This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but a scream. In the remote mountains of Northern Alaska, Dr. Riley Middleton and her team of archeologists discover a burial site containing mummified remains dating to the last ice age. None of them notice the warning carved into the entrance or realize that the tomb had been deliberately sealed from the outside until they’ve already released a virus that turns ordinary people into murderous monsters. But there’s something even more terrifying inside...something ancient...something unspeakably evil.

It was hailed as the answer to the obesity epidemic; a pill that allows you to eat anything you like and still lose weight. Millions were attracted by the promise of a leaner, fitter body, but there was a fatal and unforeseen flaw in this new panacea. A tiny microbe, lurking within, slowly infects the users. In turn they pass the infection to others with a sneeze, a cough or a simple kiss, and before long tens of millions are infected and turned into mindless, shambling wrecks, with the sole purpose of existing to eat.

It was just a random mutation - one of a billion that happen in viruses every day. But this one was different. It exploded out of Somalia and spread across the oceans before anybody thought to look up from their cell phones to see what was going on. The infected breathed the virus into the air around them, spreading it through the cities faster than anyone thought possible. Hospitals were overwhelmed. Police lines crumbled. Quarantine sites disintegrated. Cities started to collapse.

Should have known better
Ok, the author got my money. That allows me to be straight, dude do some research. Machine Guns? Change the oil with a quart? Seriously makes me want to take stab at writing these types of books. Jumping from the 4th story window and they roll an ankle? You have got to be the ultimate definition of millennial who was not allowed to climb a tree or play with sticks. Well, jokes on me as I tried your second book hoping it would be better.

Fair to good zombie tale
Was ok. Narrator was good and the storyline was good. Not sure I would ever read it again but it was a decent first zombie read. It did become somewhat monotuous after a few chapters of non-stop zombie chasing and killing, but the characters were diverse and interesting enough to keep it entertaining.

Thoughts, feelings with some action thrown in
I’ve never read a ZA book that is seems to be all about hopelessness of any future survival. Nothing goes right for any of the characters and we listen to all their hopeless thoughts and feelings throughout. Sure, there’s some action, but that’s just the background to their thoughts. They get in a bad situation, a plan is made but it’s never discussed so the reader has no idea what they are going to do until they start moving. Then it’s more thoughts and feelings as they move through the landscape. There is no thought process about what to do or how to survive, nothing on tactics or anything of that sort. It’s all about how they feel in the moment or daydreaming about the past. If that’s your cup of tea then this book is for you. I’m not saying it’s bad, it’s just different. Not great, but not bad.
The narrator does a fantastic job.

Horrible people
The characters are the worst part of this story. They’re well-written, but they’re just horrible people. They’re dumb, incompetent, and I’m ok with them dying. The only two characters of value die off. The story is interesting though. You wonder if the author has any survival skills at all. Example….ceiling tiles and roof shingles are two very different things.

After tearing thru book 1, I was thrilled to find there was a book 2. I loved this one as much as book 1 although the ending is quite the cliffhanger & although I found out on kindle that there is a book 3 & 4, they aren't available on audible as of yet. Hopefully they'll be coming soon, but until then I'm thoroughly enjoying other titles available by this author & have yet to be disappointed

so Fing good!
so glad I didnt have to wait very long for the second book narration to come out. Best way to describe this book? love hate relationship. while this is the case though, I feel it lends some realism to the story. Not all characters live, just like in real life, bad things happen to good people. Hell, sometimes there is no reason behind the act, it just is. This, the author does flawlessly. This is also where the reader may find themselves frustrated by a sudden death or event. These are just small detours and bumps in the journey that ultimately sees these characters live and die, but it's the journey that makes this story so great.
also, it takes the author two whole books to mention the word zombie. I was starting to think the characters in this universe didn't have the zombie genre!
Overall great story, I eagerly look forward to the third book in this series!

Fantastic 2nd Chapter In The Rotten World Universe
After listening to the first book in the Rotten World saga I immediately made a start on the the second audiobook and was not disappointed. The story kicked into gear right from the start and continued the ongoing story of the first book's survivors' seemingly futile and desperate attempts to survive in the brutal world of the living dead. The story held my attention throughout the whole audiobook and the time just flew by without me realising it... and now I've reached the end I'm jumping right into book three to find out what happens next (thanks to the cliffhanger ending!)

A couple of steps down from the first book.
Trying to subvert expectations omly worksis if you have charismatic characters you're emotionally invested in.
I'm going to stick with the series in the hope that the author can inject some of the mojo that made his first effort so good.
