Publisher's Summary

This program is read by the author.

The much-beloved BookTok sensation, Travis Baldree's novel of high fantasy and low stakes.

Come take a load off at Viv's cafe, the first and only coffee shop in Thune. Grand opening!

Worn out after decades of packing steel and raising hell, Viv, the orc barbarian, cashes out of the warrior’s life with one final score. A forgotten legend, a fabled artifact, and an unreasonable amount of hope lead her to the streets of Thune, where she plans to open the first coffee shop the city has ever seen.

However, her dreams of a fresh start filling mugs instead of swinging swords are hardly a sure bet. Old frenemies and Thune’s shady underbelly may just upset her plans. To finally build something that will last, Viv will need some new partners, and a different kind of resolve.

A hot cup of fantasy, slice-of-life with a dollop of romantic froth.

Critic Reviews

"This is a story about following your dreams, even when they take you away from who you thought you had to be. It's sweet, beautiful and, most of all, kind. I hugely recommend this book."—Seanan McGuire, New York Times bestselling author of Every Heart A Doorway

Legends & Lattes is a uniquely beautiful book. Its cast of endearing characters have no interest at all in killing one another. There is no Great Evil, no bloody battles, and yet the pillars of great fantasy—resilience, fellowship, and a desire to make the world a better place—are all here. It’s wonderfully wholesome, and I hope heralds the rise of a 'slice-of-life' sub-genre in modern fantasy.”—Nicholas Eames, author of Kings of the Wyld

“Take a break from epic battles and saving the world. Legends & Lattes is a low-stakes fantasy that delivers exactly what's advertised: a wholesome, cozy novel that feels like a warm hug. This is my new comfort read.”—Genevieve Gornichec, author of The Witch's Heart

Featured Article: Best of the Year—The 12 Best Fantasy Listens of 2022

Between film, television, literature, and audio—2022 could easily be proclaimed the Year of the Fantasy, much to the delight of fans among us. But when it came to picking the best of the best, the glut of fantastic content also significantly increased the CR (challenge rating). This year’s winner edged ahead of the rest thanks to its atmospheric, suck-you-in (pun intended) audio experience, but every performance on this list transported us.

slice of life

I loved it. A performance by Travis is always amazing. The story is simple but it was done beautifully. It was well worth the credit. I'll be buying his next book and the one after that. After reading so many fantasy books full of battle I was unsure if I would like a book about a coffee shop but I was entertained the entire time. Thanks Travis for the wonderful stories :)

The Book of the Year!

The best narrator ever narrating his own book - what a gift!

Sweetness, love and optimism all the way through! From the dedication to the last words, this book (and Travis's voice) is like being wrapped in a warm hug. I could not love this book more.

What a sweetheart of a story!

What a sweetheart of a book! This slice-of-life story was everything I could have hoped for! This is the story of Viv, an Orc barbarian who turns her back on her party and her old adventuring life, to start over. This is the story where Viv sets down roots and sets up a coffee shop!
In case you wondered, this is the same Travis Baldree that's narrated so many amazing books! And This is him writing and reading his own work!

"Viv glanced at the door, and there stood Kellin, again wearing an expression that begged to meet a fist."

"Tandri recovered some of the pieces of a smile."

This book sold me on drinking coffee.

Legends & Lattes is a very cute, very enjoyable book. It's efficient to the point of almost being brusque in a few places... it could EASILY have been padded out by more fluff... but it's very careful not to overstay its welcome. The romance is a little backgrounded, and I would've liked to see more from its resolution, but that's a minor quibble.

The performance of its author definitely elevates the audio version. I've never encountered a book written by an audiobook narrator before, but he not only did a great job delivering it, it was delightful to know that all the character voices were just as he intended them - fun to think that, say, he might have written a quirk like Cal's signature humph with the audio performance already in mind.

All of the characters are adorable, I love them all dearly, and if Baldree sees fit to provide a sequel that's pure domestic fluff, I'll buy the audiobook as soon as I possibly can.

A Cozy Read

I’ve read many books while being cozy but I’ve never read one as mentally cozy as this one. It gives your brain a big warm hug.

