Story
The Korean Peninsula today is divided into two, but there was a time when this peninsula was divided into many states. Over the course of time, and besieged by expansive transient dynasties outside of this modest piece of land, many clans and tribes overran their lands. Of all those malicious and greedy potential overlords, none managed to prevail.

Story
There is an ancient Chinese proverb that states, "Two tigers cannot share the same mountain." However, in East Asia, there are three tigers on that mountain: China, Japan, and Korea, and they have a long history of turmoil and tension with each other. In his latest entertaining and thought-provoking narrative travelogue, Michael Booth sets out to discover how deep, really, the enmity is between these three "tiger" nations and what prevents them from making peace.

Story
Have you ever encountered a noblewoman who was so beautiful that every time she walked by a body of water, the divine being who lived there kidnapped her? Or a mole who wanted to marry his beloved daughter to the wind? You will get to meet both of them in this audiobook. Changes in religious belief across the centuries came to have an important impact on Korean mythology. The earliest religion was a form of shamanism, and the belief in gods and spirits who inhabit animals and mountains come to the fore in several of these tales.

Story
Korea was one of the last countries in Asia to be visited by Westerners, and its borders have remained largely unchanged since it was unified in the seventh century. Though it is one of the world's oldest and most ethnically homogeneous states, Korea was not born in a vacuum. Geographically isolated, the country was heavily influenced by powerful China and was often used as a bridge to the mainland by Japan. Calling themselves as "a shrimp among whales", Koreans borrowed elements of government, culture, and religion, all the while fiercely fighting to maintain independence.

A New York Times Top 10 Book of the Year and National Book Award finalist, Pachinko is an "extraordinary epic" of four generations of a poor Korean immigrant family as they fight to control their destiny in 20th-century Japan (San Francisco Chronicle). In the early 1900s, teenaged Sunja, the adored daughter of a crippled fisherman, falls for a wealthy stranger at the seashore near her home in Korea. Language defines us as a species, placing humans head and shoulders above even the most proficient animal communicators. But it also beguiles us with its endless mysteries, allowing us to ponder why different languages emerged, why there isn't simply a single language, how languages change over time and whether that's good or bad, and how languages die out and become extinct.

Story
Neil Gaiman has long been inspired by ancient mythology in creating the fantastical realms of his fiction. Now he turns his attention back to the source, presenting a bravura rendition of the great northern tales. In Norse Mythology, Gaiman fashions primeval stories into a novelistic arc that begins with the genesis of the legendary nine worlds; delves into the exploits of the deities, dwarves, and giants; and culminates in Ragnarok, the twilight of the gods and the rebirth of a new time and people.

Story
Long overshadowed by Japan and China, South Korea is a small country that happens to be one of the great national success stories of the postwar period. From a failed state with no democratic tradition, ruined and partitioned by war, and sapped by a half-century of colonial rule, South Korea transformed itself in just 50 years into an economic powerhouse and a democracy that serves as a model for other countries. With no natural resources and a tradition of authoritarian rule, Korea managed to accomplish a second Asian miracle.

Interesting But Read Too Quickly
I have long wanted to learn Korean mythology and this certainly doesn't disappoint there, it truly is a fascinating culture. I don't feel like the narrator made it as interesting as it could and should have been, it felt like he was rushing through it until it was almost at the end but even then it was still too fast for my tastes. Still, I very much appreciate the glimpse into such an interesting culture. I just wish there had been some more information.

Not exactly what I was looking for.
I guess you could say this book was informative, but not exactly what I was looking for. I was hoping it would be the actual stories of myth, instead, it was two or three sentences about various myth. Not even a full synopsis. More like a lecture from a bored professor who forgot to show up to class until the last day of the semester and tried to cover all subjects in one sitting.

It is the story of our flawed human selves, our vast human longings, our capacity for love, cruelty, error and redemption. "Each life contains as much meaning as all of history," Chung writes in Forgotten Country.

Disappointing
I don't expect a narrator is necessarily be a native speaker of the subject they speak on, but this was unlistenable. It's bad when one can't sit through less than 2 hours. Much of the pieces are directly lifted from the anecdotes of actual Korean and korean American writers with no mention of the source. Two stars only because the lack of availability of the topic.

Oh my goodness!!
If you know a bit of Korean language, do yourself a favour and purchase something else. Trying to figure out what the names were REALLY in Korean took more energy than actually enjoying the content. And one would think that everyone knows how to pronounce UNESCO.
At times, I had the impression I was listening to a Google bot.
Thid is such a shame because the content itself is interesting enough that I probably will read it. But there's no way I'm going to survive another listening session.
