Publisher's Summary

Witness the rise of man’s first galactic federation: The Terran Alliance.

When Simon and Katherine Hawke stumble upon an alien shuttle that has landed on earth, it’ll not only change the course of their lives, but of the entire world. Taking the shuttle into orbit, they discover a much larger ship left adrift with no one on board. Commandeering it, they confirm that we’re not alone in the universe and must prepare the human race for what is about to come.

Recruiting from all over the world, they begin to expand their fleet and build a federation to give humans a foothold in the galaxy. Thus, the Terran Alliance is formed, led by Simon, Kitty, Gayle, and their new comrades.

Everything is going according to planned as they construct more ships, but the governments of the world are vying for control of these technologies. To make matters worse, their second encounter with an alien species is not one of peace. After the attack, they are left with more questions than answers as they face resistance from, not only outer space, but their home planet as well.

Childish Writer Rant

The fiction book starts with a message from the writer about his nutty views of the world. It continued into the fiction book until I busted out laughing for the third time and gave up.

dumb characters and silly senarios abound

I feel like this book was written as a highschool project by someone with no personal growth or insight into the real workings of people or society as a whole. From the silliness of the technology and how the characters figure it out is just too juvenile to even wrap my head around. I gave up 8 hours in, there is no hope for it. Definitely skip this.

Oh, and I don't know what the top review is talking about when they complain about this being a book with forced gender reversal roles. That is NOT the case. The main female characters even gives her command to her husband because she wants to make sure that the command is taken seriously. I mean what the hell......

Fail

Interesting idea but the characters are irritatingly stupid. How did this get on audible. I haven’t finished the book so maybe I will change my review. Blah blah blah.

Great Start... Looking to the next book

Decent story...
Action..
Surprises..
The narrator did a great job as usual.

If you like the "Lost fleet" series you should give this one a try,.

I'm not a smart man but I'm insulted

Forest Gump would be insulted . Should have realized after the remarkably bizarre childish preface. ADHD like story it's all over the place.
i can't take any more of these stupid characters and painful descriptions. Is this writer 12? What a silly person this writer is not ready to be published. BUT Mark Boyett WHY?
Audible why?

Gone too soon but Left Behind a great legacy

While the ending is predictable this is one of those books where is the journey that's important we grapple with what if civilians got their hands on a ship we deal with the personal the political the psychological of dealing with this and dealing with the greater galactic implications that we searched to see in this book I like this book like dune it's something where you don't just read it you get into it I just wish that podium would put the all the books out every months in this series Because the 1st book is OK and the reason why I mean just it in the next one is because podium with smart and put in exerts from the next book so hopefully it'll be out sooner than later because this is Stephanie 1 where you want to read all of the books in the series in 1 sitting otherwise it could get lost in a library or overlooked for the presses gem that it is

An amazing story of hope and betrayal

Imagine the chance to change human destiny for the better. Now imagine the fear of a US government afraid of losing power, position, and privilege. The collision of these values is the basis of this story. As a professional peacemaker, I can hardly wait to see how this shakes out. This is a must buy and a must listen.

Good filler between other series

Boyett didn't do a good job in this one. I too many of his characters sounded the same and got confusing. heard quite a few voices from Undying mercenaries in this book like Graves, about the book: The idea of taking thousands of volunteers over the course of 2 years and not be known all over the world is silly. Also how did these people get paid? its mentioned about mining a astroid of gold but not sure if that happened. I really didn't get into a bunch of civilians' playing soldier. The other thing that bugged me is after the first aliens attacked the first doc, on how fast, like over night a bunch of dumb monkeys who have been in space for less than a year are able to make huge improvements to weapons, shields, build new "fighters".... Thee was WAY WAY WAY too much startrek influence. Then the AI is written out due to some virus but the human monkeys are able to stop the virus from destroying the AI database but the AI is absent through out most of the book.

Interesting Concept, but terrible characters

I really wanted to like this book. The idea was interesting and I had hoped this would be a new series similar to the "silver ship" series. Unfortunately it was not, maybe it improved near the end, but I gave up and still had 2 1/2 hours left of listening time.

Before getting into all the bad, i thought that the narrator did a good job. As for all the bad, it really just came down to the characters. This author must be very "pro-woman", the sad part is the woman that he must surround himself with must be jerks. He tried to sell a marriage between the two main MCs, however the majority of the time she is talking down to her husband, threatening him, and outright ignoring him. I am unsure what type of marriage the author has had, but mine is built on mutual understanding and love, not on doing what I am told.

Multiple times the female characters, who chose to have the male MC run things just flat out ignore protocol or get so upset with the decisions made that they mock and belittle the male characters. I could go on, but in the end instead of writing decent characters that build on each other and support each other, it was a story about angry woman upset by the decisions made by men.

This book could have been so good if not for the outright man hating and poorly written female characters.

It's not working for me

I'm on about chapter 7 and I'm struggling. The characters just aren't very good and the dialogue/characters thoughts are basically juvenile in their sophistication. The general plot interests me but it is frankly very poorly written. The characters seem wooden and there is nothing for Mark Boyett to work with. I'll give it another 5 chapters but I doubt I'll finish it.

update: no I can't finish it. Truly dreadful. The characters just don't have any "realness".

Beautiful Idea, ruined by being nauseatingly woke.

The general idea behind this story ... a feel good pro-human story tale of boot-strapping space industrialisation is excellent (a la Bobiverse).

Mark Boyett as narrator is superb (as always).

The actual characters ... pass the barf bag: Hyper emotional, hyper virtuous, condescending, self righteous ... and worst of all ... 100% morally flawless. And the bad guys ... 100% predictable, and 100% bad, bad, bad.

Verdict: wasted opportunity.

Very childish writing, I don’t know anyone who would converse like this. Awful. Go take a listen to Craig Alanson, or anything read by RC Bray. How did this get past a proofreader

Admin in space

Humans find a ship that requires 900 crew so a couple and a few friends then spend most of the book selecting and recruiting these people. It's like a documentary about Starfleets HR department; a lot of admin, very little action or interesting plot development.

Not for me

Struggling with this book for a while now. I'm halfway through and it still reads like I'm reading "adventures" of an HR department. Nothing exciting is happening except for everyone being promoted. Stopped listening.

Ugh

Sometimes you find a book that seems to have a good story, but the author has packed it full of so much BS that it's really hard to enjoy where the story goes even...

If someone's going to be elevated to "space guy" from normality, then leave their wives and girlfriends at home. It only adds an air of irresponsibility and unprofessional attitudes that you can never get rid of.

If you're going to form an off-the-cuff military, then don't just sit around giving each other promotions without letting the reader get used to the organization first. It just lacks any kind of authenticity and authority. It'd be like handing someone a 1st place trophy for the 100m sprint when they didn't even enter the race. It's meaningless.

Fun romp with a big dollop of American pie

This is a fun light hearted story with a neat twist on private sector space exploration.
The author seems to have a chip on their shoulder over trust in government but makes a few good points. The pro-American thing gets tedious.
I enjoyed the read (Mark is a great storyteller) got hooked and listened to the subsequent books.
The series is entertaining but listen to “the expanse” series first for a riveting well developed and credible story.

My Type of Story

I wish there was a selection within SciFi to search for stories about Current Earth. I see there are 3 more books written on 'Stellar Heritage' but can't find them on Audible, where are they? I haven't enjoyed a book for a long time, I would buy his others if I could find them. Well done Bob.
