Publisher's Summary
New York Times Best Seller
Deena Kastor was a star youth runner with tremendous promise, yet her career almost ended after college, when her competitive method - run as hard as possible, for fear of losing - fostered a frustration and negativity and brought her to the brink of burnout. On the verge of quitting, she took a chance and moved to the high altitudes of Alamosa, Colorado, where legendary coach Joe Vigil had started the first professional distance-running team. There she encountered the idea that would transform her running career: the notion that changing her thinking - shaping her mind to be more encouraging, kind, and resilient - could make her faster than she’d ever imagined possible. Building a mind so strong would take years of effort and discipline, but it would propel Kastor to the pinnacle of running - to American records in every distance from the 5K to the marathon - and to the accomplishment of earning America’s first Olympic medal in the marathon in 20 years.
Let Your Mind Run is a fascinating, intimate look inside the mind of an elite athlete, a remarkable story of achievement, and an insightful primer on how the small steps of cultivating positivity can give anyone a competitive edge.
Critic Reviews
“A candid account about the self-doubt that enters the mind of an elite athlete and how positive thinking made [Kastor] a champion both on and off the course.” (Athletes Quarterly)
“Long-distance runner Deena Kastor shows the secret to her success - and as an Olympic medalist and the American female record holder in the marathon, she’s had more than a few - relies less on any inborn talents, but on ‘the power of thought, attitude and perspective.’ Through race day and training anecdotes, she reveals the mental habits anyone can use to unleash their physical and mental potential.” (Furthermore from Equinox, Five Books High Performers Should Read This Month)
“I have been savoring every story, every morsel of motivation and empowerment; [Kastor] is one of my long time running heroes and I never want this one to end!” (Running 'n' Reading)

Great book
If you ever seen Deena Kastor, she seems to smile A LOT. After reading the book, I now know that the smile reflects her way of thinking. I am not a positive thinking person. Sometimes I get put off by people who are overly positive. But that says more about me than it does about them. The thing I discovered in this book is that I could be positive, too. In my running. In the way I interact with people. In the way I live my life. I’m kind of an old fart, but I’m also willing to try new things that will make my life hopefully more enjoyable. This is a very enjoyable book, even if you don’t run. I would highly recommend it. Thanks, Ms. Kastor. Great job!

Not What It Says On The Tin
This book is totally misleading. The Summary says:
"...an insightful primer on how the small steps of cultivating positivity can give anyone a competitive edge", and
"...she encountered the idea that would transform her running career: the notion that changing her thinking - shaping her mind to be more encouraging, kind, and resilient - could make her faster than she’d ever imagined possible."
It's not that at all.
I bought the book thinking it was going to let us in on a secret to greater success, but sadly there was only one TINY section in one of the chapters about bringing a good attitude. Stuff you can learn from a 30 minute self help book summary. And it wasn't even explained properly either.
All Let Your Mind Run actually is, is a blow by blow account of every race by way of trying to make us think "Wow, look how lovely and humble she is, she's not self-obsessed at all, she just has natural "talent".
And what's with the "poor me" half baked inclusion in the story of how the men she ran with to practice and who were her friends, were suddenly so mean to her and told her they don't like her. There's no explanation to any of this other than the additional attempt at trying to tell us how lovely she is by adding "maybe they didn't like that I am always so cheerful". I mean come on, it's not kindergarten. Grown men don't just suddenly tell you they don't like you and don't want to be friends with you anymore, without you doing something to P!$$ them off.....
Anyway, with all that being said, if you're looking for a read just because you like her, then go for it. If, like me, you thought you were going to learn something new and exciting, then go back to the store section and keep looking. This book is not the one.

