Story
The secretive Mysteries conducted at Eleusis in Greece for nearly two millennia have long puzzled scholars with strange accounts of initiates experiencing otherworldly journeys. In this groundbreaking work, three experts - a mycologist, a chemist, and a historian - argue persuasively that the sacred potion given to participants in the course of the ritual contained a psychoactive entheogen. The authors then expand the discussion to show that natural psychedelic agents have been used in spiritual rituals across history and cultures.

From 1990 to 1995 Dr. Rick Strassman conducted U.S. Government-approved and funded clinical research at the University of New Mexico in which he injected 60 volunteers with DMT, one of the most powerful psychedelics known. His detailed account of those sessions is an extraordinarily riveting inquiry into the nature of the human mind and the therapeutic potential of psychedelics. DMT, a plant-derived chemical found in the psychedelic Amazon brew, ayahuasca, is also manufactured by the human brain. In Strassman's volunteers, it consistently produced near-death and mystical experiences.

Story
In every mystical wisdom tradition, nonordinary states of consciousness have served as essential tools for discovering why we are here and how we can live richer, more meaningful lives. For over 40 years, Stanislav Grof has tested and brought these methods into the field of modern psychology. Are emotional states and behavioral patterns explained solely by brain chemistry and life experience - or could they be expressions of far vaster universal energies? Which specific mind states most powerfully accelerate integration and healing of the self? And how do you access these states? In The Transpersonal Vision, Grof answers these questions - and raises many others - in a stunning summation of his groundbreaking life's work. You will learn about transpersonal psychology's daring forays into the worlds of the shaman and the mystic; how your perinatal (birth and prebirth) experience profoundly affect you even today; what past-life, near-death, and out-of-body phenomena teach us about our life purpose; and much more.

Publisher's Summary
A professor of religious studies meticulously documents his insights from 73 high-dose LSD sessions conducted over the course of 20 years.
- Chronicles, with unprecedented rigor, the author’s systematic journey into a unified field of consciousness that underlies all physical existence
- Makes a powerful case for the value of psychedelically induced spiritual experience and discusses the challenge of integrating these experiences into everyday life
- Shows how psychedelic experience can take you beyond self-transformation into collective transformation and help birth the future of humanity
On November 24, 1979, Christopher M. Bache took the first step on what would become a life-changing journey. Drawing from his training as a philosopher of religion, Bache set out to explore his mind and the mind of the universe as deeply and systematically as possible - with the help of the psychedelic drug LSD. Following protocols established by Stanislav Grof, Bache’s 73 high-dose LSD sessions over the course of 20 years drew him into a deepening communion with cosmic consciousness.
Journey alongside Professor Bache as he touches the living intelligence of our universe - an intelligence that both embraced and crushed him - and demonstrates how direct experience of the divine can change your perspective on core issues in philosophy and religion. Chronicling his 73 sessions, the author reveals the spiral of death and rebirth that took him through the collective unconscious into the creative intelligence of the universe. Making a powerful case for the value of psychedelically induced spiritual experience, Bache shares his immersion in the fierce love and creative intent of the unified field of consciousness that underlies all physical existence. He describes the incalculable value of embracing the pain and suffering he encountered in his sessions and the challenges he faced integrating his experiences into his everyday life. His journey documents a shift from individual consciousness to collective consciousness, from archetypal reality to Divine Oneness and the Diamond Luminosity that lies outside cyclic existence.
Pushing the boundaries of theory and practice, the author shows how psychedelic experience can take you beyond self-transformation into collective transformation, beyond the present into the future, revealing spirit and matter in perfect balance.
Critic Reviews
“Once or twice in a century a book appears that has the explosive force of a supernova, breaking through the limitations of religion, science, and culture. This is such a book - a gripping account of an utterly unique and extraordinary hero’s journey that opens our minds and hearts to a new vision of our universe and ourselves. A deeply moving template of our evolutionary journey.” (Anne Baring, PhD, author of The Dream of the Cosmos)
“Chris Bache demonstrated tremendous courage to embark on the 73 highdose LSD sessions that form the core of this book. The insights and lessons he brought back are fascinating and profoundly relevant as we seek to answer fundamental questions of the meaning and purpose of our own lives. LSD and the Mind of the Universe: Diamonds from Heaven is a diamond from Chris!” (Rick Doblin, PhD, founder and executive director of the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychede)
“Chris Bache is an intrepid psychonaut whose 20-year odyssey has yielded an extraordinary harvest of luminous insights into the deeper structure of reality and the underlying dynamics of human existence. Prepare to be amazed, energized, purged, shattered, illuminated, and reborn by penetrating to the heart of this stunning revelation for our times.” (David Lorimer, program director at the Scientific and Medical Network)

