Story
Bernie Raleigh is a failure at nearly everything he touches. Nobody notices a loser, and after being kidnapped for ransom as a child, Bernie has spent his adult life trying to avoid being noticed. That's impossible now that he's inherited his grandfather's enormous fortune. The inheritance comes complete with a mansion, a lot of obligations, and a very problematic housekeeper named Meda Amos. Beauty queen, alien abductee, crypto-Jew, single mother—Meda is all those things, and she may be the only person who can help Bernie survive his new and very public life.

Story
The Latecomer follows the story of the wealthy New York City-based Oppenheimer family, from the first meeting of parents Salo and Johanna, under tragic circumstances, to their triplets born during the early days of IVF. As children, the three siblings–Harrison, Lewyn, and Sally–feel no strong familial bond and cannot wait to go their separate ways, even as their father becomes more distant and their mother more desperate. When the triplets leave for college, Johanna makes the decision to have a fourth child. What role will the “latecomer” play in this fractured family?

Story
As children, Sam and Elli were two halves of a perfect whole: gorgeous identical twins whose parents sometimes couldn’t even tell them apart. They fell asleep to the sound of each other’s breath at night, holding hands in the dark. And once Hollywood discovered them, they became B-list child TV stars, often inhabiting the same role. But as adults, their lives have splintered. After leaving acting, Elli reinvented herself as the perfect homemaker: married to a real estate lawyer, living in a house just blocks from the beach.

Story
Jess needs a fresh start. She’s broke and alone, and she’s just left her job under less than ideal circumstances. Her half brother, Ben, didn’t sound thrilled when she asked if she could crash with him for a bit, but he didn’t say no, and surely everything will look better from Paris. Only when she shows up—to find a very nice apartment, could Ben really have afforded this?—he’s not there. The longer Ben stays missing, the more Jess starts to dig into her brother’s situation, and the more questions she has.

Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results. But like science, life is unpredictable.

Story
Life is hard enough for a teenage girl in 1950s suburbia without having a mother who may—or may not—be a witch. A single mother at that. Sure, she fits in with her starched dresses, string of pearls, and floral aprons. Then there are the hushed and mystical consultations with neighborhood women in distress. The unsavory, mysterious plants in the flower beds. The divined warning to steer clear of a boyfriend whose fate is certainly doomed.

One of the most cringey narration performances I’ve ever heard
It was hard to focus on the actual story because of the stereotyping the narrator performed… as well as just terrible voices, in general. I love Bryn Greenwood and I’m sure it all meant something. But I felt lost in the story, incredibly annoyed by the narration and just eager to be done with the book.

Mediocre at Best
Bryn Greenwood is one of my favorite authors. 'All the ugly and wonderful things' and 'The Reckless oath we made' are 2 of my all time favorite books. In contrast this book is not memorable at all. It feels called in. Upon further investigation I think the reason for this is because this book predates the other two mentioned above. they didn't record the audio book until 2022 but the book was written in 2014 so maybe the author had not refined her writing style or storytelling yet. either way, save your credits for something else.