Excellent memoir and inspiring journey
TL,DR: I wish Deena Kastor had another book out because I was so enthralled with her writing and reading that I’m bummed I finished the book.
The author has a way of making you feel like she’s your best friend telling you about her day/week/month/life. Her memoir highlights not only her many accomplishments but also her mindset during the events. I especially enjoyed her mental practices that helped her to visualize her (literal) path as well as her positive outlook. She’s a positive person but not so over-the-top that you’re rolling your eyes at her perkiness. I’m looking forward to rereading this book in the future and focusing on some of the nuanced practices. Overall, a great book that I highly recommend to runners and non-runners.

Inspiring Read
As an amateur athlete, I listen to a lot of adventure, sport and travel audiobooks for inspiration. I am fascinated by their stories and personalities- especially endurance and elite athletes. One of the themes I've observed is that a lot of them are super hard on themselves, and can rely on negative self-talk and in some cases have unhealthy mental or physical habits to push past the competition or a milestone in athletics.
From my personal experience, I used to be very hard on myself too, and have been afraid in the past to let that go for fear that I would lose my desire to push myself. My fears are slightly validated by some biographies of top performers where they demonstrate a little (or a lot) of self-loathing.
I really want to believe something different - that one can climb to the top of their field with a positive mindset and healthy habits. In search for this evidence, I landed on this book, and it very much supports this. Deena's ability to practice positive thinking and overcome mental barriers over her decades long career is worthy of respect, and she consciously chooses to change her mindset and work on it.
There is no one path to excellence but I believe this is worth a read for anyone who is interested in pushing their limits in a positive way.
And aside from all that, she is just a cool person and it was really interesting for me to follow her career.

Great book beautifully delivered, I feel I learn from
this having priorities, focus and appreciation will create that positivity we all strive for particularly when running. I love how Deena portrays without evening realising how keeping a focused life concentrating on a few passions really brings out the best in all of us and leads to a more satisfying life. Keep it simple and look within as to what’s really important in your life.

The best running book I have read/heard!!
I knew of Deena Castor as an elite marathon runner but not the life detail or her performances and records. What drew me to this book was the promise of mind over matter. Using your mind as a powerful tool to improve self and improve running performance. It is a great book with huge insight into every detail of Deena's high school running days, her rise to fame and amazing performances at the highest level. The detail in the race accounts is stunning. I loved every gripping recollection of her racing days. So much to learn and admire from one of the greats of Marathon running. A definite recommendation for anyone looking to be inspired and motivated to train harder, wiser and reach your goals.

Dull
I kept hoping hat the book would get better but it never did. I found it dull, self-absorbed and with lots of pop psychology, with very little scientific backing. Deena Kastor is no doubt a fantastic athlete but this left a lot to be desired. Not insightful, interesting or engaging. Reluctantly finished because I wasn’t able to return it on Audible.

More Than just a Book about Running
I have read lots of great books about running and this , for me , is definitely one of them . It is more than a book about running but one about building character and resilience . I loved how Kastor dealt with a fall out of friendship . I wish I had of read this book as a young person but even now it has influenced me .

Thoroughly enjoyable
As an amateur runner and creator of negative thoughts, this book ticks all the boxes.
Deena's story telling is both uplifting and informative. Whilst I'll not be hitting the same speed and distances, I can take the lessons on positive thinking and mental fortitude into every long mile and every bad meeting.

Inspiring
I never knew what Deena’s achievements were exactly. Now I know, to say I am impressed is an understatement! Great listen, inspiring and worth the money you pay for this. I personally took notes on some tips to take with me into the London Marathon. A race of many this American excelled in!

Great book more about strengthening your mind than running
I’m ne was to running so have tried to emerge myself in the lives of people who are successful and why. This was a great book about overcoming the mental challenges in running but also how that can shape our everyday.

The best book I have bought on audible
This book is uplifting and helpful. The stories of courage are so well executed. Philosophies here apply to life ... not just running. Loved it. Will listen to it again.

Positivity abounds
Loved it. The way Deena tells her story from start to finish it helps see the psychological development she went through over her years as an elite athlete. Her attitudes and the advice given to her are applicable to anyone, even if you aren't running.
