Publisher's Summary

Injury. Adrenaline. Addiction. These are the things that fuelled one man's race to international stardom as he pushed boundaries and took life on and off the bike to the limits.

Starting out as a talented youth riding the desert tracks of California, his reckless nature and incredible talent earned him a position in the rarefied world of professional motorcycle racing. Despite the success in his professional life, his personal life was crumbling around him - John was battling with depression and temptation, which began to threaten his career, health and marriage, ultimately bringing him to a life of alcoholism, addiction and even smuggling.

In his remarkable memoir, one of the world's most renowned riders takes us on a raw and unique journey to the extremes of fast living.

John 'Hopper' Hopkins is an icon for motorsport fans worldwide. He won't let anything hold him back. He has broken almost every bone in his body (twice), suffered a bleed on the brain and had a finger amputated...yet he continued to race. Finally, at the age of 35 - with his latest crash at Brands Hatch in 2017 putting him in rehab for two years - he decided to hang up his helmet.

Leathered tells the incredible story of an unparalleled career. From bone-crunching injuries and alcohol-fuelled antics to the breakdown of his marriage, it unveils the true stories behind the lurid headlines.

Raw

An insane life story, pure, and astonishingly raw. I love the natural form of writing/storytelling. Well done Hopper! Thank you for giving back to this amazing sport.

Excellent

As a MotoGP fan I had heard bits a pieces of Hopkins story/stories… But wow what journey.. excellent narration, made me feel as though I was listening to John talk and tell stories, not like I was being read to.
Definitely recommend to any GP fan who’s remotely interested, especially American GP fans..

Unreal!

I was both horrified and amazed while listening to Hopper’s story, so much success amidst so many challenges.
Thank you for sharing, and thank you for continuing to share your love of motorcycling with upcoming racers and the world. Take care of those girls, you never know, they may throw a leg over a GP bike one day!
My only feedback is that the narrator probably could have done more research on the pronunciation of names and places that we all know so well in the motorcycling community, but that’s nitpicky 😜

WOW, interesting, honest, eye opening

I thought this was a really interesting look into the lives of professional athletes. Unfortunately I think we forget athletes are real people with real problems, this is a good reminder.

Racers will relate

I believe that most racers will be able to relate to this book and the struggles within.

I've said for years that racing is an addiction, the big question is what do you do with that after your racing time is over?

This is an excellent read and I've already recommended it to quite a few people.

Great work John Hopkins! Looking forward to seeing how you can help get the United States back into the worldwide motorcycle racing conversation.

Wow! Through all of those injuries/setbacks he kept fighting for his dream. Great book!

Awesome, a Roller Coaster Ride Literally!

John Hopkins may not have become MotoGP World Champion but in my eyes he is more than that, a true Champion in every sense.

I am sure at times he could be a right royal pain in the backside, but can't we all be.

He has had so many obstacles in his way during his motorcycle racing career/journey in life including his body being truly and utterly batttered to oblivion.....in breaking bones he probably exceeded Evel Knievel's breakages!

He has already accomplished so so much in his life so far, in fact probably in his first 25 years as opposed to many others will ever achieve in a lifetime.

No doubt there are many stories and tales that could be told but due to legality or not wanting to cross certain individuals/groups/people.

Perhaps Bikes and Banter with Jamie Whitham could persuade John Hopkins to do a countrywide tour, I am sure there would be a massive interest and not just from the motorcycle fraternity.

Go and purchase the book and/or download it including audible, it is a must read or great listen.

Wow !

I really didn’t expect a warts and all biography of Johns life and as a manic motorcycle enthusiast who has been sober for nearly ten years myself the way he explains the highs and lows of the sport and lifestyle that goes with it, it struck many chords with me and reminded me also of moments I’m not proud of. All together a fantastic book which I recommend to anyone.
I’ve seen John in the paddock at silverstone and knowing a bit about him I had never approached thinking what would I have to offer a super star like him ? If I have that chance again I will definitely congratulate him on a wonderful career and an excellent book.

If you're into biographies, this is a book for you

Regardless of your affiliation with MOTO GP (I have near on zero and would struggle to know more than 3 brands of bikes, I'm just a sucker for a good biography), this is a pretty wild and in-depth story of an elite athlete and extreme performer. An absolutely wild life on and off the bike. Will definitely have this on circulation.
