Running from a devastating relationship that almost cost her everything, Maddy Hart impulsively accepts a job as a live-in caretaker at imposing Lakeview House. She has no memories of having visited the crumbling mansion on the banks of Lake Thirlmere before, but when she arrives, something about the house feels familiar. The more time Maddy spends in the house, the more unsettled she feels. By day, she clears out the dusty rooms, but in the dead of night, it’s hard to explain away the eerie noises or crackly radio she hears hours after she turned it off.

Publisher's Summary
An absolutely gripping thriller with pause-resisting suspense
Lucy watches the doctor leave, then turns to the nameless victim on the table. "I promise I will catch whoever did this to you," she whispers.
In charge of a new team, Detective Lucy Harwin is called out to attend the discovery of a woman’s body in an abandoned, crumbling church and is quickly plunged into a case that will test her leadership skills to the limit.
With no leads except the crudely-fashioned crucifix the victim was displayed on, Lucy is at a complete loss. That is, until another body turns up: an elderly woman who devoted her life to the church.
Faced with a killer stalking the streets of her small coastal town, while also throwing herself into work to forget the love of her life, Lucy’s first case is turning into a nightmare.
Linking the killer to the church where her own teenage daughter volunteers, it seems the threat is quickly drawing closer to Lucy and those she loves. Can she catch this monster and prevent a tragedy that will tear her world apart?
An addictive and pause-resisting crime thriller that will hook fans of Patricia Gibney, LJ Ross, and Angela Marsons from the very first minute.

Almost a Prequel Without a Cause
It took me about 3/4 of the way through this novel to realize how this novel could work as a prequel. When writing a prequel, it should serve a purpose to inform the previous novels. Well it does, like I say, serve this purpose close to the end, there are at least four major events over the course of this novel that would’ve informed the behavior and the references in the previous two novels but didn’t. It almost makes me wonder if this author thought up this prequel after-the-fact to answer some questions from the first novel. Strategic authors plan their novels ahead so that if something in the future needs to inform something in the past, they’ve incorporated information into the earlier novels.
Otherwise it’s a perfectly fine novel and I enjoyed it.

maybe reread your books before you write
in the last book Lucy and George were divorced and Tom's very good friends were murdered which gave him a heart attack.plus, Lucy's daughter had a job and was done being mad at her mom and getting her life back together. now in the next book, her daughter is in a ton of trouble again and hates her again? and Tom's mom is murdered? it had to be tom? do you hate tom? and Matty is questioning Lucy's abilities to be objective since she is so broken up over George cheating on her? we already cleared this up. now its a raw gaping wound that is clouding her judgement? and does Matty respect her and always have her back or does he doubt and challenge everything she says ? I can't even finish the third book.

Order of Series is Numbered Incorrectly
While the storyline is amazing. I am disappointed with what was advertised and I purchased as Book 3 in the Detective Lucy Harwin series. When reading a series, I make it a point to look at the publishing date to ensure the order. As much as the layers of Lucy's character unfolded in book 1 & 2; I feel it equally digressed in Book 3.

Read this book first. It is not a prequel It is book 1.
The book was spoiled by Audible having listed this as book 3.
It isn't.
As soon as I started to listen to this book I realized there were problems. The age of her daughter. The period of time Lucy had been separated from her husband was suddenly 2 months instead of 2 years. Then 2 homicides noted in book "1" of characters who are suddenly alive. There are so many other things that would be spoilers.
What a shame.
Read all 3 but read this one first otherwise you will be seriously disappointed. They are all good.
Really important to read reviews even if it is just to find out if a book is being reissued under a different title or it is being reissued after many years and it doesn't pop up as a book you have bought before.
Or in this case listed in the wrong order.

Good story but disappointing
I’ve loved the other 2 Lucy Harwin books but this one was spoiled for me very early on as it is actually the first book. As the other 2 books refer to the events of this one multiple times I felt like i knew the ending and identity of the perpetrator very early on. So much so I stopped listening as didn’t need to hear the end. That said it was another great story and well read.
