Story
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Publisher's Summary
The war begins....
The world of Ruin erupts into the flames of war as a great evil rises once more from the Tombs of Eternal Midnight. Werewolves and vampires march from the east, the orcs of Umnoth are on the move, and cities disappear beneath the boots of these savage hordes. Kingdoms field desperate armies in a last desperate bid to stop the tides of darkness, but the truth is clear.
The hour of final ruin has come.
Yet the wizard Vandahar has one more card to play: Rangers. Allied with elves and dwarves, they set out to strike at the very heart of the evil Lich Pharaoh’s domain by attacking from a wholly unexpected direction.
Survival. Asymmetrical warfare. Total surprise. This is what the Rangers do best.
But first they must survive the Citadel.
What the forces of evil have started, the Rangers will finish!

The story just keeps getting better.
I don't think I have ever identified with a literary character more than I have with Talker. He represents the struggle that we have with being good enough and the question if you even belong so why try. His arc to this point in the story is tough to follow, and as he often says, "warts and all." It's tough, but you can't help but want to know how he deals. The ending of this audiobook broke my 10 year slump of actually reading a physical book because I HAD to know what happened next.
Check this out if you love Military fiction, Fantasy, or a reluctant hero stories.

Epic Extraordinary
It's crazy how good these are! book 3 is just as good as 1 and 2.
I have rarely listened to a story that draws you in so fast and holds you there. Like a Ranger in the dark before the knife falls. I need this in movie form. It needs to be given more avenues of expression, animation, cinema, fan flicks, etc. I would give it a hundred stars if I could.

4.7 Audible won't let me do decibels.
Oh boy. To keep it frank I rate a story based on a few key points. Usually they're summed up by "how much I'm emotionally invested and mentally stimulated". When Tanner (who is a Revanant for anyone not versed in irish mythology or d&d) started "writing" I actually teared up. As someone who just got done with a break up that part of the story also got my mind and heart turning. As someone raised by and around and dated military vets this also got me engaged. The only problem I have with this is I'm a 29 year old bearded guy crying over a fictional coffee addict. 100% would recommend.

A series ready for the SciFi Channel!
You could give this series the budget Star Gate (the series) had and you'd wind up with another 10-year money maker. Sure, there is a bit-too much internal dialog and a ton of 'Ranger-love' but it's a great series and one day deserves a mini-series at the very least.

Felt like half a book
Really enjoyed the earlier books which seemed to balance both fast pace with just enough character development and world building to keep me wanting to see where it's all going.
This instalment really felt like it was the first half of a book, feel a little short-changed as I know these guys have delivered earlier in the series. without spoilers- We basically saw part of a plan and no real specific villain or enemy to overcome.
Talker's regretful story could have had better effect, just seemed to fizzle a bit and lacked sufficient explanation on why he behaved the way he did at the time.
The narration was great as always, but I might not be so quick to pre-order next time
