Story
Terrence Mack was born poor, grew up tough, and died hard. Waking up in a sea cave with nothing but the clothes on his back and a new bullet scar was enough to convince him that wherever his death had brought him, it wasn't paradise. His new world quickly proves to be a place of danger, magic, monsters, and - for Terry at least - women. Known on Celestine as a template, Terry's genes are key to the survival of the eldritch races. But the fiercely competitive eldritch don't typically leave their lovers alive long, and aren't accustomed to taking 'no' for an answer.

Survive the arena. Choose a Battle Bride. Master the lost art of cultivation. They called me a savage, then threw me into the their cruel arena. Instead of bleeding out on the sand like they hoped, I used the power of my gifted core to rise. When I learned my enemies held a cure for the spreading plight of infertility, I knew why my gods had sent me. I am Dagon Haldorson, hunter and hearthman of the northern shores of Enea. I will grow in strength, form alliances, and win the hearts of gorgeous battle brides.

Story
When fate brought me to the fantasy world of Aurilon, I thought I'd seen everything. If I only knew how wrong I was. Now, I’ve discovered monsters are real, they’re stunningly beautiful, and they need my help. In this world, men’s cores are cursed, preventing them from cultivating and achieving incredible power. Fortunately, I’m not from this world. With several amazing monster girls at my side, I'll forge a new destiny and ascend to heights I’d only ever dreamed of. But first, I must create a safe haven in the wilds to protect those who have been hunted for far too long.

Story
Warner spent his days like almost anyone else. He got up, went to work, answered phone calls in a call center, went home, spent time with his daughter, and went to sleep. Only to repeat the pattern over and over and over. Life was as mundane as anyone could ever fear it to be. Today was the day that all that would change. On this day, his daughter Maya would be nearly fatally injured, plunging Warner into a world of paranormal creatures, monsters, and magic he’d never known existed. The only consolation is that he discovers he’s not quite human, either.

Steve doesn’t know who he is. Or who he was. He doesn’t know anything, actually. Not even where he is. Other than a vast open field of dirt. All Steve knows is that he’s apparently supposed to build a farm. At least that’s his only workable assumption. Given the number of farm-tools left to him. That and the massive number of sacks full of seeds. Unfortunately, this isn’t even the strangest part of this new life. Hidden inside the farm tools, Steve finds messages. Messages that appear in floating windows in front of him.

Story
An existence spent being forced to kill others to satiate a monster. Where the only thing to look forward to was the blessed, if brief, period of time between paying that bribe. Except that very same monster is and isn’t Rene. It just happened to live inside his own mind and force him to do what it wanted - rather than him being an actual monster. That was Rene’s entire life until a fateful day changed that. A day that his career as a hitman for hire built on the monster’s needs will end. Where Rene will be forced to atone for his actions. To be held accountable and judged.

With Boromour now safe from the Horde, Alex needs to figure out his next step. Does he go after the mages’ society, or grow his own fellowship? A chance meeting in the city of Proper might be the way to accomplish both of those options at once. Sara, the wild catgirl, is proving to be quite a handful for Alex. But, she ends up becoming a spearhead for what is now happening on Boromour. God has changed the rules on that planet, and to say that people are going nuts over it is an understatement.

Publisher's Summary
All it takes is a single brush with the supernatural to change a life forever.
Some choose the path of magic and shadow willingly. Others never see the hand of magic as it shapes their fortunes. They face the extraordinary with nothing but courage and wits to guide them.
Some mortals become trapped in the conflict between angels and demons and find themselves forever changed. For all too many, the shadows lead only to untimely ends. For some, however, the shadows offer seductive experiences that draw the newcomers further in....
Life in Shadows collects four stories set in the world of Good Intentions, where one encounter with sorcerers, demons, or a foul-mouthed servant of heaven is all it takes to turn the world upside down.
Warning: Life in Shadows contains explicit violence, extended explicit sex scenes, explicit karaoke, profanity, rampant nudity, assault, murder, breaking and entering, belligerent urban wildlife, premeditated sexual promiscuity, vehicular assault, reckless endangerment, attempted kidnapping, attempted robbery, attempted ritual demonic possession, blatant violation of state regulations of adult entertainment, punching, kicking, cutting, stabbing, shooting, hair pulling, name calling, slut shaming, cheap Halloween costumes, strippers, hipsters, poseurs, police, personal calls while on duty, arson, destruction of private property, lingerie, war criminals, break-up text messaging, lesbian demon seduction, accusations of Mary Suedom, poor workplace morale, premarital sex, nude calisthenics, immolation, false identification, ruthless exploitation of personal beauty, unsafe crowd control standards, vertigo, destruction of evidence, elitism, racism (don't worry, he dies), open relationships, workplace scapegoating, adult use of plumbing implements, fantasy depictions of witchcraft and paganism, at least one reincarnated ancient European warlord, and a girl-on-girl grenade fight. All characters are over the age of 18 except the aforementioned reincarnation of an ancient European warlord. That gets sketchy.

Pick Up a Paperback
Would you try another book from Elliott Kay and/or Tess Irondale?
Most definitely.
What was most disappointing about Elliott Kay’s story?
Not sure what this story line added to the original
What does Tess Irondale bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
She's not just reading, it feels almost like old timie radio shows where there is voice acting involved.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Life in Shadows?
This whole book feels like scenes edited out of the other books.
Any additional comments?
Pick it up on sale in paper back, it's not awful, just not worth the cost/credit to get it in audio form, unless you just have to have more Tess in your life. She does a wonderful job narrating.

Wish it could have been longer.
I tend to read books without reading to much about them first, so this time I was a little confused. I thought this book was going to be about the two witches and the book of shadows, and honesty I was looking forward to it. So I was somewhat disappointed when the story seemed to jump around to other characters and never went back to their story. It was good for me, not great like the other books in the series.

Great Expanded Universe
What made the experience of listening to Life in Shadows the most enjoyable?
Tess Irondale, her performance was great as always
Who was your favorite character and why?
I enjoyed all of the primary characters they each have something special
What about Tess Irondale’s performance did you like?
Everything, her range is great and she is able to give each character their own voice
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes and no, because it is a selection of short stories it is easy to put down at the end of each chapter.
Any additional comments?
one minor issue Tess Irondale seems to have switched voices for Molly and Onyx. In the previous books Onyx had the more soothing seductive voice and Molly had a bit rougher voices in this book they seem to have switched. With that minor thing said it was a great addition to the universe I hope Mr. Kay will write additional books for these characters in the future.

Love it
Another great performance by Tess Irondale. She really knows how to bring a story to life. This is a nice little interlude for the characters from good intentions and I hope to see more of the new characters in the next book. I really enjoyed the parts with Kevin an Shannon. I hope Kevin finds out about everything that's going on around him.
Highly recommend this audio/book to anyone who has read the good intentions series.

another great book.
another great book as expected. But Tess switching Molly's and Onyx's voices kinda ruined the two characters for me, The voices don't match their original personalities. but other than that, another great job from Tess.
