Publisher's Summary

There are some things you simply can’t escape. For Van, it’s family.

Out among the stars, his cousin, Carter Yost, drags Van and his team into a criminal ring run by the High Doctor—a dangerous con artist with delusions of grandeur. Working from the abandoned world of Pathway, the High Doctor has created a cult, stealing a fortune from the fearful, sick, and scared.

If there’s one thing Van hates, it’s a bully, and the High Doctor has his full attention. But in order to crush the criminal cult, Van needs bigger, better armor—and that comes with a price.

The rarest metals cost money, and that means doing a few dirty jobs in order to pay for the tools of his trade. Van’s got the will. His team has the skill.

Now, he has to find a way. And the way will surely involve war.

You can take the boy out of Iowa..but...

A great continuation of the series. well worth the coin and time. the ending was a little abrupt...but still great. can't wait for the next release.

I came very close to returning this

This book pulled it out of the fire at the very end when Van had a 'come to Jesus' moment and basically declared he'd be taking the kid gloves off.

I was already in a pretty bad place with the book with the entire start being basically slapstick nonsense - this utterly undermines any serious tones/themes you try to tackle, don't do it if that's what you want to do.

The mood regarding the book got worse simply because Van and his crew should be dead. They fly around the galaxy with an utterly unearned devil-may-care attitude - unearned because the antagonists, as they've been described, should have done away with them ages ago. Like the slapstick humour undermines any serious themes the authors try to tackle, the wildly varying levels of competency on show from these shadowy, 'terrifying' antagonists also undermines any achievements/sense of threat.

Either they're utterly incompetent, in which case why are they a problem? Or they're not and they should be dead with the way the crew is handling themselves.

Oh and stop with the broke cop bullshit. You made your protagonist a hacker with an endless supply of obscenely rich enemies. You picked the wrong background for your character if you want to trot out that perennially broke trope...

This series is in last chance saloon for me - Van basically declaring the kid gloves would be coming off the only reason I'll check out the next book. I very much doubt it and fully expect a return to 'comfortable' norms, but I'll at least give it the chance.

Disappointing

Still pretty dang good.

The first 3rd of the book is a wee bit of a slog, but it pays off with an exciting last 2/3's of the book. Can't wait for the next in the series.

The Star Fun Continues!

Anxiously awaited the sequel and was not dissappointed. The adventure continues with our heroes hopping through the galaxy fighting the bad guys and searching for those baddies hiding in the shadows. Looking forward to their next adventure. Good job Bird, good job!
Gotta love Iggy growing into one bad ass engineer!

Series keeps getting better!

This series caught me in between two other audiobooks and every book is better than the last. Thoughtful, funny, and just well-written (and narrated) science fiction.
