Journalist Charlie Cates has always believed in facts, in what can be proved - her career depends on it. Which is why she has never truly accepted the supernatural visions that guide her to children in danger. Ten years ago, Craig Johnson wrote his first short story, the Hillerman Award-winning "Old Indian Trick". This was one of the earliest appearances of the sheriff who would go on to star in Johnson’s best-selling, award-winning novels and the A&E hit series Longmire. Each Christmas Eve thereafter, fans rejoiced when Johnson sent out a new short story featuring an episode in Walt’s life that doesn’t appear in the novels; over the years, many have asked why they can’t buy the stories in book form.

When Santa Claus is a cop, you better watch out. It’s not looking like a very merry Christmas for San Diego cop Nick Pappas. Suspended from his job, alienated from his family, and persecuted by the press, he’s sorely tempted to turn his gun on himself. Except for his first name, he couldn’t possibly have less in common with jolly old St. Nicholas. Story
An 11-year-old boy's violated corpse is found in a town park. Eyewitnesses and fingerprints point unmistakably to one of Flint City's most popular citizens. He is Terry Maitland, Little League coach, English teacher, husband, and father of two girls. Detective Ralph Anderson, whose son Maitland once coached, orders a quick and very public arrest. Maitland has an alibi, but Anderson and the district attorney soon add DNA evidence to go with the fingerprints and witnesses. Their case seems ironclad.

Publisher's Summary
A razor-sharp, exquisitely paced, madly fun debut thriller that gleefully lampoons Hollywood culture and introduces the highly eccentric yet brilliant ex-detective gone rogue: Charlie Waldo.
There are run-of-the-mill eccentric Californians, and then there's former detective Charlie Waldo.
Waldo, a onetime LAPD superstar, now lives in solitude deep in the woods, pathologically committed to owning no more than 100 possessions. He has left behind his career and his girlfriend, Lorena, to pay self-imposed penance for an awful misstep on an old murder case. But the old ghosts are about to come roaring back.
There are plenty of difficult actors in Hollywood, and then there's Alastair Pinch.
Alastair is a onetime Royal Shakespeare Company thespian who now slums it as the "wise" Southern judge on a tacky network show. He's absurdly rich, often belligerent, and typically drunk - a damning combination when Alastair's wife is found dead on their living room floor and he can't remember what happened.
Waldo's old flame Lorena, hiding peril of her own, draws him toward the case, and Alastair's greedy network convinces Waldo to take it on. But after such a long time away from both civilization and sleuthing - and plagued by a confounding array of assailants who want him gone - Waldo must navigate complicated webs of ego and deceit to clear Alastair's name... or confirm his guilt.

Great Reading of a Fun Mystery
I truly enjoyed John Michael Higgins' reading of "Last Looks" audio book. A variety of entertaining characters brought to life by this talented actor with different voices and accents kept the pace moving and made the plot easier to follow -- always appreciated when listening to a book with many characters. The story was entertaining and best of all, there were no inexplicable loose ends when I finished. I can't wait to listen to Howard Michael Gould's next mystery with Charlie Waldo!

I checked this out cuz I saw they have made a movie out of it and I'm a big fan of detective novels and hadn't heard of this one. I now see why I haven't heard of this series. also I really didn't find the narrator engaging oh, he did a serviceable job but to me the voice just didn't match with the idea of a seasoned Detective.

Wonderful entertainment and performance!
Great performance of Howard Michael Gould eccentric loner, Waldo by John Michael Higgins. Higgins brought this character to as he expertly captured the tone and, I believe, intent of the author. This is a strange story. I urge you to persevere through character building chapter, because you'll be in for a ride - faster than a 10-speed down a mountain pass.
