Story
At seventeen, I ran. I joined the military and planned to never step foot in my home town again. Nothing could make me return to that hellhole and the pain I buried there, or so I thought—until I found myself on a plane to that very place. Almost two decades later, I’m forced home to help find a missing nine-year-old. As a member of the most elite K9 special unit in the country, it was my job, and you can’t exactly say no to the FBI. It should be easy, and I won’t have to face what I ran from. However, the case is anything but simple.

When it comes to hockey, I'm all about the game. I've worked for years to be one of the best in the league, and l've done it without splashing my orientation all over the tabloids. My hockey image is one I've carefully cultivated, and after one night with Ezra Palaszczuk, I risk it all. He's cocky, obnoxious, and has an ego bigger than Massachusetts. And okay, maybe he's the sexiest man I've ever known. We'll never get along. Not when we sleep together. Not even when my possessive streak awakens. That doesn't stop us from falling into bed together over and over again.

Magnus Carlsen is determined to grow old disgracefully. At 52, he doesn’t believe in keeping anything. Men, sofas, books—everything gets jettisoned, eventually. He’s divided his life into happy compartments. A successful trial lawyer, he spends his days lecturing jurors, exasperating judges, and striding arrogantly around courtrooms. He fills his nights with a parade of handsome young men who want to make him happy. Why date someone his own age to discuss back pain, retirement planning, and corns when he can date men who don’t care to discuss anything at all?

Austin Romero: No one's fast enough to outrun grief. Trust me, I've tried. I ran away from the city and took a job as the lead detective back in my old home town of Blue Creek, New Hampshire. I expected to bump into past ghosts, but I never expected those ghosts to reopen old wounds. The biggest ghost of them all: Charlie Marsh. He was the man who had stolen my heart when we were teens, and who now couldn't even remember a single day we had spent together. Which makes it exceptionally awkward when he becomes my first client.

Publisher's Summary
"He was like if water caught fire—a beautiful anomaly. It was gorgeous. Danny wanted to exist inside that explosion and let himself be consumed by it."
There are certain kinds of people who were meant to become rich, but Danny Zhou isn’t one of them. He’s a simple man with simple tastes. In life, he’s only ever wanted a few things:
A house.
Maybe a dog.
He wouldn’t say no to a white picket fence.
And a gorgeous husband wouldn’t hurt.
But the sudden explosion of his delivery app changed his life, and not for the good.
Returning home with a shattered heart and a full bank account, Danny starts the search for a life with substance, and takes up his old post as a volunteer firefighter. He’s not sure what to expect, but it’s most definitely not Jamie Kane, the gorgeous, Deaf firefighter with a chip on his shoulder the size of Texas, and seems to hate the very sight of him.
Danny knows he shouldn’t look at that man and see a future there. Men like Jamie are not men for happily ever afters. But something in his dark eyes says to keep trying. Something in his strong, careful hands says Jamie is definitely worth the fire, even if Danny gets burned.
Like Water Catching Fire is a second-edition rerelease of a book published in 2018 with small but significant changes. It's a slow-burn, stand-alone firefighter romance featuring a stoic, Deaf Polynesian man who isn’t thrilled about living on the mainland, and a shy Chinese American tech nerd whose viral delivery app changed everything for the worse…and then maybe for the better.

So intense!
In true E.M. fashion, an emotionally intense story of an admirable disabled individual who finds love when least expected with an understanding and nonjudgmental person. This is what made me fall in love with their stories from the beginning, and a first audio experience from them hooked me even more.
The narrator of this story was absolutely perfect! Their ability of various voices for numerous characters was impeccably handled, adding to the excitement of the characters. Jamie and Danny’s families brought a great amount of depth to such an intense story. Ten stars for a passionate storyline with a beautiful connection and a pleasurable happy ever after!

Touching
Wow, what a touching story. One that not only makes you warm and fuzzy, but also reminds you of the importance of representation and that ALL people are beautiful and worthy. And it’s not just that the characters are Chinese, or Polynesian, or Deaf, it’s that their stories and experiences are beautiful and impactful.
I loved these two together, their quiet understanding of one another, and the space they provide to each other to be themselves was kind and comforting. And I loved that the happy ending, was yes, happy, but it didn’t try to solve the world's problems, the world is still complicated and messy, but these two have found their home in amongst it.
Not only is this a beautiful story, but Michael Dean is a wonderful narrator. He does a fantastic job at capturing the characters and the tone of the story.

