Publisher's Summary
Investigative journalist Laura Chambers is back in her tiny hometown of Hillsborough, North Carolina, the one place she swore never to return. Fired from The Boston Globe, her career in shambles, she reluctantly takes a job with the local paper. The work is simple, unimportant, and worst of all, boring - at least until a missing girl turns up dead, the body impeccably clean, dressed to be the picture of innocence.
Years earlier, 10-year-old Patty Finch left home and never made it back. But for the people of Hillsborough, Patty was just the beginning. Child after child disappeared, a reign of terror the town desperately wants to forget. Now that terror has returned to seize another girl. And another. And another.
This is the story Laura's been waiting for - her one last chance to get back onto the front page. She dives deeper into a case that runs colder by the second, only to discover the truth may be far closer to home than she could have ever imagined.
Powerful, intricate, and tense, Last Girl Gone will have you looking over your shoulder long after the last page.

Story is good but
I am halfway through and will write update if I change my mind. Heroine is your a typical reporter, nothing special and one that seems to have no problem screwing over anyone for a story. If I can’t make it through it’s because the main character pisses me off to much to enjoy the story. Also want to punch mother in the face.

Implausible Sharp Objects knockoff

Unbelievable characters and poor narrating made this book hard to finish. All the men are abusive and misogynistic. The therapist is unprofessional. The main character is misunderstood at every turn. Many characters are superfluous. Bad story. Bad writing. Bad narrating.

Game of two half’s
Story not bad - I shan’t be going to North Carolina anytime soon! At first narrator got on my nerves - too dramatic and breathy. Also, at first I had no idea what was going on and found myself not really listening- this was probably because there seemed like too many characters and the story confused me. However it did get better at the end and there was a good twist .

Quite entertaining
However, yet another woman who is superior at absolutely every level much more so than any of the actual experts in their own field. That is fairly formulaic and is becoming a bit tiresome. I appreciate it is fiction and this maybe creates more drama but it would be nice, occasionally, not to be shocking, that a woman is good at her job, no frills! At least she didn’t climb on to anyone’s lap!

Couldn’t finish
The performance was so dreadful, that the only thing worse than how it was read was the main character herself. Just the most unlikeable, miserable character. The unprofessional therapist, the reading out of the digits slowly, the main character acting like a cold asshole - I couldn’t finish it, I was both bored and extremely annoyed.. Can't fully evaluate the story since I didn't finish, hence the three stars.

An intriguing mystery, if somewhat gruesome
I often stop listening to books when the descriptions are just too awful, and while there are some bits of this book I would rather not have etched in my consciousness, the story as a whole hangs together pretty well. I was a bit confused by the actions of one of the law officers who I thought might be the perpetrator - maybe that was intentional by the author, but mostly it was a well constructed mystery.

I found the main character a bit heartless and disliked her way of using people and simply didn’t believe in her caring about the victims in the story. I didn’t believe in the psychologist either. The whole thing seemed cardboard. But it kept me listening.