A Warm and Inviting Tale

I was curious how Legends and Lattes was going to take it's coffee shop AU theming and apply it to strong fantasy-coded characters and it did not disappoint! I enjoyed guessing each unveiled menu item, and Baldree stays strong and consistent in his characterizations of all of his cast. A short but incredibly sweet storyline and beautifully narrated dialogue made this an immensely satisfying listen.

10000/10

This is one of the most cozy and character driven stories I’ve ever read. You will fall in love with everyone of the characters and hate everyone you’re supposed to. I cannot recommend this book enough, and when I say it deserves all of the praise it’s getting, I’m not exaggerating.

Travis is not only an absolutely fantastic narrator, but he crafts a novel better than almost any other author I’ve read. His performance here is made all the better knowing that when he says a line or a name, you know that pronunciation or intonation is exactly how it’s supposed to sound!

The story is amazing and while it ties everything up nicely, you are left wanting more! I cannot wait for the second book to come out!

A friendly story about doubt, and expectations.

I was held by the progression of the protagonists hope. her inner Monologue a steady stream of self doubts in contrast to her outwardly stoic and imposing exterior (not so much the Suttle metifor, but still a fun one).
the want of belonging, or something not unlike genuine community, and the personal drive of owning something you yourself built-up is admirable. And the spirit of the entrepreneur is depicted well here.

An astounding story with a great author/narrator. If you like D&D and slice of life this is it. Hints of LGBTQ in it. Thank you author and please continue.

A cozy, slice of life fantasy

Legends and Lattes is a book that delivers exactly what it promises: high fantasy and low stakes. This is a sweet story about an orc barbarian who wanted to find out where does the other road lead.

The book was a refreshing break from my usual, darker reads and I loved every moment of it!
The characters are well thought out who feel real, despite the fact that they are non-human. The relationship between them feels natural, their inner struggles, relatable.

I particularly liked the pacing of this book. There was never a boring moment and every chapter mattered. The length of the chapters combined with the flawlessness of the writing makes this an easy and enjoyable read.

Travis's descriptions are so expressive that I not only saw everything like a movie but could almost smell the lightly charamelized and nutty scent of the brewing coffee or the sweet, intoxicating aroma of the cinnamon rolls.

This was a bit of a double edged sword for me as I had a constant craving for latte and cinnamon roll every time I set down to read the book.

In Legends and Lattes there is no world threatening event that can only be stopped by the chosen one whose coming was foretold by a prophecy centuries ago. No villain that tries to take over the world. And no world shattering revelations. In Legends and Lattes there is true friendship, perseverance, hard work and a little bit of romance.

If you are looking for a book that puts a smile on your face, you found it.

A gentle story

This was a really interesting book and different from others I have read. There is a lot of detail about the 'mundane' parts of owning a coffee shop, but it was oddly enjoyable, even as someone who doesn't drink coffee!

I love fantasy books but sometimes their complex world and lore is taxing. This was exactly what I was looking for, a more simple world with great characters and a relaxing read.

i greatly enjoyed this

a self contained slice of life.

much like the build up sequences found in the wandering inn but much more compact :p

one point against is that i kind of feel like it could have used some more action. hopefully author decides to continue the story.

i greatly enjoyed it regardless. i feel like it would fit well as part of an ensemble world with various adventurers dropping by for a cuppa.

Singer/Songwriter

I’ve searched through for my next book by narrator before. I tapped on Travis’ name to find other series to begin because I liked his readings.
Delighted, I discovered he’d published his own work and narrated it too.
Easy choice.
My wife questioned me on why I’d spent a credit on a title only 6 hours long but I dismissed her concerns as this was certainly going to be quality.
I don’t often make recommendations to my friends over books I listen to unless I’m aware of their tastes and if what I’m recommending actually suits them.
At only 6 hours long I know I get get my wife to take a break from her Fairy Porn Book Club and that she’ll buy the sequel, if it happens, before I’m aware it has dropped.
15/15

Wholesome,heart-warming and hilarious

All in all a beautiful story that left me wanting more but completely satisfied with how it ended.

Wonderfully written characters and enough background information about the town and the world that I could see this being used as the background for another book or series.

And I would be remiss to not give the author credit for a job very well done in the voice acting,