Profound! Stands Among the Best of All of Time
What I thought would be a strange tale about LSD sessions turned into something much deeper and more profound. Mr Bache has gone to places in the mind and soul of humanity that very, very few people over the ages have gone (or would have the courage to experience).
What follows is an unfolding of personal, transpersonal and spiritual evolution/insight that would more likely occur over hundreds or even thousands of lifetimes, condensed into 73 LSD sessions over 20 years.
I found his work to be intense, stretching the mind as he recounts his experiences, especially when you really consider what he is describing.
Having past experience with psychedelics myself and deep interest in altered or non ordinary states I was drawn to this book based on the title and description alone but you do not necessarily need to be interested in LSD or altered states to read this book.
This book unveils the rich landscape inside all of us on the deepest levels and the forces that shape us.
I highly recommend this book to everyone interested in the deeper levels of the human psyche and the soul and our place in the cosmic evolution.
Mr. Bache should be commended for his work and more attention given to this powerful book.

Too Spiritual/Religiously Oriented
I wanted a good LSD book. And I wanted a book specifically that talks about the nature of reality and a philosophical discussion about consciousness. I listened to 1/3rd of this book and from that I could establish this book was very much working on the assumption that gods, spirituality, and reincarnation are real. I don't hold those belief systems and I wanted a more scientific book. This book will appeal to a lot of people I'm sure. I do think LSD has a lot of power to help the human race, but this just wasn't what I was hoping for when purchasing it. There was a Ted Talk years ago called "Do We See Reality As It Is?" And incorporating LSD into a discussion like that was the type of book I was hoping for. If you're an atheist or agnostic this book is going to leave you cringing hard at the level of assumptions being made based on their own experiences. Experiences can feel meaningful and I have no doubt if LSD existed 2,000 years ago it would have spawned a whole series of religions with spiritual/reincarnation beliefs. But what does our mind making connections on a drug really say about the default consciousness we all experience day to day? Maybe he does go into some detail about that later in the book, but the beginning just kept getting more and more religious and spiritual to the point I couldn't listen any further.

after being confronted with dying in an LSD trip i will briefly describe as a nightmare trainwreck of a bad trip that completely blew me apart a couple years back my life has been very confusing and my experience was so hard to process as I really didn't have any proper knowledge of the possibilities and sureties of a high dose trip. after discovering this book my stress, anxiety and fear of what happened to me that night have been erased. An Extremely Important Contribution
What an unexpected and amazing piece of work! This is not your run of the mill book on psychedelics. What Christopher has accomplished here is of immeasurable importance for humanity in general, and is particularly helpful for those already exploring consciousness, as well as those who will embark on this path in the months and years ahead. Christopher's experiences and the understanding he has gained from them and has shared with all of us in this book can provide other explorers with important context and perspective which can help us move through the inherent difficulties encountered on this accelerated path of enlightenment.
Thank You Christopher!

A gift to humanity
This book is a must read for any serious entheogenic practitioner and for serious spiritual practitioners. I believe it is of the very highest philosophical substance, and is derived from direct observation and experience. This is a book for generations yet to come. The relationship between purification and higher states of consciousness is the most lucid account I have ever heard on the very real challenges faced on the spiritual journey and the treasures beyond the fires of purification. The account feels so genuine and heartfelt that it triggers a resonant note in the heart of the initiated. This book is like a call for humanity to awaken and become conscious players in the evolution of the universe and create a heavenly realm here on earth. A book like this is truly a wonder and a great gift to humanity. during this time of upheaval uncertainty and global crisis, the release of this book could not have been timed more appropriately

As an aspiring writer, psychedelic initiate, and spiritually-minded truth seker Christopher Bache has succeeded in elevating my quest for truth and fulfilment. So many of his truths resonated so deeply within me that I can't not accept them as my own and having done so they fall like jigsaw-puzzle pieces into the sense-making puzzle of my own existence and my own part in the collective blossoming of the species. With that acceptance comes a grave fear of what awaits us, but also genuine excitement about the wonders that lie on the other side.
I am eternally grateful that this book came across my path and to the author for a staggering piece of work.
Thank you

Goes on and on...missing the main course
The title sounded engaging and the book was recommended. However, the author goes on and on, mouthing wise words abs statements. It feels like the whole of the first chapter is an elongated introduction.
Bored, quite frankly.
Lets see what the later chapters hold. Have sampled a few abs they don’t hold much promise.

stunningly presented
This subject is a very hard one to explain to people that havnt experienced it. Bache does an excellent job at describing his sessions and what came out of them. I can say, personally, that what I experienced was in this book, almost word for word. fantastic. If you haven't experienced it, then this book might be abit of a slug for you. but if you know you know.

Didn't enjoy it
I usually love this type of book gave up on this one....vague, makes a sorts of assumptions and tries way too hard to be academic...

Interesting idea but got bored
I was excited about his personal experiment but it quickly became so unbelievable expecting us to believe in supernatural beings that could only be communicated with while tripping on high doses of LSD. I’m more inclined to believe we know little about how our brains work especially in an altered state.
