quite as dead as it seems, Temple sorcerer Penric and his chaos demon Desdemona are drawn into the uncanny investigation. Pen’s keen questions will take him across the city of Vilnoc, and into far more profound mysteries, as his search for truths interlaces with tragedy.

ghostbusters

I do wish we could get longer stories from the author but these smaller slices into Penric's life are satisfying.

Back to the beginning

I get people talking about how sad this story is, and there is definitely the moment when you realize what is happening, but overall it’s a beautiful story — one that is a call back to the beginning, all the way to the first moments of The Curse of Chalion.

I hope this isn’t the last Pen & Dez story, but if it is, coming full circle like this is a good way to go.

Fantastic, but sad

I love her books, but COVID is getting everyone down. This book is sooo sad. Still loved it, but damn. Heavy stuff.

My favorite author

Very successfully uses the fantasy element to leverage examination of the human character. Characters I enjoy meeting.

I love Penric and Desdemona.

It's no surprise that I love Penric and Desdemona. I say that in every one of my reviews. But hear me out, they really are an awesome pair. They've made their peace with each other, sharing the same body and all. Penric with Desdemona help, fulfills his task learning how to be a priest of the Bastard God of Chaos... You'll find that they're called apon to sort out some godly duty! Which often involves solving a murder...
And yes this is the best book evarrr, although I admit the best Penric and Desdemona book is always the one I've just finished listening to. 😆 but so true! And, Knot of Shadows is no exception! Penric and Desdemona become involved when a corpse continues to move around becoming belligerent! And it's up to Penric and Desdemona to find out what is going on, and hopefully ease the soul that's trapped within!!!

Delightful mystery

As a medical professional, I really appreciate the angst Penric expresses about medical research. The concept building about sorcery is good food for thought.

Wonderfully human and loving characters

It's always a great pleasure to listen to her stories. Lovely human and natural characters not mere tropes and stereotypes. Heartfelt emotions that made me tear up. All in a wonderfully unique world.
Thanks

Sad but sublime

Author never disappoints with this series. Not as long as the previous novel, alas, but brevity surely lends to consistently entertaining and thoughtful outings each time. Love this writer, and love the 5 god books the most.