Danny and Jamie are Perfection
I love, love, love this story. Danny and Jamie’s connection is so real, so powerful, and strong. I love how they meet and how Jamie first doubts Danny’s sincerity. I love when he finally realizes that he is who he says he is. Michael Dean’s narration was spot on too. He brought this story to life and I was engrossed even though if already read this story. Entertaining and well-read - by Shana W
The narrator, Michael Dean, has a voice that is wonderful to listen to and he reads the story with good expression and at the perfect pace. E.M Lindsey often writes about characters that are a little (or a lot) different from the everyday ones in books, displaying great sensitivity to the challenges they face; in this case, one of the main characters signs, an aspect of the plot that I enjoyed very much. Danny and Jamie are so sweet together, it's hard not to love their story. EM. Lindsey is fast becoming one of my favourite authors.

Lovely listen
This author does an absolute stellar job with characters that have different abilities. In this audio, one character is Deaf and is voice off. The authors interpretation of the Deaf culture is spot in and I love that they use that in the storyline. They characters use humor and are so personable and I love them. Even the characters that are not nice are done very well.

didn't want to stop listening
this is the first book I've listened to narrated by Michael Dean. It took me about a chapter to get used to him, but once I did, I was completely sucked into the story, and now I can't imagine Danny sounding any other way. The story is phenomenal. lower heat, but that's okay. it suited these characters.

Emotional and awesome
Story: A really good story of a guy finding his footing in life after a drastic change. I really liked Danny from the get go and the narration from his point of view was really well written. And then there is Jamie, who is a perfect match he didn't know he needed! Loved the chemistry they both had and the almost effortless development of the relationship. From the first kiss it felt to me as if it was just meant to be.
The angst in the book is not very intense, but gives it a lot of depth and I like that E.M. Lindsey does not sugarcoat issues they input into the story. It's a genuine, believable and emotional romance that I thoroughly enjoyed.
Narration: Good, easy to follow narration. Very good performance just at the level I would expect from Michael Dean.

Powerful and so well done
Every time I read or listen to an EM Lindsey book I know I few things: I am going to be captivated by the story, I am going to learn something and I am going to come out having grown as a person. Seriously, the lessons learned are real life. In this case we meet Danny and Jamie - Jamie is a deaf firefighter who has struggled with acceptance his entire life. Acceptance by his family and now by his team. Danny is the first person to see Jamie for more than his deafness and it’s beautiful. Amazingly performed by Michael Dean, he brought the depth of emotion needed for this powerful story. Loved it!

Wonderfully sweet and emotional
There's nothing I enjoy more than sitting back and listening to an E.M. Lindsey romance, and Michael Dean did a fantastic job of narrating Danny and Jamie's story.
Though this audio started off very much about Danny and his personal journey, by the time I reached the end I felt equally invested in the resolution of Jamie's storyline. These men were so different from each other, and yet linked by their shared experience of feeling like an outsider in their community. For Danny, coming back to his home town was a means of escaping from his New York lifestyle and trying to find himself again. I don't think he ever anticipated how meeting Jamie would change his life, but that's exactly what happened when they locked eyes in the fire station. It broke my heart a little to see how little faith Jamie had that Danny could be different from the other guys on the team, but after a particularly awful call broke down their communication barrier, I saw an entirely different side of him. Once Jamie let himself open up to Danny, their relationship blossomed into a wonderfully sweet romance. I loved listening to every minute of their low-key dates and casual conversations, and it made me excited to see how deep their feelings grew. While I wouldn't say their story was angst-free, most of the tension was external to Danny and Jamie's relationship. These two had to deal with disapproving friends, confrontations with exes, and stressful family interactions, but never once did they fight with each other or walk away. Their conflicts didn't get perfectly resolved, because life is never that simple, but the way they stood together throughout it all reinforced how deep their feelings were for each other. While I know the future has a lot more in store for Danny and Jamie, I'm perfectly content to walk away knowing that Jamie is in a better place with his family than he has been for years, that Danny found a new passion to make him excited to go to work every day, and that their relationship is only going to grow stronger over time.
**I voluntarily listened to a free copy of this book. This review expresses my honest thoughts and opinions.
