Publisher's Summary

The second book in the DI Eva Harris series, this is a gripping, multi-layered thriller that will keep listeners on the edge of their seats.

In an abandoned warehouse, a schoolboy makes a grisly discovery: 96 containers, each filled with exquisitely preserved bodily remains.

Detective Eva Harris knows the line between life and death better than most. Having survived a near fatal encounter with the criminal underworld once before, she is still haunted by the repercussions of her actions - and fearful of the whole truth emerging.

Faced with the crime scene, she is forced to contemplate a difficult question: is this the work of a lone psychopath - or is there a more complicated truth hidden in this killer’s art?

Her search for the killer takes her across Europe, from the upper echelons of society’s glittering elite to the dark and tangled web of the underworld - and finally, to the very limits of humanity.

Best Thriller I've Ever Heard

Rare for me to give 5 stars to a thriller but for the genre it's well deserved. Still can't believe Carl Goodman's books were free from Audible. I'd have gladly paid. This book is the follow-up to his book 20/20 and I encourage you to read them in order. I hope these books were offered to sway people to buy an upcoming book. If there's one coming out I'll be first in line. Great characters, plenty of action in a compelling story and the perfect amount of interesting information and facts that prove the author does his research. I feared something that happened towards the end was going to ruin it for me but Mr Goodman is clearly an animal lover. Louise Brealey is the perfect reader for both books.

Waiting for book 3

I’ve read both books using Audible. The performance is great, the writing is so good I lack words. The character is engaging, the story lines are detailed and complex, and the entire package leaves the reader wanting more. With science and humanism and hedonism and morality and justice examined in detail, this book gives pure pleasure in the read/listen. Brealey not only does Goodmans work Justice, she becomes another character in the story by pulling the reader in, and orchestrating deeper emotional responses. Thanks to you both!

Nice!

Quite thrilling, and I just love the main character! She badass and clever, and has her heart on the right spot. One minus point for the very long finalé. The narration was amazing, I can’t believe this book is for free.

The First Book Was Amazing

I was totally swept away with Goodman’s first book in this series (20/20), which was clever and interesting and chock-full of compelling allusions. This book, while it *does* continue with a kick-ass protagonist, backs away from some of the tropes that helped the first book seem so irresistibly suspenseful. He cut out some of Eva’s personal constraints and conflicts, which made her more of a standard genre character here than novel.

While interesting, this Turkey needed a bit more time to roast. I will definitely read more by this author in the future though. He’s a brilliant writer.

I enjoyed very much

Seemed scattered at 1st but in the end brought well together.
Detailed narrative lent texture, taste and emotion to the work, and times almost too much but in the end a throughly enjoyable creation.
Thank you for creating this.

Love this series!

This is book 2, and 20/20 should be read 1st. Now I’d like books 3-6 to binge listen!

Great books. “Multilayered” doesn’t begin to describe it. There are so many threads here, and they’re handled so deftly, that it’s just a wild ride.

It’s also thought provoking, and interesting at a deep level. Science, philosophy, futurism, crime, and punishment, all come under scrutiny.

Intriguing, interesting, and wildly entertaining. I hope this series continues.

What a story, suspense plenty and you never quite knew what was around the next corner. Enjoyed the ending. The characters were good and the narration very good.

Not as good as Book 1

I would have enjoyed this more if I hadn't read book 1. There was too much rehashing of the characters and storyline from One to get a new reader caught up. The story was interesting though but I don't think I will read any more in this series.

Gratuitous violence, misogyny, creepiness

I don’t recommend this as it has little redeeming value. Lots of violence torture and misogyny

Enjoyed the half I listened to

I started listening to this book after it came up as part of my “included in membership” listens. I was enjoying it and was half way through when I was suddenly locked out and would have had to pay to listen to the second half.

This was literally from one day to the next, I took no break in listening. I listened to half of it on headphones while stripping out a bathroom and tried to listen again the next day but couldn’t.

Audible should warn you when they’re going to suddenly disallow you to continue. I wouldn’t have started it if I’d known if not be able to finish. So incredibly dishonest of them!!

Far better than negative reviews suggested

I was hooked just listening to the sample and was not disappointed. Personally, I prefer books read straight instead of a narrator attempting to 'act' different accents and characters voices and I particularly liked Louise Brealey's style. Haven't read 20/20 yet but I certainly will now and hope the series continues. Wish I could message RDC because I had a similar problem; the book became UNAVAILABLE when I tried to continue listening on the second day. However, I contacted Audible Help Desk and they showed me how to 'reboot' the app which restored it, thank goodness.

Not good

The narrative is so flat and monotone, holds no emotion , I can’t listen to it anymore, I gave it a good try but thumbs down for this one.

I really tried to listen to this but gave up after 4 hours, it was tedious, not enough suspense or mystery for me, the narrator was ok a little flat toned at times. If you like long explanations about technical jargon etc. (I have enough of that IRL) then this book should appeal. The writing was very good it just did not grip me at all.

Outstanding

This is the sequel to 20/20 which I very much enjoyed, this book may actually surpass it's predecessor for ingenuity but I'd have to revisit 20/20 to be certain of that.

Its not for the faint hearted, so avoid if you don't care for violent fiction, but grab it now if you enjoy high tension crime thrillers.

I have to add that I love Louise Brealey's narration, she is clearly not to everyones taste judging by some of the reviews, but a quick listen to the sample should fix that issue, if you don't like what you hear, don't buy.

Good plot

Good plot but I struggled with the narrator. I understood the strong main character but this seemed to come across as almost bored at times.

Overall good

I enjoyed this one more than 20/20 although I'm not very interested in the continued plot I did enjoy the main plot of this case. Especially some more of the outlandish parts!

The narrator is fine, I think she suits the main character and I love her voice for Judy.

My main issue is with some of the writing. The author has a need to explain everything, even down to some really obvious things which seem entirely unnecessary. I found some of the explanations come across as condescending like the author believes all his readers are never going to be as clever as they are.

I would read another in the series but only for free, these are not something I would make an effort to look for or to pay for

Not my cup of tea!

Firstly the Narrator didn't seem to give the story any life.
The book itself seemed overly complicated for such a boring tale.
I made it to Chapter 7 before deciding I'm not going to get the wasted time back this lifetime.
However the book would serve you well if you suffered with insomnia.

narrator voice too monotone

story seemed good but I just couldnt listen to the narrator's voice unlike other books I have listened to this sounded like she was reading instructions rather than a gripping thriller. After 2 hours I could take no more!

Okay

There were too many characters and I got lost trying to remember who was who. I didn't get the ending either.

Another compelling story by the author

Another great and compelling story from this author. The narrator is the same again although did seem to read the book it a slightly less staccato fashion so only had to speed her up to 1.1x this book!!
The storyline is good and interesting.
Def worth a listen but don’t forget to speed it up a bit for your sanity.

narrator a bit better than in the first Eva Harris book, her reading flowed a bit better, but still some odd punctuation breaks in the narration. overall the book was enjoyable although the last few finale chapters dragged a bit for me.

Ok

This was an om story. Enjoyed 20/20 better. thought it a little far fetched in places but guess in today society it could happen. Narration was alright.
