Publisher's Summary

“Les limites de mon langage signifient les limites de mon monde.” This is one of the most famous phrases of the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein, namely, "The limits of my language mean the limits of my world."

I really like this phrase because when we learn a new language, we are also learning a piece of the history and culture of that country. Language isn’t just the sum total of words, grammatical principles, and sentence construction, but also unique cultural norms, social systems, and cognitive processes.

The advantages of learning foreign languages are mushrooming as the world becomes increasingly globalized, and bilingualism is now perhaps the most useful real-world skill to ever exist. If you’re thinking about making an effort to learn a new foreign language, you are on the right street to success.

Why study French?

French is used by over 235 million speakers daily in over 54 countries. But why should you pick French out of all the languages you could be learning?

To start, France isn’t just one of the most beautiful countries in central Europe, but a global powerhouse with a significant presence in the automobile, aircraft, chemical manufacturing, electronic, machinery, metallurgy industries, and tourism. In fact, 35 percent of the global Fortune 500 companies are headquartered in France.

Learning French will not only help you out as a tourist in France, the Caribbean, or Africa, but also as a rising professional looking to expand or diversify your business in the global market. Not only that but French, being a romance language, shares so many elements with the other languages in its family, such as Spanish and Italian, that learning French will help you understand those languages—and give you a significant boost if you wish to learn them, too.

Finally, it’s well-proven that learning another language can lead to many new career opportunities, whether that’s becoming a more attractive candidate or qualifying for a promotion at your current position.

Now, the road to learning French isn’t always going to be easy, of course. That’s exactly why we’ve put together this comprehensive audio course for beginner French.

In this course, we’re going to take you through the first steps of your French journey, from beginner to an intermediate level. Good resource, but room for improvement

So far, this has been a good tool to help a beginner learn a bit of French. I am making progress. The vocabulary presented is very diverse and real-world, and provides a huge selection of material to draw from for most any scenario you might encounter. It isn't going to happen fast - like anything, it will require repetition and and focus to make progress.
As far as improvements, two things stand out:
1. In the section after the short stories are presented, the narrator introduces some of the phrases and words that are used. The phrases are very useful and instructive. However, he recites the entire list first in French, then recites the entire list in English. Given that the list of phrases are over 50 words, by the time he gets around to the English, you will have forgotten the original French. Each phrase should be given in French and then immediately followed with its English version.
2. In the sections "Daily French Lessons", the chapters contain a up to a dozen "days" each, which each day dedicated to covering a particular grammar component (such as adjectives, prepositions, etc) in great detail. These "chapters" are up to two hours in length. It would be more useful if each chapter were broken up, with each "Day" becoming its own chapter. This would make it much easier to repeat specific areas of interest. I know you can set bookmarks but this is a fiddly process and you cannot search like you can in an e-book if you want to get to a particular point.

Awesome French language course

Though the language itself is fairly tricky to grasp at times, I'm gradually starting to learn more & more, and it's not as cryptic as it was, when I first started listening this audiobook, this is a pretty awesome French language course.

Great to have a native French teacher

Great to have a native French speaker teaching French, it is a well planned course. Everything seems to be very clear and easy. The best thing about Audible is that they provide great and affordable courses like this one.

Not a French course and seems a bit home made

This not 28 hours of lessons, although I found a few tracks that have some explanation. I only got 1/3 through the audiobook and gave up as the content and pronounciation were really irritating me. After painfully sorting through a non-native reading through a random jumble of phrases and word definitions, with many of the literal translations being wrong, I got to the stories then had the premature idea that the vocabulary content had been carefully selected to build a foundation for the stories but soon realised this was not the case. The content does not follow the learning journey of a student and jumps around from absolute beginner to upper intermediate level.
On the plus side, this gives quite a lot of content for getting exposure to the language if you don’t pay a high purchase price and you don’t mind the strange accents and fragmented material. I wonder whether this is Canadian French rather than French from France, although the cover image clearly shows a French flag.
